So, who wants to see if the BEA can collectively predict the Oscars?

Sorry about the multiple posts, but I couldn't figure out how to get the Forum software to let me put everything in one post.

Wow, ok...so I haven't voted in any of the polls, but judging by the results of the first one no one's really voting realistically. Sure, Depp won the SAG (which was fantastic) and he was really good--I just saw Pirates for the first time about an hour ago, actually...but anyone who really follows the Oscars knows he has about a snowflake's chance of winning. I'm playing in an Oscar pool here in town, and the choices I made weren't my favorites in every case, aren't always the ones I HOPE will win, but the ones I would (or, in this case, have) put my money on.
- Best Picture: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
- Best Actor: Sean Penn, Mystic River
- Best Actress: Charlize Theron, Monster
- Best Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins, Mystic River...see the movie--this man's earned it.
- Best Supporting Actress: Shoregh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog--popular vote's bootylicious Renee Zellweger, but I think this lady's coming around on the outside.
- Best Director: Clint Eastwood, Mystic River...and he TOTALLY deserves it.
- Best Original Screenplay: Lost in Translation.....though personally I'd really like to see Finding Nemo win
- Best Adapted Screenplay: Mystic River
- Best Animated Film: Finding Nemo...of COURSE.
The pool also does votes on every other category, and a fun on the In Memoriam tribute that's hard to explain...but I won't go into those.

Did you close each poll? Code:

should appear after each poll.

I don't follow the awards, but did American Splendor win anything? I just saw it and thought it was pretty good.

LOTR: ROTK won everything it was nominated for. Probably a way to acknowledge the entire LOTR project. Imagine - a real movie trilogy! Not just adding on sequels.
So that's 11 Oscars for ROTK, which ties it with Ben-Hur and Titanic.
(One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong....)

And the answer to Rtpoe's musical question, of course, is Titanic!
One giant sticky-sweet bodice-ripping romance novel of a movie, which had no business getting best picture!

Figures, doesn't it, that John Doe from Se7en and, far more to the point, Keyser Soze from The Usual Suspects gets to say "Rolo Tomasi" to Captain Smith as he dies? You could have a Kevin Spacey Master Criminals Film Festival ...

I didn't know that. I've never seen Suspects and because my friend gave away the ending to me like four years ago and I've been to pissed off to bother. I decided I might as well go ahead though and it's in my NetFlix queue, somewhere way down. Still pissed about that though.

Bumping rather than starting a new thread....
The nominees have been announced.
Does anyone care? 2011 was a rather average year for movies...

I spend time in December either going to movies or not. As studios make movies throughout the year, I think there is some gnome who asks himself whether the movie is good enough to get nominated or not. If it's good enough to get nominated *Cough* Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy*Cough*, it get held until December.

I still don't understand why Charlize Theron wasn't nominated for one of the best and most unique performances.

She's already got one, you see....
The Academy looks at a lot of things, not necessarily just the performance in question. Which partly explains why Paul Newman didn't win real acting Oscar until after he was given a special lifetime achievement award.
And why I'm thinking Max von Sydow will get the Best Supporting Actor award this year. He's been making movies since before two of the other nominees were even born (heck, probably even before Jonah Hill's *parents* were born!), and given his age he might not get another chance to take home the gold statuette.

Michael Moore is trying to change the nomination process, at least for documentaries; I gather different categories have different selection methods. At least for documentaries they are nominated by giving five documentaries to seven members and having them rated on a five-point scale. The problem is that one, one-point vote takes a documentary out of consideration.
This year, for example, Werner Herzog's "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" didn't get nominated.
