I've also had luck with Paint Shop Pro's Animation Shop.  I bow to the majesty of Shara and all the other PhotoShop users, but I'm just not that skilled, so I prefer the simpler tools.

Photoshop sounds like a good one to use but I've been quite pleased with Ulead GIF Animator although I just use it occasionally. I use version 5.05. That was released about a year ago so there should be newer revisions available. It's a 15-day free trial then $49.95 after that. You can load avi's, mpeg's, and quicktime movies and turn them into animated gif's. I found it easy to get started and figure out. I've attached a screenshot of the program. Also below is notes I wrote for myself when using it:

Ulead GIF Animator 5 tips:

1. Don't use the animator wizard.
2. Open an avi or mpeg file. The shorter, the better since big files will take a long time to load. The length of the file should be about the length of the animated gif if possible.
3. Highlight all of the frames at the bottom (ctrl), go into properties and change the delay to .04 sec.
4. Go into the Optimize tab and change the Preset from Photo 256 to Photo 64 or less.
5. Go into edit and resize image to what you want, like 120 x ? Use best quality.
6. To further reduce the file size, you can delete every other frame at the bottom.

I find Jasc Animation Shop works great for my level of computer skills (and time).  Let's you look at the end product on the fly...  Very  easy to use.  I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro for all my morphing as well.  Not as sophisticated as Photoshop but WAY easier.
