Irvin Kershner, the director of what is arguably the best sci-fi sequel of all time (The Empire Strikes Back) died on the same day that Leslie Nielsen did. He was 87.

#10, Chicago Cubs.

The finest third baseman not yet in the Hall of Fame.

The finest third baseman never to appear in a World Series.

One of the nicest people ever to play baseball.

And by the way, he did take self-injected drugs.... He was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of 18... when the only way to treat it was to shoot yourself up with insulin...

The Original Dallas Cowboy, he actually signed with them before the franchise officially joined the NFL. From high school through the pros, he played all his home games within a few hours drive of Dallas.

He didn't win any Super Bowls for Dallas, but he laid the foundations for their becoming "America's Team".

"He had a wonderful sense of humor and a very laid-back personality. But he was an absolutely intense competitor who could rally a team." - Cowboys president and general manager Tex Schramm

He had a second career when he was tapped to be a part of the Monday Night Football team alongside Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell. He was ideal for the team, keeping things light - the perfect foil to Howard.

Turn out the lights, the party's over....

Being a Cowboys fan since 1964, when they were the only pro football team that broadcast into Mexico, I grew up with ol' Dandy Don Meredith and suffered through those years when the Cowboys were tarred as a team that could not win " The big one " . I still remember the heartache of the 1967 NFL championship game between Dallas and Green Bay, AKA the " Ice Bowl ", where it was so cold that Jethrow Pugh, defensive tackle # 75 of Dallas, lost part of his ear due to frostbite. This was also the era where Dallas had it's highest scoring teams in franchise history. I also loved how in Monday Night Football he would play the Texas good ol' boy foil to Howard Cossel's New Yawk knowitall pompous blowhard. Made for great broadcasting. I'll always remember how on a Raiders - Oilers game, the Oilers were getting waxed and so they started to pan the cameras into the Houston Astrodome stadium crowd and a disgusted fan gave the middle finger to the camera. It was too late to edit out but Dandy Don said in that Texas drawl " Well folks, obviously he thinks the Oilers are #1 " and made it into a lighthearted moment  Smiley. Retired in 1969 and I remember how we Cowboys fans were afraid for the future. Craig Morton became #1 but in 1971 he was replaced by a Naval Academy graduate who did win the Big Game twice, Roger " the dodger " Staubach.

Yes; sorry about that. I heard about it from Annie Sprinkle, who is Communications Central for retro porn. I gather that AVN has a long obit, but I don't have a link. Imagine The Hedgehog without the hair. And thinner.

I want to take note of the passing of Elizabeth Edwards. While the obits will list her good works, and she is much more a political figure than a porn figure, I admire her for the way she changed that dreary figure, the long-suffering political wife.

Probably the worst example of the political wife is the woman who is married to Senator Vitter of Louisiana. She lectured Hilliary Clinton on what a submissive hag Hillary must be to put up with Bill's infidelity. Then it turned out that her sweet hubby was not only paying hookers, he's paying them to do the diaper thing. And she stood by her (well-diapered) man!

None of that shit for Liz! Yeah, John is a bazillionaire, but making babies off the ranch is grounds for a public reprimand, and she gave it to him. Given all the phoneys in politics, she was the real article.

EDIT: BTW, didn't John's Daddy ever tell him that there are ways to avoid making babies with strange women?

I was perusing the NY Times slide show of Notable Deaths of 2010 recently. To my dismay, I missed the passing of Leslie Buck back in April.

Who is Leslie Buck, you might ask?

He designed this (you might have to be a New Yorker to really understand):

http://www.navalhistory.org/2010/12/16/rip-chief-bob-feller/

He didn't have to enlist; as the sole provider for his family he had an automatic draft deferment. But there was a war on, and on Dec 9, 1941, he signed up in the Navy.

Feller was first assigned as a physical training instructor. However, his desire to go into combat led him to volunteer for gunners’ school in 1942. Chief Petty Officer Feller was placed in command of a 40mm antiaircraft mount aboard the USS Alabama and served through the campaigns in the North Atlantic and throughout the Pacific theater. He earned five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars.

Assigned to the Third Fleet, the Alabama was in constant action, and (in order) in the battles of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, in the Marianas, in Peleliu, in New Guinea, then back to the Marianas, this time in the battle for Truk. It was also engaged in the capture and occupation of Guam, and the epic struggle for Saipan, in the landings in the Western Caroline Islands and supported the invasion of Okinawa. After the surrender documents were signed, the Alabama led the Fleet into Tokyo Bay.

Remarkably, the Alabama never lost a man in an enemy action. It was known as the "Lucky A."

"Every time I went out to pitch I thought about how lucky I was to serve my country and come back with all my limbs," Feller said. "I did what I thought I should. You'll never hear me cry about it."

Oh, he was a pretty good ballplayer, too....

The NY Times has a very nice slide show (mentioned above) for many of the notables who passed on this year:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/obituaries/20100329_NOTABLEDEATHS.html

They include not only entertainers and sportsmen, but people from the world of fine arts, business, politics (Richard C. Holbrooke), science (Benoit Mandelbrot), and literature (Jose Saramago).

They also have further essays and appreciations here:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/26/magazine/2010lives.html?ref=obituaries

Though some are too recent to have been included:

Jonah "Bud" Greenspan, Olympic filmmaker: "Sometimes the essence of the Olympic Games can be found in people who don’t stand on the victory podium."

Fred Foy, radio announcer: "A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-Yo Silver!' ... The Lone Ranger!"

And there are those that they seem to have forgot:

Harold Gould,  character actor. White hair, big mustache.... First pick for Mr. Cunningham on "Happy Days", he turned out to be unavailable...

Morrie Yohai, inventor of Cheez Doodles

Edward Uhl, inventor of the bazooka

Leonard Skinner, gym teacher and realtor: Born Forby Leonard Skinner, he worked at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. He enforced the rules on hair length far too often for the likes of a couple of students who had a rock band. The band couldn't decide on a name until they settled on that of their nemesis - only they changed all the vowels to "Y" in the hopes that they wouldn't get sued....

Wow, the father of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot, is dead? To those who are not of a mathematical bent, if it weren't for Mandelbrot's development of what became known as "the Mandelbrot set", most if not all 3D animation would look a whole lot less lifelike than it does.

A coincidence for me is I just heard of this man not more than two weeks ago.  I knew the song Baker Street, but had no idea who sang it.  I heard a Waylon Jennings version of the song and had to know more about it.  It has been remade numerous times, but this has to be the best version, no disrespect to the departed.  If it weren't for him, the Jennings remake wouldn't have been possible.  But damn, I love me some Waylon!

I think Gerry version is a tad better, very miniscule, but I like the way Jennings kind of sound like Gordon Lightfoot with Gerry meloncholy bluesy tone. Can't replace the saxophone wailing with a electric guitar. But now they both can play together in heaven.

The song needs to sound gritty, which Gerry didn't do as well as Waylon imho, but a great song non the less.

Standing in the shadows of Ricky....
January 12, 2011 |  4:24 pm
David Nelson, the last of the Ozzie-and-Harriet Nelsons, has died. On the deceptive face of it, David, who passed away Tuesday at age 74, was the least colorful member of the first family of situation comedy: One would say, within the context of the series, that he was his mother's son -- practical, serious, down-to-earth -- as goofy, dreamy, pop star Ricky was his father's. Eventually, he became a director of the series, as Ozzie had been before him, suggesting that he was his father's son in fact, and he later produced the spinoff "Ozzie's Girls," in which the room he had once shared with his brother was rented to a couple of what were then called coeds.
