Hey, thought I might as well ask here since I never get much feedback on other forums. I'm running Ubuntu 10.x (Linux) and have both Firefox and Chrome installed. Until a couple months ago, just about every flash-video site I visited played perfectly fine including Youtube, etc... However, at some point, a few stopped playing (and if you can't get the videos to play, you can't capture them using Firefox plugins of course).

I assumed that some sites updated their Flash code at some point a couple months ago and just waited for Ubuntu to catch up... I always install suggested updates (once or twice a week) and I manually re-installed the flashplayer today using this terminal command: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree ...videos continue to play fine in Youtube and a number of other sites, but oddly, Dailymotion videos still don't play at all... whether I'm logged in there or not, no matter whether I'm using Firefox or Chrome, no matter what settings I tweak on my end (in the browsers) or at Dailymotion (user settings when logged in) all I see on any Dailymotion page is a black box where the video should be w/o any picture or text or anything in it though everything else on the page shows up fine: links, stamps to other vids, etc...

Oddly, if I click on the '</> Embed' button directly beneath the black/blank video window, both Firefox and Chrome WILL display the running (lowrez proxy) video in the Preview window, although it's displayed at only 400 pixels in width... in Firefox, Ant video capture WILL capture the full-rez video from this point. So, I can use this workaround to view/capture Dailymotion vids and then later play them back in full/native rez from my drive, even though they don't play the regular way on the clip pages themselves (which makes me think I have something set wrong somewhere... though I've pored through all the preferences).

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated since so many links here point to Dailymotion. TIA! Smiley

PS: I STILL continue to seek a good flash video capture tool for Chrome. I've installed/tried the few that come up when searching for 'flash/flv download/capture' under Chrome's 'Get more extensions' (some here if you're curious: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search?hl=en-US&q=flv ) but none of those seem to work at all AFAICT. Anyone out there use Chrome to capture streaming videos under ANY OS? I'm just curious...

I know it's blasphemy, but YT and DM both play fine in IE7.

I know it's blasphemy, but YT and DM both play fine in IE7.

IE stopped being supported for Mac many years ago AFAIK and (also AFAIK) has never been supported for Linux. To the best of my knowledge, these Dailymotion videos play fine under Mac OSX, but I've given up Mac for Linux so I'm trying to get them to play normally (without using the embed preview workaround to then capture with Ant Video Downloader to be able to playback/view the video in full rez).

There are some other browsers for Ubuntu Linux but Firefox is by far the most widely used (and has the most plug-in/extension support) though I like Chrome better (despite it's complete lack of usable Flash/FLV capture tools). I'm open to suggestions for ANY methods that will aid the viewing/capture of streaming content on my system. Smiley I've tried quite a few of those third-party sites where you enter the URL to the video page and then the third-party site provides a download link, but aside from easy/common sources like Youtube, the ones I've tried often don't work.

PS: I didn't mention it earlier as it's not a priority, but around the same time that Dailymotion vids stopped playing normally, I also started having trouble displaying/playing PinupFiles video samples in both browsers. Around that time, I believe DJPFC mentioned that his site had upgraded their flash player. Presently, I CAN stream/play/see those sample clips at Pinupfiles, but none of the capture tools (Ant, Download Helper, etc...) within Firefox seem to know the sample video is playing, thus the clips can't be saved. The sample vids are so brief that I'm not compelled to save them so it's not a big deal... I just mention it as a potential clue.

True be told, I've always had problems with the Dailymotion website in getting their videos to play despite whatever version of the Flashplayer I have installed.

I usually have to fart around with them in some manner, like reloading the page several times, or even doing a full restart of the Firefox browser before they will play in the browser.

Under Firefox and Windows Vista, I use the Video DownloadHelper extension. And often times I have to reload the page in order to download a complete version of a Dailymotion video, especially if the video is longer than about 15 minutes or so. It's fucking annoying. I never use Chrome for my streaming video downloading needs, since FF works so well.

As mentioned, going to the 'embed' page for a Dailymotion video puts up a small version in a player window which will both play and is downloadable (captureable). Also of note is that this workaround allows you to avoid having to log in (for mature content) or having to manually set the 'family filter' to off... neither of which would be a big deal except for the fact that Dailymotion cookies have almost always seemed crappy to me in that they never remember my preferences. So, the workaround lets you avoid 3 Dailymotion glitches total, FWIW.

possibly you need to redownload your video codecs. After asking around there is a codec pack called the windows 7 codec pack. Do not let the name fool you, it works on any pc. Formerly known as CCCP codec pack. if all else fails... try this Smiley

Yeah, I'm thinking maybe it's a codec thing. But then again, I really havent had a problem with Dailymotion, except that one time I didnt update Flash for lie 4 months.....then i had a BIG problem. I will say that I don't run Ubuntu, I run Win7.

I don't spend much time/effort messing with codecs... leaving it to Ubuntu updates to include whatever might be needed (i.e.: I should be running the exact same set of default codecs that all other Ubuntu users are using). In the case of Dailymotion, I really don't think it's a codec issue anyway, because the preview video on the 'embed' page for each clip does play (the 'workaround' I described below) even though the clip window on the 'main' page stays black. I'm not really sure what the problem is... something odd in the way Dailymotion is using Flash maybe.

As mentioned, there are a few other sites with similar behavior: the video window is black. It's not many... just a few. A couple other places the video seems to play fine (Pinups sample clips for example) but the capture plugins I've got installed (in Firefox) don't seem to 'see' the video playing, thus they can't be saved. Also not a big deal.

The vast majority of things play fine and can be saved if desired. Not being able to play every last clip I might encounter is a modest price that I'm willing to pay (along with a smaller selection of apps) in order to use Linux, in exchange for the benefits it provides.

As always, I appreciate everyone's feedback! Smiley

I get this message when I try to play a DM vid:

"This page asks to use a plugin that can only run in 32-bit mode."

Then there is a button which says:

"Restart in 32-bit mode."

If I restart though, it still doesn't work.

Well, the 'embed' player workaround I mentioned earlier is not an option now... Dailymotion, not content with how inconsistent their site is, decided to either remove or change the embed option... there's no longer the familiar 3rd button right below the player.

Added later: I found where they moved it... instead of the word 'Embed' on a button right beneath the video, in their infinite wisdom Dailymotion decided it'd be better to do away with the word completely, replacing it with a couple of tiny light grey brackets and moving that to the lower right-hand corner, a couple inches south of the video itself. If you click on that obscure link, you'll go to the Embed page, where the 'preview' video will play properly.  Angry

LOL! I was just looking for the embed button last night XD Glad to know where it is now, lololol.

Really?? Maybe it has something to deal with the browser you are using? (Like maybe you are using a 32-bit on a 64-bit OS, or somethnig is not connection on a 64-bit program on your 64-bit OS or maybe they just hate the 64-bit systems now)

I've not gotten that problem and i've been using 64-bit browsers (I think) on Win7 here (a 64-bit OS)......but maybe that's what those temp black screens are when I leave too many tabs open and running on DM XD
