my dad has a 1st gen iPod shuffle that we got him for xmas a few years back.  when I got it I used iTunes to put stuff on it but since upgrading to a new PC and getting rid of XP I have not put iTunes software back on my PC.  is there a way to just put songs on the iPod without using iTunes?  I do not plan on buying any songs from it all his songs are ones I have ripped from his various CDs that he owns.

Dunno about avoiding iTunes altogether, but iTunes should be able to rip CDs and place the song files onto the iPod.  (I've never had issues with it).  iTunes can also import files in other formats (at least mp3s).  So you don't need to buy songs via iTunes in order to add them to your device.  You can use your own CDs. (At least that's what I've done with my 3rd Gen. iPod).
