Title: Pulse Returns
Post by: Lightfoot on September 02, 2010, 01:41:17 AM
At least to some degree.  If you didn't know, I'm starting over the series and attempting something a little more moderated.  It'll still update on Thursdays but it's black and white.

http://pulse.comicdish.com/ (http://pulse.comicdish.com/)

It'll also be posted on my DA page for at least the first year or so.  I'm trying to point the pages at webcomiclist and onlinecomics.net to the new page, but they've gotten so slow over the years.  It takes ages for each page to load.

I took down the SOA site just a few minutes ago.  I couldn't completely delete the forum, and ended up sort of breaking it accidently.  It now says "forbidden" when trying to visit the forum directory (not what I planned exactly).

I am posting about this first update here, but unlike the old comics, I doubt it's appropriate to post about every update here.  I will post about this here again at the point where Annie grows physically in the comic (it happens all at once, but it's a fair way into the comic from here).

It's finally to the point where Annie grows, after 28 pages.

Unlike my original plan, I have warn you that there isn't a scene showing the process of her growth.  It happens while she's asleep.  I sort of went with the surprise method, although I'm not sure there's anyone reading it that didn't already read the original.

This is a cool comic. I assume there is a purpose to her "changes"? ;)

And will we ever figure out why "IT" came?

Thanks for your readership.

I don't know if there is a purpose for her changes, but I intend to have a explanation eventually about why she changed.  I did have a reason in mind, but I'm reconsidering due to some recent comments.  ...Some of the options would sort of give a purpose I guess.  Maybe even just that her body didn't have enough mass to contain the new charge, so it grew, and out was easier than up.  Tabitha is much larger overall, so it wasn't a problem for her.

I believe I've decided on the backstory for "IT", but it'll take a while, possibly even something that'll wait until I'm nearing the end.  It at least requires seeing the previous event from the point of view from both Charlotte and The Silver Dragon.

I thought I spellchecked, but I guess I was wrong.  I also have to edit Tabitha's neck in the second panel of page 22, there aren't lines across the neck of her suit.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you like the comic so far.  12 years (and having made the comic once) probably makes a difference.  With the original I always felt I was having to explain away or smooth out mistakes from early in the story.

Welcome!  At least there's almost 60 pages you can read without waiting for updates.  Maybe I haven't promoted it enough?

Yeah, I put up an ad box about 11 months ago and recently decided to start using the $17.50 earned to promote the comic.  Maybe because of the few months lapse between this and the end of the SOA, I figure there are either a lot of old readers who either don't want to read the new Pulse, or don't know about it.  This new comic is still way below half of the SOA readership.

Well, I'm glad you are interested.  Just added a new page a few minutes ago.

...I'll reconsider mentioning it in the comics & cartoons thread in the general area, and maybe at the Process forums.  I guess I've been too quiet about it.
Title: Re: Pulse Returns
Post by: Lightfoot on January 11, 2012, 08:05:32 PM
I've been reconsidering if I should post about comic updates here.  There are still a trickle of visitors coming from this and other of my posts on the forum.  I always knew that a lot of traffic came from my mentioning updates here, but I thought many would just visit automatically if I stopped, but that might not have been true.  Also I might have switched sites without enough notice, and I seem to hear from people every once in a while who are surprised that I continued making comics.  Traffic is way down compared to the (low traffic itself) old site even considering the change in content, so I thought I'd do some of the things that helped in the past.

I stopped posting about updates because while I thought that the new comic would be considered a big-bust comic, that it might not have enough BE to be considered a BE comic.  If only items that include BE at that moment should be mentioned here, that I had potentially abused that policy often in the past.  Either with updates that included only pictures, or updates of comics that never included BE.  And that there were no other comic authors posting about updates to their comics.

I doubt I'll get approval (but you never know), but I guess I'm mentioning this for a chance for objections.  Assuming I do post about a update each week, I'm not certain if just adding to this thread would be better, or a new thread for each update.  Other forums where I once posted about updates wanted it all into one thread, previously here it was requested that each update be a different thread.

I check in on your DA gallery quite often, so for me update announcements here aren't really necessary. Nonetheless, I think just adding to this thread is the way to go.

well in the preview picture, she has about the length of her head of cleavage sticking out, thing is, it looks pushed up. if it isn't you're looking at about 8 inches of bust, putting her at a 42" bust or H-cups

The shot is sort of looking up at her from slightly below, like a worms-eye view maybe.  But if her bust is being pushed up is probably open to interpretation.  Her breasts are about 3/4ths the size of her head (and because it's not a common size for me there is probably more variation than normal).  But I wanted to make her small enough that I could move her up to head-sized without going into another range if I ever wanted her to grow a little more.  And also she has kind of a unique size compared to other characters I've drawn which is kind of nice.

An opinion (so detailed that I felt like I had to include) from DA was:

Quote
She looks very similar to a slimmer leanne crowe (44-30-38 = 34k, 5'7). Definitely perkier and fuller than Anya sakova (40-25-36 =32G, 5'5) but also has more hips and a bigger butt than Anya. I'm guessing she's got a 30" band, and I am guessing Aonar is right because a smaller band and same cup as Anya would look proportionally bigger.

So, running numbers from those, I'd throw out:
30g,-26-37 = 38-26-37

Most extreme (if she's thinner than I estimated above) I'd say 28h-25-36 = 37-25-36.

Not claiming any expertise, just guessing.

Although I like your estimate better  ;D  The average guess was "G", with one "H", and one "F" I think.  I thought the result would be higher, but I probably didn't consider before that I'm comparing her to models who are much taller.  I'm kind of happy/satisfied with the hips estimate, I've tried to make her more shapely over the years (she started out almost straight up and down physically).  A 5' 3" asian with 37 inch hips would probably be pretty impressive.

Maybe I should split the difference between 42" and 38"?

Recently I've started hearing that some percentage of people were having trouble telling the characters apart, although others disagree.  My first solution is to add color (something that has been requested anyway), although only flat non-shaded colors at the moment.  I'm also going to consider if I need to alter some of the characters who have appeared less so far (Lucy, Mira+Arim).

A little "flat" color like that is perfect! The cherry atop the sundae, as it were.

Thanks.  I'm still debating if I should stick with flat colors or try to go with shaded colors (which would take a lot longer to make each page).  A couple of people complained about the change, preferring B&W, but I guess I've had mixed feelings as well.  Each option has it's own strengths.

I'm on board with the "flat" colors!  More than that isn't really necessary, unless you're really gung-ho about it.

I've been meaning to weigh in on the new Pulse (not that my opinion should matter to you), but in short: lovin' it!  The old one was enjoyable, but I felt a little lost at several points in the story, like I missed pieces here and there (which I might have--I didn't visit your old site as regularly); the new version has incorporated backstory/exposition effectively while keeping the narrative streamlined.  Which is my long-winded way of saying that I used to get confused by the previous iteration of Pulse, but not at all with this one.  So...great job, and keep up the good work!   :D

I agree... the flat fields of color suit the strong, linear style of the artwork well. :)

number3fac:
Thanks.  I did though end up adding shading to the colors, hopefully I'll be able to keep up, or worst case there will just be pages with flat colors (that I'll have to go back and finish at some point).  My reasoning was that I couldn't think of a good plan for the older pages.  If I do back and color them, I'd either have to remove the shading, or have shading only up until a point.

I'm glad you are liking the story so far.  There's probably an advantage to doing the same thing twice, but I really tried to have a plan in advance and to introduce ideas or people more slowly.  Before when I was switching between comics (and there was sometimes years between chapters of one series or another), I always felt like I had to make up for the long absence by having the story move really quickly.  This time, I also tried to simplify the backstories or purpose of everyone else but Annie, or have her more connected to everyone.  A complaint in the original was that the story often seemed side-tracked by non-Annie elements.

I welcome suggestions, opinions, or feedback from anyone.  There might be an interesting idea, a problem that I haven't noticed, or a request that'll fit in to the story.  Grace was a request from Prophet Tenebrae for a goth.  Mira and Arim were a request from Varchild for female enemies.  A more recent request from Tenebrae was Annie trying on one of her old bras.  It'll probably come up in the next chapter or the one after, in a scene that I had already planned where Annie and Lucy are going through Annie's old clothes (and deciding what she can still wear).  It'll also make the checkered bikini canon, as it's probably among the things she had but can't wear anymore.

Palomine:
Based on feedback (and a poll I had on DA), people do seem to prefer flat colors to shaded B&W.  Although two people at ComicFury (a place also I post the comic) complained, preferring B&W.

This version of Pulse now is longer Than the Adept.  The next milestone would be PeEVEed which was 106 pages.

Just had a crazy idea to write a story based solely on these 'fragments' of your illustrations... I'm sure it would be a totally different tale!

My wildly uninformed speculation on what's to come:

*Annie shows up just as the Mimic becomes desperate to make contact
*The Mimic gets her hands on Annie
*The Mimic either:
A) Demonstrates/unlocks some "hidden"/unaccessed part of Annie's power and/or armor; or,
B) Becomes Jungle Girl  ;)

number3fac, I'm not sure if it's obvious yet which of your predictions were right.  But there's kind of two big surprises in this storyline.  The first one is on the next page.

Looks like the secret armor powers are being unleashed!  Should be interesting to see that payoff.

I don't recall that being one of the twists from the original version of the comic...was it always an element of the series, or something you came up with when reworking things?

No, this was something new.  In the original their suits were just destroyed and replaced with newer models.  I wanted a few events that were similar to things in the original.  In the older comic, the character who was Tabitha was an impostor.  I thought that was too complicated for someone other than the main character, but thought a double was an interesting idea, so that both characters would exist in a way.  It also seemed useful for them to get a preview of what they will be like when they earn the second form of their suits.  Zoe here is kind of Anya from the original comic.

This is the end of chapter 8.  The fight continues in chapter 9, with Annie getting involved.  Then chapter ten is a short chapter about the Silver Dragon.  Then chapter eleven is Annie moving from her single room back into a double room with Lucy (it was mentioned that it was going to happen a few chapters ago).

Oh, I think I have just determined "the plan".
Of course there is no way for me to prove that I am correct.
For if I say it here then Lightfoot could modify the story and I would not want to cause that.

Suffice to say every good superhero has a Achilles heel. Creative exploitation/compensation of that weakness either by a foe or the hero makes for good stories.

One could almost make a flowchart of "What to do if..." for superheros.
If presented with foe of type X then counter with action Y, etc.

That action is typically based on the exploitation of an inherent weakness that is not readily apparent.
As with the current antagonist - a mimic / metamorphic character...

For a MIMIC / METAMORPHIC character
The typical counters are:
1) Prevent the mimic from using their ability, e.g. prevent them touching you or getting a new shape (i.e. Rouge), render them **61** (i.e. Mystique), create a situation where changing actually does not help or makes things worse (i.e. Beastboy, Morph), etc.
2) Overwhelm or otherwise saturate them with new ability they can not control or understand how to use, e.g. the opposite of Option 1 (This has been used with Rouge, Warlock, Wildcard, etc.)
3) Exploit a "hidden" weakness in the current form taken or power being copied.

There are surprising number of shape shifting characters out there and almost as many counters to them. Coming up with the counter when dealing with a doppelganger actually provides insight into the person or power being copied. When handled well it can be a good metaphor to move the story along or indirectly deal with issues that the actual character could or would not.

In Pulse I wonder what power Annie has that another might not be able to control or be able to compensate for?

On of the best exploits of Option 3 was used in the conclusion of Disney's Aladdin.
Title: Re: Pulse Returns
Post by: number3fac on April 05, 2013, 11:05:05 PM
Don't forget the other oft-used resolution when you have a "team" facing a group of opponents with identical/similar powersets:  Switch opponents (also known as "perfectly symmetrical violence never solves anything").

Although for a semi-comedic victory, we could see the Mimic reach for her intended blond target (Tabitha, right?), only for a last-second switch to Annie and finding herself wackily unbalanced due to top-heaviness.  ;)

I'd probably still go through with something even if a short-term story element was guessed (which this is short-term in the scheme of a comic), and only a percentage of readers would even see it (considering this isn't the comic site).  This isn't going to end suddenly, more than one of those counters actually happens.  If I ever made Pulse into books (either sorting them into "books" figuratively, or had them printed as books) this chapter would be the end of the first book (and I guess the short chapter that is next), so I wanted this to be a challenge for them.

My original plan for this chapter more involved the typical issues where they couldn't figure out which was which.  But she doesn't know either of them well enough to pretend to be them, so I went in a different direction.  Although I do have two different endings, but they are sort of a similar theme.

Kind of like the Incredible Hulk, or the Invincible Iron-Man- she's the Delicious Pulse.

Has it been 14 years already? Sheesh!

It's 14 if you are counting since the creation of the Stone of Adventure site.  It's 15 if you are counting when I started drawing Pulse.  If she was a real person, the original once eighteen y.o. Annie would be in her thirties.  Even the 2010 twenty y.o. reboot Annie has only aged weeks-months.

I still like the Original Pulse story and art a tiny bit more - I feel it fits her character just slightly more. But, yes it does feel like time flies at times. The first time I drew Kithara (as a bunny girl) was in the summer of 1991. That was 23 years ago!

The current Pulse story is very engaging and more polished - and to think that the checker board bikini just started as a one-off piece. Keep the cool stuff coming LF.

Here is Annie from 13 years ago -

Some people I suspect just dislike reboots, some are unhappy many of the characters are smaller busted, and some are unhappy that there isn't nudity this time.  I've heard each of those complaints, but I'm not sure which one is the most prominent.

Here is Annie from 13 years ago -

And that's only from 13 years ago, one-two years into the comic.  It's actually page 58, not 14 (you can see it says Pulse #4 on the top.  I used to follow the method used by many long-form comics and every chapter had a page one.  I eventually decided that was confusing and adopted my current method.

I liked the simpler line style and slightly more comic book feel with deep shadows and character blocking - it seemed to go along with her recollections and Jungle Girl day dreams.

As far as the reboot - I think it is great. The first run was right out of the gate. With reflection you made it clear that the story could be told in a better way in your opinion.

many of the characters are smaller busted
I have no problem with the smaller busts and in fact I like the variation as it makes things a bit more realistic and puts Pulse in perspective. Nudity did seem a bit much the first time too. Just how many shower scenes does one have in a day?

It's actually page 58
Regarding the comic numbering conventions - you will note that the PNG file is number 58, hence the actual ordinal number of that strip is rather obvious to anyone who notices details like that.

The only critique between the previous and current telling of the Pulse story is that I miss the greater sense of "discovery" and revelation from the first. Things occur a bit fast I think this time around and there are a few times that the unfamiliar might be caught saying "Why did that happen or who is that person?"

I mentioned that same thing about some of the later PeEVEd installments when those uninitiated into the world of those particular video games might not have the back story and subtle things like inside jokes and allusions would be lost.

I did use a lot of black.  I'm not sure why I moved out of that.

With Peeved we wanted variation.  Honestly with Pulse I wanted Annie to stand out.  I wanted her to be the maximum size I thought I could portray her as a competent superheroine, and then almost everyone else to be fairly normal.  If I was making her physical change seem really dramatic in the story, I needed it to seem dramatic.  She went from the smallest busted to being much bigger busted than anyone else.

I was just mentioning it because it threw me off at first.  I was like "page 14, I don't remember her having her suit that early".

Really?  I've worried that in retrospect I've tried to be too clever a few times and indirectly said things.  Certain people who might not have read the first comic seemed confused about Grace.  Some people critique that the overarching story is moving slowly (the relevance between the present and the beginning).  I wonder if it's the story is moving fast short-term, but slowly long-term.

I kind of look at the first comic as having a lot of plot-points that go nowhere.  I originally planned it to be three comics.  That Sparrow/Tabitha would turn on them and Annie would have to defeat her.  When I decided that Sparrow/Tabitha would stick around and the comic would last longer, I had to start adding in new elements.  I added Connor's past, Nigel Robbins, Annie's dreams where she is Jungle Girl, Annie had to be in her suit to avoid growing when she was out of her room, and The Silver Dragon.  Then that ended and I for a while started embracing the idea of it being an adult comic.  I added in some more adult scenes, ignored Annie always having to wear her suit, Mira and Arim.  Then I changed my mind again and started adding in more complex story elements and toning down the adult elements like when I started going into the history.  I sort of kept changing my mind about what I wanted it to be.  I also because I was rotating between different comics, I kept skipping over planned events to make it seem like time had moved ahead.  I later regretted not keeping them as beginners for a longer time.

In the reboot I may have sped through some of the beginning because I was trying to keep old readers interested.  Kind of like how different Spider-Man movies focus more or less on the origin.  I tried to come up with a streamlined path while wasting as little as possible.  My attempt was to review what I saw as flaws of the original and try to solve them, although maybe this one just has different flaws.  People seemed to also be confused when Tabitha fought a double of herself.  Maybe I didn't pull that off in an ideal way.  Maybe I'm making it too complex.

Hopefully it isn't that it's hard for non-older readers to understand things.  I have however put in easter eggs for older readers, although one doesn't come to mind right now.

One thing that's true in both is that usually it's one action chapter and then one non-action chapter.

I mentioned that same thing about some of the later PeEVEd installments when those uninitiated into the world of those particular video games might not have the back story and subtle things like inside jokes and allusions would be lost.

Yeah, maybe in retrospect we should have used fake games that we could introduce and then use as examples.

Ah, you ran out of ink?

That just begs the question if you should have a superheroine who is slightly larger just to have the comparative chance - showing that any bigger and Annie would be more inhibited. Thus giving reasons to why Annie does the sort of size limiting actions she does while still liking her "new" size.

Some people critique that the overarching story is moving slowly (the relevance between the present and the beginning).  I wonder if it's the story is moving fast short-term, but slowly long-term.
Pace, can be a very tricky thing in comics. (says the robot and bunny girl that took 4 years to get out of their back yard party in their comic)

The trick with complexity is to have layers of complexity. The page may be simple, the chapter moderately so and the story arc complex.

Hopefully it isn't that it's hard for non-older readers to understand things.  I have however put in easter eggs for older readers, although one doesn't come to mind right now.
I swear if you have a lavender bunny girl in the background somewhere my circuits would just ping!

That probably would have given you more material to work with without the constrictions of preexisting cannon.

Ah, you ran out of ink?

That would be ironic.  Until 2010 I drew everything by hand, since then I draw everything digitally (in Sketchbook Pro usually).  I'm not sure when it changed, but I did use up a lot of Sharpie pens before.  Although I wouldn't fill in big black areas, I'd use draw around the edges and then fill it on the computer.

That just begs the question if you should have a superheroine who is slightly larger just to have the comparative chance - showing that any bigger and Annie would be more inhibited. Thus giving reasons to why Annie does the sort of size limiting actions she does while still liking her "new" size.

I'm not sure I'd want to introduce a character who might seem unhappy in that way.  That might be part of why I decreased Annie, I had trouble portraying her as an effective superheroine the first time.  I decided to change her enough to make her seem more effective.

Also, I can't guess if Annie will get bigger on her own by accident or intentionally.  She has a little room to grow if I ever wanted.  And some readers have said they thought she's gotten bigger as the comic has continued (or at least early on when it was still black and white), so if that's true, it can happen by accident as well.  (although it's likely just style and proportional changes, or maybe even that I was accidently drawing her too small at first).

There's also the motivation to make Annie seem somewhat unique in her change.  And also if I introduced someone larger it would make her seem more common.  She's more special if I didn't.

The trick with complexity is to have layers of complexity. The page may be simple, the chapter moderately so and the story arc complex.

I've always had wildly different opinions from people.  Some people seem to be able to litterally predict what's going to happen.  Some seem to follow it but are always surprised.  Some are always asking which character is currently appearing.

I swear if you have a lavender bunny girl in the background somewhere my circuits would just ping!

I haven't decided if I want to put any guest appearances in Pulse yet (it's only been 189 pages).  If I ever wanted to sell a collected print volume it would complicate things maybe.

That way if there is any "problems" with a bound future set there is plausible denial...

If I add cameos, I'll put in Kithara.  Actually unlike the old comics, I've only even once hinted that this might share the same universe with any of the other comics I draw.  In one comic, Grace has a Nani from Peeved action figure in her room.  A lot of the cameos I've had instead are characters who will appear later in the comic.  You saw Grace way in advance several times, Charlotte, Zoe (the Shapeshifter), and maybe some others I've forgetting.

I'm probably taking a break for a week or two, then chapter 14.  I'll think about this.

(although it's likely just style and proportional changes, or maybe even that I was accidentally drawing her too small at first).

There's also the motivation to make Annie seem somewhat unique in her change.  And also if I introduced someone larger it would make her seem more common.  She's more special if I didn't.

I like that you have much more of a "backstory" or reasons why your characters do things or act or look the way they do. I also like that you have more variety in your universe without all the women and men looking as if they are models.

What I was getting at with a possible character the same or slightly larger than Annie was not to show how such frontage could be a hindrance or that the other person was somehow unhappy but rather to accomplish two story enriching aspects.
1) To demonstrate how well Annie is dealing with the whole size changing issues by providing a point of reference.
2) To give a better "reason" why Annie would employ methods of size management other than not liking being too big.

As is stands I feel this telling of the story has Annie not nearly as "happy" with her physical changes. The first time out not only was her growth more evident it actually was shown as an event, with others reacting or even specific panels depicting it. I can think of two instances with her suite "resizing". She also seemed to integrate this peculiar idiosyncratic super-power a little better.

The new telling does feel more realistic in how all the characters are acting, even Annie - however I feel she really is not responding to her obvious physical changes. Now given the lab environment and the range of other characters this version explains this non-reaction better but it does seem as she has no or little reaction at all.

I did like how there have been "references" to her physique changes via other characters, the bra steeling teleporter, the mild envy of her paraplegic friend, and the inferences gained from the shapeshifter. My suggestion of a busty equivalent that was not grounded in fixation, jealousy or usurpation but rather a brief encounter that reaffirms that Annie can and will be capable and effective regardless of her physical changes.

I see it now, Annie goes to the underground mall (yes there is one, just roll with it) and goes to Kithara's Closet of Intimate Apparel and Bra Emporium(TM) where while getting a new fitting she happens to talk with a particular lavender bunny. Through flash back or other recollection Annie recounts some random bust related incident only to have the proprietor explain that how this is actually reaffirming and ultimately strengthening. Annie thanks the bunny for the insight curious as to how she knows this only to have the rabbit-gal step from behind the counter to reveal an equal decolletage. They share a silent knowing smile and Annie leaves swinging her new purchases in the store's telltale lavender bag feeling just a bit better about everything - the end.  ;D

KCIABE now there is an acronym.

I think being able to look back on your mistakes allows you to make a new story that has fewer flaws.  Both a story of any kind, and also a story that you've told before.  Also a lot of the old comics had the problem where I originally planned them to be very short, and then tried to add on to them.

I've had people complain the exact opposite before, that they are all too good looking.  I've been trying to make them look more unique.

It's also possible that part of me wants as few characters her size or bigger.  The more there are, the less unique she becomes.  In the current universe there are only two--  Annie and Juno.  If anyone else, it might be Sharon Winsor from the older comic.

I've had suggestions before to add a giant-busted character who had powers that were not meant for combat.

My suggestion of a busty equivalent that was not grounded in fixation, jealousy or usurpation but rather a brief encounter that reaffirms that Annie can and will be capable and effective regardless of her physical changes.

Looking back, I felt like Annie was too positive in her changes, although in the original it was something she seemed to view as a flaw.  I wanted to alter the story a little so that it didn't seem like her becoming more curvy solved all of her problems.  That she and Thomas were already together, and that she wasn't quite as spinning out of control and ignoring it.

I agree she's not reacting that much, but I felt like she's also not reacting that much to the several times she's almost died.  I felt like she's trying to ignore all of that and push forward to the goal she wants, and then it's going to all come rushing out at some point?  Although maybe that's the wrong plan.  I didn't want for it to too take over the story earlier.  Also I wanted her to be positive about it eventually, but not right away.  I wanted her to start out with a mixed reaction and then over time learn to appreciate the change.

Some of the other things people have critiqued recently are that I could be more consistent on my proportions, that in long fights the backgrounds could less similar, that the some of the side characters could use more characterization (like Annie's father and Connor), that there isn't enough variety in the men, that there isn't always a big emotional connection to events happening, and that Tabitha's body type is too similar to Annie.

I wonder if some might get their clothes from inside the complex.  I mean where would Thunderpunch shop instead?  Although I'm not sure Annie is big enough that she couldn't buy bras from a regular place.

Someone coated her with something that hardened and she's breaking out of it.  I guess I made it that color because it stood out from the background.

No no no, you made it purple because that is the best color there is! (Says the purple robot and bunny-girl)

I am a tiny bit confused however as to the source of the purple goo - Not you Palomine - as it sort of appears suddenly. I keep thinking that it was from the purple armor gal but now I am not so sure as her abilities appear to be black in nature...
Anyway a bleak purpleish landscape interesting... Starts me thinking about a particular bunny-girl still stuck in such a land... hmmm.

Keep up the good work!

On the newest page?  Evilyn's beam is black with a purple aura around it.  I'm assuming everything it hits turns purple (maybe only coated with something that can be cleaned off).  All of the stuff on the ground are the leaves and brush that was destroyed by her blast.

She's a little like Cyclops from the X-Men, except it's that she always fires at full-power.  The visor is just meant to help her limit the strength of her blasts.  She can also steer them (as was kind of shown), but without being able to see where she is shooting, her blast was moving slowly enough to be shot by the robots.  That made the blast which must be pretty unstable explode.

Maybe her visor also has cameras that allow her to see what the twins and the robots see?  That would allow her to shoot crazy beams around things.

Last page of chapter 15.

Pulse is going on hiatus for a few months.  I'm going to try to finish up on backer pictures for the Peeved Kickstarter, which I hope I have enough information to complete them.  It's taken ten times longer than I ever expected, both with collecting all of the information needed, and also sending incremental pictures for feedback.  Hopefully during that time, or after it's complete I'll get enough of the story to continue the Peeved comic.  There's 30+ pages left, so even when I can start drawing it, worse case of a page a week would take months.

Interesting that one's powers decline with age..... As if getting old weren't bad enough.

A small percentage of people don't lose their powers, or they might keep them a decade or two beyond the average.  Or maybe they lose them earlier.  It might depend on the powers.

A-Class heroes keep their powers through they entire lives.  Although the last known one died in the 1950s.  They are almost god-like in general, and typically live for a few hundred years.

Uh-oh. That's not good...

Things will get a lot worse before they get better.  This upcoming 12-page chapter is the climax of the Sleepwalkers arc, with the chapter after that being the aftermath.

A TV show would be saying something like "WHO WILL DIE!".  (Although I don't think ever killed a character in a comic before, so there isn't that much of a threat of someone dying.)

That guy looks like a Doctor Who villain.....

I thought he needed to be unique and memorable, I knew he'd appear on a few pages (a while ago), and then show up and be an important part of the story here.

...To me, he looks like he should have ice powers...  Sometimes you design people and then look back and wonder why you made those choices.

Whoa... did she just unlock the next level of her suit??!?

Yes.  Tabitha always unlocked parts of her suit when she was trying to protect Annie from a giant threat.

The next few chapters are the aftermath of what happened here (and from what happens on the next few pages), and some flashbacks.  But the storyline after that is the other girls with similar suits arrive (teased back when Nigel Robbins was first introduced).  I wanted Tabitha to have the next level of the suit, but Annie not have it at that point.

Getting Shakespearean in your dialogue? 8)

People have critiqued me in the past that everyone talks in a similar voice, so I thought I should take a chance with Connor's "dead" wife.  I had planned more unusual speech for Mira and Arim, but when I started having to write the dialog for them, it didn't mesh.  I wanted all of their speech to be phased as a question.  I think I'm usually too careful to avoid making people sound silly.

Delphi is kind of a combination of Wonder Woman and Thor, so there seemed to be an obvious choice to make her talk in an unusual way.  I've gotten a lot of reader corrections on just about every page where I've made mistakes on her speech.

Next page too.  My best explanation about how what Thomas did to accidentally alter the future caused Annie to be BE'd.  I feel like most of the comic so far was building to this flashback storyline.

Update today, page 371 "The Other Half"

One more page in the past, then a series of recap pages mid-week to show past events in a new light before the comics goes back the present.

Yeah, was wondering what happened to you. Usually like clockwork you update on Thursday or Friday but you were a little late this week. I was wondering if you had been victimized by this coronavirus, which should be called the CCP virus or Chinese Communist Party virus since they are the ones that covered up, delayed and lied about it for too long which caused so much of a global problem. >:( Fuck Communism.

I feel like this is one of those times were everyone needs to confirm they are still okay, just like 9/11.  Everyone is going to have interesting stories.  I've just been busy, trying to make things work remotely.  I'm okay, I don't even know anyone sick, but there are 34 people with it in my county.  I'm normally a hermit lurker, so some parts of life aren't that different.

Normally any comic that isn't complete by Saturday just becomes the comic for the next week, but I thought I needed to post something.

Four pages of recaps to remind everyone of current events, and some things that might seem different after this long flashback.  Back to the present this week.

I had originally planned on more pages for the recap, so it could be more complete, but then thought I should just finish out the four pages of the chapter.  Maybe it's too short, or maybe it's okay.

Thanks.  I appreciate that.

I have slowed down myself though, I used to update with several pages a week.  Although they didn't usually have any shading or complex coloring, and the art was more sloppy sometimes.  Maybe things would even if I made the comics simpler?  Many times, I think the more we create the less we create because we're more careful, and we're trying to do something that isn't exactly the same as what we made before.  You're going through a mine-field of accidentally doing the same thing you did before.

I know Pulse has been more of a big-bust thing for all but a few events, but I have a slice of life side-comic I'm working on that'll have more continuous BE.  Kind of like a slow-burn growth story instead of huge growth explosions.

Wow, that would be challenging.  I have the original files of some things, but I'm missing the original files for other things.  Earlier this year I was going to try to create larger versions of the old comics, but there were lots of things I couldn't find on old backup CDs and DVDs.  I had all of My Big Life, the Adept, and the shorter comics.  But I'm missing random PeEVEed chapters, the last few chapters of the old Pulse, and the last few chapters of Missing Materia.  So the 2007ish to 2010ish installments to long comics.

I have all of the web versions of everything (I think), but they are usually only 630 pixels wide.  I had the originals for the first two chapters of the old Pulse, but most of them wouldn't open.  They were in Fractal Design Painter .riff format.  Either they are broken files, or the trial of the modern Corel Painter can't open most of them.  I'll have to bust out the old Power Mac G3 and see if it can open them.

There's also the issue that I didn't make some of those comics by myself.  There are periods were someone else colored pages, Sickboy drew 3-4 pages of the old Pulse, I had a co-writer for certain series, there were cameos, some were gift items to other authors, some were comics for webcomic guest weeks, some was adult and some wasn't.  It's possible that not everything could be included.  ...that is kind of annoying.

It's something to think about.

It's possible that for some of the old comics, the only way to get larger versions of the pages at this point is to trace them... or remake or redraw them?  I'm not sure which would be the faster option.  Unless there's some kind of AI resizer.

Is "Upgraded" the right word? Is "Augmented" or "Enhanced" closer to the plot?

To me, upgraded sounds like a modification in addition to the base state.
Have I just been missing the point that Annie was always a battery?
I thought she gain those abilities through experimentation and didn't start out that way.

Also, a little bummed to hear about some of those missing or un-opening files from the early years. It is so interesting to look back on the early work.

Kithara and I keep talking about resurrecting our KC Strip comic. There is still a small pile of her scripts and story arcs sitting in a binder (I can just see it on the shelf as I type this). We even left things sort of hanging... so maybe when life gets a little more normal. Still even have that one-off cross-over with Pulse that made it as far as pencils and three pages out of five or so.

Thanks for the update alerts.

I used the word upgrade because that's also the title of the chapter, and they had previously talked about trying to force Annie's suit to upgrade to the second form like Tabitha's did previously.  I thought using that word would connect the reveal to Annie's Mother to the other narrative about Annie's suit.  I also wanted Tabitha to be so vague it wouldn't really explain anything.

In the original (2000-2008) Pulse comic, Annie didn't have powers until the experiment.  In this (2010-) Pulse reboot, Annie has always had powers and the experiment was to increase her trivial energy powers.  I did that because I wanted to pick a theme to this version of the story.  In the older version there were a lot of spy elements in addition to the superhero stuff.  With the reboot I thought I should narrow the focus and stick to superheroes and tech.  Connor became an ex-Superhero, both of her parents had or have powers,  Lucy has powers, Grace has powers.  Having Annie start out with powers also made it so the process that gave or increased her powers didn't have to be an accident.

I also wanted to change things up for people who would kind of have to sit through the same story again, and also streamline the parts that were focused on a lot in the older comic.  BUT then also not end up with a result that would be so completely different it was a completely different comic.  To try to find some perfect reboot mixture.

Also, a little bummed to hear about some of those missing or un-opening files from the early years. It is so interesting to look back on the early work.

I do have the web versions still.  I even have many backups of the SOA site, both at the end, and from a few different years.  Worst case, I'd have to trace the old pages to get bigger versions.

I know how that is, it can be a big commitment to work on a webcomic.  There were a few years where I had to let everything go on hiatus.  I worked on new pages as I could and didn't post them, and almost never came back, worried that I didn't have enough built up.  I still never have a buffer of pages, I have a page to finish now for today that isn't done.

Honestly I usually find teasing more interesting visually than showing everything- but while the comic is PG-13, I do at least once or twice a year draw her topless in pictures and post them the usual places like DA or my NSFW Twitter.  This one is from 2019.

The current vote incentive on the Pulse website is a different NSFW picture of Annie too.

"B-Class" Heroes?

You mean the West Coast Avengers? ;D

I am sometime a robot who doesn't understand jokes and just accepts everything as literal when sometimes it's a joke, but I don't know if everyone remembers the reference to an early page, but there is a power level ranking in the comic.  And just in case, I think I should explain-

A-Class is the highest possible power level ranking-- but there is no one alive with that ranking.  Someone with this level is more like a demi-god than a human.  They live for hundreds of years and have many kinds of powers.  The last two died fighting eachother in the 1950s or 1960s (I can't remember which but there was a statue on a previous page for him).  An example of would be someone like Superman.

B-Class is actually the highest plausible power ranking in the comic.  The Silver Dragon, Mastermind, and Thunderpunch are examples of a B-Class.  They are very very powerful humans.  Non-Pulse examples would range from Magneto, to Doctor Strange, to the Flash.

C-Class is the average active superhero.  Mira, Arim, Evilyn, Charlotte, and Tabitha (with her suit upgrade) are examples of a C-Class.  Non-Pulse examples would range from Spider-Man to Black Panther.

D-Class is the lowest active superhuman ranking.  Pulse is an example of this class, although sometimes people are in this class because they aren't well-trained with their powers.  Non-Pulse examples would range anywhere from early Iron Man to Movie Captain America.

E-Class is the lowest level of superhuman powers.  It's someone who has powers, but they aren't useful or powerful enough for them to be a superhero.  Annie and Tabitha started out at this level.

I've thought about doing that, but to be honest, I'm not sure I'd ever been certain enough that the pages didn't have some kind of major flaw in them I've never noticed.  I've have some people point out typos 5-6 years after the pages were posted.  I've also meant to color all of the early pages, and I've only got two chapters left (although I haven't made any progress in a few years).

Having usually made web items that can always be altered, it's kind of a difficult idea to consider making some thing permanent.

I figure in a superhero world, anything weak or unskilled enough for Pulse to handle must be incomplete.  In an ideal situation, it would be strong enough to easily defeat her (at this point).

Webcomics can be like that.  You have to be prepared to put a decade or more into one, it's never the quick thing it seems like it should be.  The funny part is that I'd bet when I started I would have guessed I'd already have it completed in 500 pages or less, and now I'm guessing it'll only be another 125 pages?  I might be underestimating how many pages are left even now.

Congrats on passing that milestone, Lightfoot!  I'm glad to hear you're creating this as a self-contained story, and not going to drag it out until it's a zombie of it's former self, like the big comic companies do.

Yeah, my plan is to have an ending, but one where I could come back to it in some way if I wanted.  My plan is that after Pulse is finished to do intentionally short comic series that only take a year or two to complete, so 52 to 104 pages total.  Then there could always be a year or two Pulse story in there if wanted.

Had to mention when a human sized bipedal pastel colored suddenly showed up I did pause for a second... then I saw the stitching lines and the color is not lavender...  ::)
Just recalling our discussions from back in 2014.

I do enjoy when you put in little details in the more casual scenes as it makes the world deeper and more organic, like there are other things, people, and events happening.

I like that you have much more of a "backstory" or reasons why your characters do things or act or look the way they do. I also like that you have more variety in your universe without all the women and men looking as if they are models.

I wonder if some might get their clothes from inside the complex.  I mean where would Thunderpunch shop instead?  Although I'm not sure Annie is big enough that she couldn't buy bras from a regular place.

I wanted to put Charlotte in an outfit that isn't an animal she can turn into with her normal powers.  I also thought a bright pink animal would be the opposite "dark" approach of Annie's disguise.  I figure maybe it's from some kind of job she once had standing outside a store with a sign.  Annie was going to explain it before, and maybe she will later, but it didn't seem to fit in to the events that already happened yet.

I guess it was longer than I thought.  I was just busy with nothing interesting or important enough to mention, I always notice when the end of the week is coming up and I should update with a comic, but some weeks you are just too far behind to post anything.

I do have two other comics I occasionally update also that I'm not sure I've ever mentioned here-

Maximum Max, a slice of life comic strip with slow-burn BE (but the BE hasn't started yet)-
https://maximum.webcomic.ws/ (https://maximum.webcomic.ws/)

and

Materia Enhanced, a different Final Fantasy comic (from the Missing Materia one I used to do), but with BE and the same characters from the previous one.
https://materia.webcomic.ws/ (https://materia.webcomic.ws/)

They both are also posted on my DeviantArt account though, so if you follow me there, you've already see them.

Yeah, I'm hoping life will get more predictable soon and updates will become more predictable.  It's not anything bad, just a big non-art task I'm helping build.

Love the last two panels.....

Originally it was going to be different.  She was originally scared of her mother's message, but then I thought she'd actually be depressed.  I thought I'd end with a pinup-y shot considering she'll be gone for a few pages.

Why am I getting a "kung fu" / "Shaolin Temple" vibe here?

Is it because I've been reading about Chinese martial arts movies lately?

I was just going for a manga-like Tournament arc.  We've already had hot springs, but no trip to the beach yet exactly.

Tabitha's thing is that she's into anime/Japan.  So I was trying to think of a common anime weird childhood.
