Title: So I Got a New Computer
Post by: rtpoe on November 28, 2018, 08:35:51 PM
Not because I wanted to, but because the hard drive on the old one went kerflooey. Eight years of good and faithful service.....

Fortunately, I back up my stuff every six months or so.

Unfortunately, my last backup was five and a half months ago....

Fortunately, I was able to copy off onto a flash drive all my "mission critical" files and things that had been added or modified since the last backup (and I keep my erotica on an external drive anyway).

So, I'm now running Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron (the specs don't really matter to me). I've uploaded/recovered my old files, tweaked the UI to something I can tolerate, got the latest versions of all the little utility files that I use, and I'm trying out some of the new software that it comes with. I'll be gradually reorganizing all my data files over the next few weeks - it's amazing how many places things wind up in when you're doing it one or two media files at a time.

Am I forgetting anything? Is there something I should do (set up a Restore Point, perhaps) regarding, for example, drive partitions? Is it a good and useful thing to store stuff in "the cloud"?

Any advice from you experts?

Buy a higher rated Synology NAS and run Active Backup for Business. I set up against every PC in the house. Only thing, I have the schedules in the night and you need to keep the PC running. Right now I backup agentless with SMB shared drives, but Active Backup now provides agents for the backup of PC. I might change to this, soon.

From my main PC it is backing up between 3 and 20 GB changed files per day, a total of 200 GB per month.

The cheapest solution, to keep your data safe buy a second quality harddrive for your data. If a harddrive fails it's usually the HD that contains your OS, partitions on that same drive are also doomed.

A cheaper alternative to a NAS is a WD "My Cloud", it's the size of thick book and it's even recognised by smart-TV's.

This is how I've things setup 1 ssd as boot device, 1 ssd 3 HD's for data about 10TB total storage in my computer and a 4TB My Cloud. The oldest of my HD's has been going for over 10 years now (WD RE 3 1002FBYS)

True it is cheaper, but I love cool stuff ...

I already have a 500 GB hard drive that I use ONLY for backups. Heck, I never even plug it in and turn it on unless I'm backing something up. It ought to last sufficiently long. Right now, that's plenty of space for me.

What I'm looking for are any sort of tweaks that will help me maintain this new PC in decent condition, or useful little utilities that I may not know about.

Thanks,

The last version of Windows I've used was Windows 7 and since I refuse to upgrade to Malware 10...well, let's just say that I agree with everyone else said about backups. Have an offsite backup that you swap out in grandfather-father-son configuration for a bit more peace of mind.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, I meant a second internal HD in the computer just for data. This second HD is a lot less prone to faliure then the boot drive. A WD BLACK 1 TB costs about $75 (500GB is $5 less)

Keep a Windows PC healthy .... well.
Then take an intial backup as image after you have installed and configured all your basic applications, before you start to work. And store you data on a 2nd HDD as mentioned keep it seperated from the OS and Applications. This explicity means don't use the windows default file location of your user account C:/users/<user account>
Somewhere in Windows is a place you can change that to a custom drive. But still then some idiotic Applications from 3rd party still only want to safe to c:/users/ ....

In case you keep your data and the OS/Applications seperate you can easily restore.

One tool I started to love a lot is Driver Booster currently in version 6.1. Maybe it is chinese spyware or other data collection type spyware like Book of Faces, but with this tool I reduce the needed time in driver search by 95%. I once had a program that also did support me with updates on programs, but that tool was discontinued by that providing company. And since then I have to do manyually again ... what a pitty.
If someone knows a good tool supporting me on automatic or half-automatic application updates, I would be glad to know.

Kithara got a new computer a little while back, a custom build and it is rather nice as she is at home a great deal and plays lots of games. Our ISP is very good but their hardware is problematic from time to time, just enough that it had motivated Kithara to ask to change it.

So, we are changing providers. Luckily we live where we have at least 3 fiber optic options so we should not have a speed change. However we will be off-line starting in about two days and it might take a while for me to get everything back to the way we like it. So, if you don't hear from either of us it is due to technical issues and not health related.

Thanks for the heads up, Nimrod. Hoping you and Kithara remain well.

Good to hear from you!
If the screen fills up with whitespace, she might need to move back from the keyboard, as her amazing chest is probably just resting on the space bar.  ;D :D
