I just came back from Siggs(convention for 3d modelers and animators) I notice a inquiry about what 3d program to look for in the pallette in the last 6 month. I am not fond of poser because it was never ment to be a stand alone product but for adding human element into drawing for presentation. I do like some of the work that has come out of poser, and feel that if these individual were talented enough to produce such quality, then I urge them to move on to a real 3d program. If you cant draw well, then many of the 3d program out there uses rotoscope of picture that you can trace from, front view and side view is all you need. Poser doesn't have that option. In animation the feet slide alot in poser, no way to lock constraint of the feet or hands when needed, so archaic joint by joint animation will be tricky. What poser can do is import and export to many of the other program ,including motion file for animation. To get into 3d modeling and to find out if this is what you really want, then I would suggest getting www.wings3d.comIts a free SubD's modeler and the feature are growing all the time. If your on a tight budget then hash animation master is the most pack feature for the money www.hash.comHowever the way the program is written you need to save often, because of memory management of the program.

I agree and disagree with you.. Poser is a great tool for anyone who likes to draw ..It really helps for drawing the human form.. With all the props done in better programs and coverted to poser format you can make some really nice pictures in poser.. I usually use Vue4.2 for background, Sky, terrains ect then import as a background to poser 5.0 and work my models and foreground material and render in poser them polish it all in photoshop.. So a finish work will have used 3 diffrent programs. I agree as a modeling program poser is not the way to go.. I may try those links..thanks! Im playing around learning the free version of 3ds max...G-Max right now. regards PE

I'd also disagree with you. Although poser has some problems, it's focus on the human body and it's large user base are it's biggest strengths. I looked at both of the links you posted and did not see many pictures dealing with people. Let alone attractive pin-up girls. I'm sure a professional package can produce better results. But when you add in the cost of the software and the learning curve, they won't fly far here. Most of the 3-d erotica work I've seen has been based on poser, with some post production work. But feel free to prove me wrong.

if all you want to do is erotic art with preform model then poser is the ticket, I suppose? You haven't seen much nice looking nude female form with a real 3d program? http://www.cgchannel.com/forum/viewthread?thread=2207http://www.cgchannel.com/forum/viewthread?thread=1629Poser is not a real 3d program- like I said its never intended to be a stand alone. Its large user base is depended on the poser compatibility with a real 3d program. All the fundemental of 3d modeling and animation is not there in poser. By the time you spent all your money on clothes and add on for victoria type character, you could of had a pro 3d program. Im not knocking down poser as a program, just that its not a 3d program. But it can be usefull in alot of ways, but wont be able to teach you 3d fundemental. Okay, you want something made with Animation Master-I give you a peak of my work http://www.russellmania3d.pair.com/images/dangergirl0.avi

Yes ! Nice looking model you made there.. I havent decided if 3ds max or lightwave will be the high end program I end up getting.. I havent had time yet to explore the pros and cons of each.. I think alot of Poser models were made in Lightwave.. Yes I do think Poser is just fine for doing Erotic art.. Add photoshop and a wacom tablet and you can make some nice pin-up art .. I am having fun learning how to use G-max..cheers PE

I like the toon shader that 3Ds max have-interesting noteworthy stuff is that the new LW8 will have easier character setup and there are poser import export plugin out there for LW and 3DSmax. I have LW7.5 at the moment and still learning. If you purchase LW8 soon you can get the particle plugin free, and I think LW7.5 is still pretty good and they will go down in price on ebay for around under $500, when LW8 comes out. LW8 has both improve and added soft and hard body physics. Can you imagine boobies motion crashing against a hard press body? Oh! your already there thinking that, okay now. Lightwave has a more of complete tool then 3Dsmax and cheaper too, but if your shooting to get into the gaming industry then go with 3DSmax. Hash animation master has a new version 10.5, the best one they made so far.Improve renderer with multi pass option, and improve hair particle, and particle effect are actually more advance and faster to render than in Lightwave. I've talk to a couple of Lightwave user that use hash to composite sprite particles. However this version is still not finalize as of yet, but pretty close.

You may also want to check out Maya. They are trying to become the gaming industry's new tool for modelling and are making themselves compatable with all sorts of stuff.
I've used gmax and like it. much easier to understand for learning then 3dsmax for sure and of course its free.
Lightwave has some good stuff to it also, for that matter the older truespace was not a bad program either.
3deroticer is correct when he says that poser is not a 3d program in the sense that you can not just create a real model out of that program.
You can however pose and animate in poser with a small learning curve and as Prinz said its great for artists for reference

if anyone who has poser, could check this out. www.wings3d.com is a free 3d modeling program that can import and export wavefront object type file- .obj extension. I know that you can build your own or modify a poser model by swapping a obj file and also can import an obj file. wings3d can do smooth subD's as well and soon will have mapping and animation. the author of this program is making great stride with it.

yeah, I tend to agree with the utilizing of the higher-end 3d progrms for results- especially with the levels of control that one could get with them. Poser is really only good for people who aren't as experienced with 3d, or for people who want to just get something made as fast as possible. Poser models always have artifacts in them, and most notably are really not built for what most people here want to to do with them. They always just seem to lack the proper geometry, and the rigging seems like it can be done so much better.
I personally like 3ds max, albiet i'm not a hardcore 3d person, however in the latest release, max6, software packages and plugins like Reactor have been built right in, and it is also able to accept a lager range of file types (but mostly architectual types though). So anyways, functions in Reactor, namely the soft body and cloth collections, can simulate physics pretty well.
Unfortunatley to the dismay of many, this stuff requires time to learn and a little bit of work. Of course few people are going to see hot naked chicks created with other software packages because 1: Poser is very common and 2: most people can't tell the difference.
I'm all for people building a body from scratch since it allows for so much more. It definatley adds quite a bit more artistic appeal and individuality, but best of all, it's as boundless as people choose to make it.

Vitamin C is using Lightwave 7.5 and soon he will be using LW8 when it comes out, and it'll make rigging so much better.

What a great example. The stuff he started out years ago. In the mean time, Poser models have just gotten better and posted more often. Poser is for the people! Now all the need to do is add a good distributed rendering package for it.

i agrea, i use maya myself but fot the sort of stuff people want here poser is fine, it can do enough tweaks to the differnt figures to make them look diff, if u wanted more power to change even more things and do some really cool freaky stuff then u would want a more high end package, but poser does the jobs here.

Poser IMO tend to look the same and have extreme artifacting when you try to bend them in poses beyond standing straight. Then either you send it thru photoshop to fix it, which blows the animation possibility. It is very difficult to keyframe the animation. Pretty spendy for having a preset model that you cant animate. I dont think Poser is for the people, rather its for those that have money and just want to look at naked 3d model. Nothing wrong with that, but its very limited and spendy to call it the people program.
I think the people are more sophisticated and discriminating when it comes to this poser stuff. Face it with all the special effect movies that are out there, most people are very well educated in the arena of entertainment, and no longer can adults swing their own arm for amusement like a 2 year old **09**. They want more!

Yeah physics or not i just created a poser python script that makes magnets bounce, the result: bouncing breasts when a model runs or walks This is professional enough i think

Ok, I'm going to warn each and everyone of you... I only know of art programs like adobe illustrator and photoshop.
Please bare with me on this. With that said.... I would like to expand my knowledge of artwork. Possibly my ability to be more sellable for a good paying job (by the way does anyone know what a design egineer makes? for automobiles?..side question but it would be nice to know) I know of poser but, I don't feel that's for me. I know you're supposed to start with baby steps...but as one commander stated to me ... you give me a complex situation and I can achieve exactly what I'm supposed to. You give me an easy situation, it'll take me forever to get it done.
I was looking at Maya 6? I believe that's the name of it. I loved teh 3D work I saw from the artwork already created with it. I went to some website yesterday and saw this awe inspiring work made with a 3D program I believe to be Maya 6.
It looks as though this program alone, can do what many programs do when put together. Am I right in this assumption? Also, The work looks more human, real life...would it be safe to include you could create a model or rendering from an actual person?
anyways, I'm looking at getting a program sometime soon for 3 D modeling and animation. I saw many programs that looked good but just didn't have what it took to really catch my eye on the end work. Maya 6 caught me though.
what are your thoughts? anyone?
I'm posting a picture I got from the site I visited. I think it has a url at the bottom or top of the image.
I just was facinated by what I saw.
Any and all information would be helpful.
Later and thanks Alpha

I know the 1 1 1 1 rule and I'm sorry for breaking it. but I wanted to show another aspect of the work ... a different character. When you see these in motion it's just unreal.

Maya is the professional package. If you want to make a living at 3D, you should go for Maya.

Well AZ you picked a honey of a program.. Maya is certainly top notch...get your wallet ready for a big hit though... At present its going to awhile before I can purchase a high end program... The house, car ,family , other hobbys.. I am leaning tward lightwave right now.. Be interesting to see wha lightwave 8.0 can do.. Good luck to you.. cheers PE

Well you two, I want to thank you for your information and advice. I had a feeling maya 6 would set me back about 2 grand plus. That's what I love about work, they hear why we need it and they look into getting it and usually it shows up within a month lol.
Hopefully I will be able to see about making some really cool models not to mention using a few models I know and see if I can make a realistic version on the puter.
Thanks again and I hope to show you guys some work in the near future!
