It's a bad week when the Dow loses over 950 points over the course of two of the first three days. I started the 10570-11800 bracket way back on July 22, so it has managed to last 57 days -- which in these volatile times I feel pretty proud of. Right now we're less than forty points from the bottom of that -- but then you have to recall that the day I announced it we closed at 10602.50, which was even closer. I also have to say that this thread has been a journey of social discovery. Hiram, of course, has been a good friend to it, but I have also appreciated the commiseration of pedonbio. This thread has also taught me new respect for mastert. He warned way back on the top of page 3 of this that this might hit 9999, and that could still come to pass. He doesn't post often, but when he does, he's worth a look-see.

Ages ago one of Lyndon Johnson's economic advisors made a private joke: The only difference between socialists and Republicans was that socialists wanted to give the government both profits and losses; Republicans wanted to keep the profits and give the government the losses.
I didn't think it would become official policy. It has.

10000 will be a big pstchological level. If it breaks thru and can stay under it, it could trigger a sell-off.

I'm more a Chan fan, I would count on him to hurt me in a nuanced and/or glancing way, just to keep me at bay -- Chuck on the other hand might pulverize my trachea. Anyway, I think I have to thank Hiram's country today for allowing my bracket to live on today to fight for another 24 hours. We were down around 10500 earlier, but now the UK seems to be helping to make a boost possible, by halting short-selling till next year. That plus a lot of "plans" getting discussed seems to be reassuring the market to the tune of 11019 plus change. I notice a slight irony to this. One of the favorite McCain TV ads flashes pictures of various Democratic Congressmen, seeming to fairly count on fuzzy public recollection of them -- but not only are Dodd and Reid clearly visible, but so is Schumer -- and Schumer is one of the pols who's been offering a plan which sounds pleasing to the market's ear. If Schumer's suggestion is sound and useful, that'll put a whole other spin on the ad ...

I suppose it's not a good idea to think much during a campaign, but those commercials are really disturbing. A lot of people think the McCain of 2008 is the same McCain who ran in 2000. He's not. In 2000 the Rove Slime Machine defeated him. Somewhere between 2000 and now, he gave up what little integrity he had (SNL thinks it was 2004--Remember the cartoon they made of his "endorsement" of Bush in 2004?) and became as polarizing as Bush. Too bad.

Here's an interesting fact: take 6/26, turn the sixes upside down, and you have today, 9/29 -- and it is exactly the topsy-turvy world of today that has led mastert's suggestion of Dow 9999 way back on 6/26 to begin to win out over my 10570-11800, which has just today cracked asunder on the low end, landing at 10365.45 after plummeting more than 777 points. (!!!)
I'm almost proud. The bracket lasted a whopping 68 days, in spite of intra-day spikes beyond it (I always based it on daily closes), and no way no how could I have predicted that back in July 22 that all this new havoc would have come to pass in the manner it did. If any bets had to be invalidated, this was a day for it.
Over these past eight years, we've seen it sag under 8000 ... but do we really want to return there ... ?

The Dow closed 777.68 points down (6.98%), the largest one-day drop ever.
The Dow closed at 10365.45, lower than the level at the start of the Bush presidency.

Well, except for that yesterday's anomaly, your range still seems to be holding, Druul. Hey, I'm all done revising -- I said if we fell below 10570 I would concede to mastert's 9999.
Now what? The day is young -- but what a beginning.
We are deep into the time machine now. If we hit 9310, that will be a former high we first saw A DECADE AGO.

Russian stock market suspended as index fell 15% - jeez, now that is bad.
What if the Dow falls 15%, what figure will the index fall too?
The UK was down 8% at one point, although it has rallied.

I'm also impressed that your bracket held up for that long. Even though I'm not in the stock market yet, I feel for the average Joe taking a bath, especially those nearing or just entering retirement. However, I am thrilled that all those hedge funds are getting crapped on.
I wouldn't put 9310 out of reach. What scares me is that it seems to be a bank a week that's going under. Wamu 2 weeks ago, Wachovia last week, so who's it gonna be this week. Actually it could be kind of fun trying to predict which banks fail next
