Got to agree with you, Andrat2000. The Dems really need to change their approach.

There's a great piece at Politico about it. Copy pasted at length, because I know you're not going to click the link and read the whole thing,

Heartland Democrats to Washington: You’re Killing Us
New report blames elitist national party for alienating voters, and threatening the party's chances in 2020.
By Michael Kruse, 1/11/18

The report, “Hope from the Heartland: How Democrats Can Better Serve the Midwest by Bringing Rural, Working Class Wisdom to Washington,” lands at a moment, of course, when Democrats are riled up with activist energy but also wrestling with themselves about the direction of their party—their most reliable areas of support having receded to cities, coasts and college towns. In contrast, this report is based on interviews with 72 Democrats who hail from none of those places but rather largely agricultural, blue-collar areas in the vast, eight-state center of the country.

From the Appalachian regions of Ohio to the Iron Range of Minnesota and the northern reaches of Michigan and Wisconsin, across Iowa and Missouri and through the southern swaths of Indiana and Illinois—areas in which Bill Clinton triumphed and Hillary Clinton tanked—the quotes from the 72 rural Democrats Johnson interviewed read like a pent-up primal scream. And [Representative] Terry Goodin’s comments pop out in particular. In the report, he says the Democratic Party is “lazy,” “out of touch with mainstream America,” relying on “too much identity politics” where “winners and losers are picked by their labels.” The Democrats in his district, he laments, “feel abandoned.”

In the parking lot, Goodin ran into a man wearing a well-worn cap with a well-known slogan: “Make America Great Again.” Delmis Burns, I would learn later, drives a truck for a living and has known Goodin for more than 40 years and votes for him every time he runs because Burns, despite his preference in the presidential race, is in fact a Democrat.

“You’re looking at a Democrat right there,” Goodin said. “He’s a Democrat who voted for Donald Trump.”

“He’s also,” I said, “a Democrat who didn’t want to train a Muslim in his truck because he was afraid of getting blown up.”

“But you know,” Goodin said, “you let people live their lives, and you don’t question—I mean, what good would it have done?” He went on: “There’s no reason for confrontation—that’s the trouble with Congress now—because Delmis Burns and I, you wash away some of the odd things, what some people may consider odd that he would have said, what he said about the Muslim guy—the reason he said that is there’s no Muslims around our area. So he just don’t trust ’em. He don’t know who they are. … But Delmis Burns and I probably agree on 90 percent of everything we’d ever talk about. So why would I focus on the 10 percent that I don’t agree with him on?”

“Tell me how in the world Nancy Pelosi, or some of those folks in Congress,” Goodin said, “how would they even be able to sit there and talk with Delmis Burns? Do they even know that a guy like Delmis Burns exists? That’s why I say that the East Coast elitists have forgotten America. They’ve not been to America, they forgot America, they forgot about certain parts of America. Maybe they’ve done that intentionally. I hope they haven’t.”

Indiana-based rural strategist Melina Fox wishes the infighting would stop.

“[Goodin] is a rural Democrat who’s winning,” she told me, “so maybe they need to be listening to him.”

The lesson? “That the more moderate to conservative Democrat needs to come back in order for us to get the majority,” said Baron Hill, the former Democratic congressman from southern Indiana who lost in 2010. “The Democrats have got to do a better job of appealing to what was described awhile back as the ‘deplorables,’ if you’ll recall.”

I was a bit shocked that CNN's Anderson Cooper said the word "shithole" on the air multiple times with no bleeping. Moreso when the entire panel kept on repeating it.

I was less shocked that the person he was quoting said it.

It's no coincidence that he said it on the eve of the 8th anniversary of the Haitian earthquake.

Well, in times Trumpelstilsken is president and GOP has majority in congress and sentate I for sure don't want to visit the US for private reasons. Business trip? If I can't avoid it.
The last two times I was there 2x5 days there was always a shooting nearby. In Houston even 2 times. A family I know migrated last year from Austin Texas to Germany. They feel so much more secure here in Germany.

For migration, if Nazis ever take over again in Germany, my plan isn't to migrate to the US either unless some cultural change happens. Canada? Yes. this would be a real option.

Sorry to say that, but I have a very bad impression from my last US visits.

I think Trump just appealed to his base on his xenophobic stance on wanting to bring white people into this country. I recently sadden by another forum for taking down any post on Transgender, and wonder how many others are now taking back their site to be white people and straight people to be the only thing allow on the site and places. The only thing I can say is that I will challenge those that say or do things that are just bullying others out of fear of being different and not let Trump and his base take over the cause for making America great again.

Well, I doubt he was saying that to appeal to his base, since it was said in a non-public meeting with senators. It was not intended for public consumption - so it therefore had to be what he truly thinks.

Needless to say, it's created a rather significant mess. The government of Botswana summoned the US Ambassador to that nation to demand clarification on whether or not they were included in his "shitholes".

"The Botswana Government has also enquired from the US Government through the Ambassador, to clarify if Botswana is regarded as a “shithole” country,” the nation’s government said in a press release Friday. “The Botswana Government is wondering why President Trump, must use this descriptor and derogatory word, when talking about countries with whom the US has had cordial and mutually beneficial bilateral relations for so many years."

Our own ambassador to Panama, John Feeley, has resigned, saying "As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the President and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies. My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honor bound to resign. That time has come."

To top it all off, within 24 hours of that shithole comment, it was reported in the Wall Street Journal that a few weeks before the election, a Trump lawyer paid $130,000 in "hush money" to a porn star to keep her from bringing up a "tryst" she had with El Presidente back in 2006.

If a Democrat did either of those things - a blatantly racist insult targeting nations as a whole, or paying hush money to cover an affair - they'd be the biggest scandal of their administration.

But for Trump, it's just Thursday.......

This whole "MeToo" campaign is to not let this kind of behavior to stand, and I think that it also could be included to call out racist as well as Homophobic and any other kind of conversation that makes people feel uncomfortable to be different by color, race, gender, religion. I think "censuring" the president is a corrective step to just say that. May not do anything to change what we have, but at least to stand up and say this is not acceptably socially allow. It's easy to pretend that it didn't happen , or try to sweep it under the rug as not important. As long as it doesn't pertain to us, who cares right?

Just wanted to add that this doesn't mean to call out the other forum, but I meant that if you hear that kind of talk in public to speak up, otherwise we as being lose credibility in allowing things to go uncheck that could lead to hurting others. Janus Joplin says we should do whatever the hell we want as long as it doesn't hurt others. or something like that.

He is the leader of the Republican Party. They sit by and do nothing. They are equally complicit. This is the end point of the southern strategy, so they are directly benefiting from and encouraging all of this malfeasance. He is one of them, and they are one and the same. It's that simple.

Yes, he is directly to blame for foisting Sarah Palin upon us (along with Nichole Wallace and of course their boss at the time, Sen. John McCain), but what he said on Twitter yesterday is worth noting.

"The debasement of the office of the President of the United States of America is a tragedy.  Trump has stained our national honor with his overt and unabashed racism. The people defending him on TV look like fools. The Trump faction in America accounts for between 32-36 percent of voters. The overwhelming majority of our fellow citizens are aghast at the racism, malevolence, chaos and corruption of this administration.

November 2018 will present an opportunity to deliver a massive Repudiation of Trumpism. Fire is part of the natural life cycle of the forest. It destroys the forest but also purifies and renews it so that the cycle of life can begin again. So it must be for the Trump-Republican party.  Only through repudiation and defeat can it be renewed.

The corrupted, rotten and complicit Republican majority that is abetting this Presidents damage to our institutions, national security and domestic tranquility must face electoral anhialation. [sic]  A massive coalition of Democrats, independent and appalled Republicans must come together to deliver a message to the world that the American people will defend our Republic and the inheritance bequeathed to us by previous generations.

A righteous anger is building in this country and it must be channeled in to the 2018 elections. Enough.  Defeat them all."

It's not merely what Trump is saying and doing, what he's NOT doing is damaging the country, too.

There are over 600 presidentially appointed positions in the federal government that require Congressional approval. One year into his term, OVER ONE THIRD of them don't even have a nominee.

And these aren't make-work positions, either. Among the vacancies are:

Ambassadors to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Australia, South Korea, and dozens of other countries
Undersecretary for Food Safety, Dept. of Agriculture
Deputy Secretary, Dept. of Commerce
Director, Census Bureau *
Director, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
Director, US Marshals Service
Director of the National Counterterrorism Center
Inspectors General for six cabinet-level departments

* This one is really important, since preparations for the 2020 Census need to be underway yesterday in order for everything to be running smoothly when the actual census is taken. The thing required by the Constitution, since it determines the apportionment of Congressional seats....

Most of his effort is to replace federal judges with young christian educated lawyers into the lower federal court. The damages that Trump is doing will last a long time.

From Der Speigel, Germany's leading news magazine:

"Fire and Fury" is the title of the new exposé of Donald Trump's first year in the White House. The tome has only been out for a few days, and yet it has already established itself as one of the books of the year. Even we journalists find ourselves describing the book's contents as "indescribable" and "unfathomable." Can the world's most powerful man really be dumb, senile and addicted to television as the book claims? He spends his early evenings watching three televisions in his bedroom? Eating a cheeseburger and tweeting all the while? An entire White House teetering between hysteria and chaos? And yet, it's still the journalist's job to describe the indescribable and fathom the unfathomable.

Our latest cover story explains how "Fire and Fury" came to be and whether, and the extent to which, it approaches the truth. Most importantly, however, it delves into the consequences for an America and a world that have been confronted with a nuclear-armed fool who is likely to remain in office for some time to come, who is neither mentally nor psychologically suited for the job - apparently also not physically, either, given how late he starts the working day and how early he ends it. That, unfortunately, is precisely the point: Humanity as a whole is being set back just because of one single person. The achievements of decades - the fight against a climate disaster, against the nuclear threat, for equality between men and women, between blacks and whites and so on and so on. Where is the world supposed to start again if it manages to survive Donald Trump?

- Suzanne Beyer, Deputy Editor-in-Chief

(empahses mine)

The cover text translates as "The Age of Fire and Fury"

So El Presidente's had his physical, and insisted that the doctor give him a basic competency test.

As to the first, the announced results for his height and weight (6'3", 239 lbs.) put him in good "company":

Tim Tebow: 6'3", 245 lbs.
Tom Brady: 6'4", 230 lbs.
Mike Trout: 6'2", 235 lbs.
Albert Pujols: 6'3", 240 lbs.

I know, hard to believe, isn't it.

As far as his cognitive skills, you can readily look up the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Despite its simplicity, it really does measure a lot of things and is a very good test for things like Alzheimers. That Trump did well enough on it suggests two things about his true mental state:

1. He's stupid.
2. He just doesn't give a shit about the job.

I'm more inclined towards the latter viewpoint, especially after what we've read in "Fire and Fury". He sits around most of the day in "executive time", can't be bothered with even simple briefings, seems to agree with the last person he spoke with, etc.

This really isn't the sort of person you want in the job, is it. Since problems can come out of nowhere, we need a president who is actively engaged in what is going on in the country and the world.

And the lack of leadership in Congress isn't helping.
