My main reason to watch ST:TNG
I think this is one of those cases where knowing too much ruins the effect. The first time I remember seeing Sirtis was on a BBC Sherlock Holmes episode from 1987. She looked fantastic in the period costume and played a Greek character, which worked well with her look. Her very next project was STNG.
Today we know all sorts of trivia about the series and have hundreds of anecdotes from the actors themselves regarding the behind-the-scenes happenings. If you know some of the details and source material for her character, what we end up seeing on screen is a heavily adjusted look which never felt comfortable for the actor. (until possibly the last year or so of the show) It also did not help that she had the least acting experience of the main cast (even at age 32) and was trying to literally "fit" into the role.
When she first did screen tests in one of her possible costumes it was just days after being signed on. Sirtis has talked about how difficult it was for her to learn her material, envision the character, work with an ever-changing wardrobe, and still hit her mark on set. (There are a few times in the first episodes where you can see her checking her pre-marked spots).
Her look was in a constant tug of war and her character remained underdeveloped (pun intended). I feel she did well given all the points she was trying to hit.
