Since the big hack/new forum software/increased security, it's no longer possible to do that. If you must, you should contact
customercare@bearchive.com
(Matt and Gabe) and ask them. Presumably, there'll be some sort of ID verification involved.
Sorry it's not as easy as it used to be, but it seems that led to security problems... we've all got to live with the consequences.

The account I used to sign up with is now dead, too. I don't mind in the least, so long as I don't someday get banned or excluded for it.

So long as your alter ego doesn't break any rules, you should be okay.

I have tried 2 different days emailing
customercare@bearchive.com
asking to change my email address. Yet I don't get any replies and the change never happens. Am I doing something wrong? I am emailing them from the account they currently have on file. Would like to get it done so I can stop using the old email address.

No, you're not doing anything wrong other than being a bit impatient... two days isn't much. If you're a paysite member then you should say so (in caps) in your emails to customer care... that might get your message attended to faster (bear in mind that customercare helps users of free forum accounts on an *as-time-allows* basis... free forum users aren't technically customers and have paid nothing towards customercare resource costs: the customercare guys are employees, not volunteers).
If for some reason you must stop using your current em addy asap, you have a couple of options. To begin with, the BEA doesn't generally send any email to users on its own behalf, so pretty much ANY/ALL EMs that you're receiving from it are messages you've ASKED to be sent such as notifications. If you have some notifications set up in your control panel (i.e.: you ask the site to email you when someone replies to one of your posts or send you a PM) you could simply turn those off and you'll not receive any EMs at all: problem solved. If you feel you MUST receive such EMs BUT want to use a new EM addy AND can't wait however long it takes for customercare to respond to you, then your last remaining option is to simply create a new user/free forum account WITH the new/desired EM addy and stop using your old one altogether (with notifications turned off on the old one of course).
We know that this is far from ideal, but following the big hack last year, new software/security measures were deemed necessary and this change (about uneditable EM addys) is among them.
