Interesting. I would have put in 1862 the Battle of Antietam in Maryland as the single bloodiest day in American history.

An interesting if odd selection.  If I'm not mistaken, 1912 saw the admission not only of New Mexico but Arizona as well, meaning that America became at last a solidly contiguous block from sea to shining sea.  The 48-star flag saw us through the Roaring Twenties, Hollywood's greatest year 1939, World War II, and most of the Fifties.

It's at moments like these that I think I can begin to appreciate the arch-conservative attitude, which seems to be "The world is a time machine and I want to get off!" :P

V to Dee below: eh, James Cameron will be reminding us enough himself with his 3D reissue. :P

V to MD below: good one!  Bicentennial recollections will really become spectacular come 2014.

Americans don't talk about that, MDF, 'cuz we got our butts kicked. The only battle we won was fought two weeks after we surrendered.

Obviously you forgot our victory in Baltimore ( which inspired " The Star spangled banner " ) and it's true we did not do well but we kept our independence which was an incredible outcome considering the disparity in size and economy between the USA and Imperial Britain of the time. The treaty of Ghuent was not a surrender but simply a instrument to return to what it was before. A surrender would have involved the loss of land at minimum if practise of the time would have been followed. The war is hardly discussed or remembered in Britain because they were contending with their perennial enemy France, in the guise of Napoleon, so we were at most a silly distraction to them. The war was probably most important to present day Canada because they repulsed the constant invasions from the USA which were attempted and began planting the seed of eventual Canadian independence. So an event of absolutely little or no significance to the european empires is actually quite momentous to north american history.

I left out the Civil War and the War of 1812 as being too obvious to note; and the Titanic as being overrated and overdone.

1965: the NY Jets sign up Joe Namath

I remember my dad saying how could any football player get so much money ( $ 400,000 a year !  :o ). It  was unconsionable. Outrageous ! And unlike Unitas or Starr, he hasn't even won a freaking championship ! What are they thinking ! Of course, punters get at least that much now.  ::) Zook, don't wish to be a party pooper, but the way I see this thread developing, the year must fall on the even years as related to 2012. In other words, 10, 20 30, and so on and so forth years. Since 1965 is 47 years from 2012, it doesn't count. Of course, rtpoe may decide it doesn't really matter anyways. Now, in 1962, the Green Bay Packers win the first of 5 NFL championships during the 1960s.
