I went to update a URL on my “User:Naken” page on the Addventure Wiki, and discovered that there are now blocks on putting URLs on pages, and seemingly on changing them, too.

Any chance I can be allowed to do this? Even if you want to stick a CAPTCHA on edits that add/change URLs, I can live with that.

Thanks.

The block on adding/changing URLs was introduced because the wiki was becoming overwhelmed by spam which had to be deleted. It was introduced by Prophet Tenebrae and MarkT without either Adama or myself being consulted, which pissed us off a little given that we had been appointed to oversee the wiki. A work-around, possibly involving a template, was supposed to be going to be implemented, but it has never happened. Without it, the wiki is hamstrung.

See Adama's talk page there for more info.

It's actually worse than mentioned, not only can you not add or edit urls, you also can't edit any piece of text that includes a url, even if you aren't changing the url.

The only work-around I've found is to use the "edit" buttons lower on the pages.  You can make changes to sections that don't include links.  There are a number of things that on pages related to my stuff (like links to the first appearance of a character that lead to the old site), and the BE links page (which doesn't have the new Melon Stand address, and a few sites need to be added) that are impossible to change.

So, no resolution of this, then.

It's all in Prophet Tenebrae's hands... I've sent him a note to see if the restriction can be lifted, we'll see if he responds.

Well, I've done the sensible thing and allowed the far more technically diligent Adama the keys, so he can sort things out.

He and JH are both ridiculously dedicated, so they've both got the power to sort things out. Or should do soon.

Well, whether he is indeed "ridiculously" dedicated or not, I happen to know that JH_ is currently on a well deserved holiday and not likely to pop back in here till the 5th, so I guess it's up to Lorne.

Adama told me that, I'm afraid that I wasn't expecting it to all happen instantly.

Glacial progress is what should be expected. Then if things go faster, it's all for the best.

Okay folks, I've taken the template idea that MarkT (all hail the original BEA Addventure and Stories admin!) came up with, and implemented it on the Wiki.  Seems to work fine.

Here's how you use it --

Normally, you would create an external link to for example, Google, by putting the URL and link text like this:

Code:
[http://www.google.com Google Main Page]

That sort of thing is still going to be blocked by the spammer filter.  The workaround involves two new templates, URL and URLSecure.  Both templates take two arguments, the URL and the link text.  For example:

Code:
{{URL|www.google.com|Google Main Page}}

URLSecure is the same, but is meant for https (secure http) URLs.

So, to turn an existing external link into a template link,
  • replace the starting and ending square brackets with double curly braces
  • remove the http:// (or https://)
  • insert "URL" or "URLSecure" before the address
  • put a pipe sign between "URL"/"URLSecure" and the address
  • put a pipe sign between the address and the link text

CAVEAT: If there are other external links in the section or page you are editing, you have to convert ALL of them to use the templates, otherwise it still won't let you save.  If your page is divided into sections then you can save some effort by just editing the specific section you want to modify, as Lightfoot suggested above.

Let me know if there are problems....

And if you don't like the idea of using the templates, for quick fixes there's still the previous workaround of contacting an admin (Ten, JH, or me) and asking them to make the change for you.   I don't want to encourage that though, and it doesn't mean we're going to do all your link-to-template conversions for you...

Thanks. I just fixed up every URL on my User page, and it worked.

That seems like it should work... except how would we remove links?  Would we alter them in this way first, then then completely remove them in a second edit?

No, just remove the link and save.  However, any other links in that section that you wanted to keep would have to be altered this way.

I'm just back from my vacation. My thanks to Adama, Prophet and MarkT for their roles in implementing this.
