BUG REPORT THREAD for 12/29/2015 FORUM SOFTWARE UPGRADE
« on: December 28, 2015, 07:50:47 AM »
As far as we currently know, the admins will be installing new forum software on Tuesday, December 29th. The forum will be out of service for an undetermined amount of time that day until the installation can be completed.

During the outage, you can stay in touch with us at www.twitter.com/@plzbearwithus. We will post status updates there if/when they are available. This twitter feed is safe-for-work, and will contain no traceable references to BEArchive.

After the forum is brought back into service, there will inevitably be bugs and misconfigurations. Please report any problems you encounter here in this thread. Here are some guidelines for bug reporting...

Please include the following information:
  • URL of the page where the bug occurred
  • Action that triggered the bug
  • The INCORRECT functionality of the bug
  • The CORRECT functionality you expected
  • Is the bug repeatable? Persistently or intermittently?

Before posting, please read the earlier messages in the thread to make sure you're not reporting a bug somebody else already reported.

Please be as descriptive as necessary to clearly communicate the location and nature of the problem to the engineers. You may include screen-caps if they'll help you describe a problem. The 1-1-1 rule will not apply to screen-caps in bug reports posted in this thread; use as many as you need to illustrate the bug you're reporting.

If you're reporting a complex bug and you need to use multiple messages to post multiple screen-caps of it, give the bug an unique name (like "Thunderbird", or "Asparagus", or "Waldo") (be creative!) and mention that name in each message.

Thanks!
the moderators

Note: the admins tell us that you'll need to create new passwords for your user accounts after the upgrade. You should see a popup window explaining the process to you. You will presumably need your regular username and old password to create the new login data.

Good luck, everybody. We hope to see you on the other side!

Hopefully not. Postcount data should be transplanted along with the user database. We'll see, though.

Well, I put solvegas as my member name and I got a note when I logged back in that that account does not exist and I can't figure a way to get it back. I guess I'm sol001 like they say I am. Every time they " update " something shit gets fucked up.  :( :'( >:(

Maybe you didn't read the text in the yellow box when logging in? You need to re-validate your user account by clicking Forgot Password and following the instructions.

^ I did and that is what is frustrating. I looked at the member list and noticed solvegas has at the end a black rectangle that I did not see anybody else on the list. I have no idea if the black rectangle means anything.  ???

The black rectangle is a progress bar showing how much you've posted compared to other users on that page of the member list. The more you've posted, the wider it gets.

We've clarified the login window since you tried it. If you clicked Forgot password? in the login window (which you should have done) and then followed the instructions, the software should have sent you an email containing a link you could click to revive your solvegas user account.

If you didn't receive the email, it's probably because the email address we have on file for you is ancient and you don't use it anymore. If that's the case, submit a trouble ticket at https://botcomics.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new, and they'll revive your solvegas account.

Mr. Gonzo
Poor Nimrod can not log into the forum.
He is on Windows 10 and that might be
a problem. I am still on Window 7 and
when I went through the steps to get
an older account active like you show it
worked fine. Nim did the same thing but
never got the verification e-mail. Mine
worked in seconds.  :) :)

Nim started to fill out the service ticket
on the BotComic site but he just said
that it does not have the selection for
a Window 10 operating system in their
report form. Could it be that this is a
Windows 10 issue? It is a required field
so he can only proceed with the ticket
if he lies about what OS he has.  :o

I like the new look of the forum. Any
assistance you can muster would be
so nice. Nim thinks it is looking better
also. Bunny Hugs all around!  ;D

Hi Kith,

Even if there's no choice for Windows 10 in the pull-down menu of the support request form, it doesn't mean the problem Nim's experiencing is Win 10-related. More likely is that the forum sent the re-activation email to the email addy he had on file... but maybe no longer uses or didn't check the right account?

That's a very common problem for users who created their forum accounts a while ago and have maybe changed their email addys since that time. Perhaps he can check the email he used when he registered, since that's probably where the reactivation message from the forum is sitting atm.

Otherwise, have him go ahead with the support ticket and just choose Win7 from the pull-down and mention in the text body to let them know he's using Win 10. But again: I suspect he's not checking the right email addy.

PS: I'm sending you a PM Kith containing the email addy that Nim has on file with the forum. That is the account he should check the inbox of. If he can no longer access that account, then he should proceed with the trouble ticket or just create a new account. Thanks. -Pal

Hi Kithara,
In this situation, Nimrod's operating system is irrelevant. If he fills out a trouble ticket, all they're going to do is make sure his login-name and password match the records, activate his account, and let him know at the email address he provides. I'm not sure how fast that will happen (we're testing it now), but it shouldn't be unreasonably long. –gonZo

Requested new password.  Got it, and logged in.  Yay! All worked.

I know you will be dealing with others who have had real technical issues, so no rush...

BUT...

Will there be "adjustments" to the Forum design?  This color scheme is hideous, and makes reading difficult (little contrast and such deep color behind text).  Yes?  Yes?  Pleeeease?    :)

Good work on the upgrade!

I agree the color scheme is awful... way too bright and low contrast... and that's not even considering all the wasted space that causes one or two short posts to fill up a full HD display... SOOO much more scrolling around now needed to see all the replies since last visit. :( I've expressed this issue to admins more than once already, but by all means, do post such concerns here, since we'll direct them here to see user opinions.

Attached is a screencap of my display showing this thread (at 100% browser zoom w/medium text default in Chrome) on my 1920x1080 display... as you can see, my brief post: only a few sentences and your even briefer quoted post inside... fills up the whole screen! And that's before I attached an image... the stamp for which will take up half again more space. :(

Another m1nor issue: after posting to a thread, when the screen refreshes, sometimes you are returned to the newly updated thread (the correct behavior) but sometimes, you are returned instead to the list of all threads in that forum (incorrect behavior). I can't determine any reason why one happens vs. the other sometimes.

Glad the forums are back, and also glad that you're looking into the layout issues. Thank you, and I hope that the upgrade didn't put too much of a crimp into your New Year's festivities.

Set Profile > Look and Layout > Return to topics after posting by default to TRUE

Pal says: thanks gonZo! Odd that it did return me to the post sometimes even when the box was unchecked.
