On April 7, 1964, IBM launched their System/360 mainframe computer system, which pretty much kicked off the information technology industry as we know it.
Gene Amdahl's brainchild had 8 million characters of core storage, up to 1 billion characters of random access memory, could be rented for $2,700/month (basic configuration) or $115,000/month (totally tricked-out multisystem configuration), or could be purchased outright for $133,000 (basic configuration) or $5,500,000 (tricked-out).
