General Help Request
« on: April 23, 2024, 09:30:07 PM »
Might as well ask, since we've got a decent amount of computer knowledge running around here.

It takes f*ing FOREVER for my computer to not just boot up, but get to the point where I can actually do anything with it.

I've already trimmed away as much of the bloatware as I can identify, and have only four Firefox extensions, so I have reason to believe I'm running a pretty lean machine. Yet it STILL takes something like 5-10 MINUTES after I press the "On" button before I'm fully "up and running".

I'm watching Task Manager during all of this, and I see as many as 100 background processes active. They can't ALL be important, can they? I would LOVE to be able to to a "dump" of that list of processes (without having to do screen captures if at all possible) so I can do a bit of research and see what's what with all of them.

Any ideas?

For the record, I'm running a Dell Inspiron (purchased in Nov. 2018) with Firefox 125.0.2 (64-bit):

Processor   Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz   2.81 GHz
Installed RAM   8.00 GB (7.82 GB usable)
System type   64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch   No pen or touch input is available for this display

Edition   Windows 10 Home
Version   22H2
Installed on   ‎10/‎2/‎2020
OS build   19045.4291
Experience   Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19056.1000.0

what do you have in the startup list and what kind of harddrive or flash drive are you running?

The things enabled at startup (according to Task Manager) are

Java Update scheduler

TurboPC EX2 File Copy Resident Program
TurboPC EX Notify Program
(these are things that came with the built-in software that runs my external backup drive)

Delayed Launcher (Intel)
Classic Start Menu (an appearance tweak)
Realtek HD Audio Universal Service
Windows Security notification icon

The hard drive is a 1TB SATA (if I'm reading all this correctly) that's only about half filled.

I probably should spend a day doing all the optimization and defragging stuff that I haven't done in months, right?
