Being a lurker not so long ago myself, I sometimes wondered, why some words were seemingly misspelled e.g. substituting an "i" by the cipher "1".
But there are others, which I suspected being some kind of cryptography, starting with 2 asterisks, followed by a two digit number and ending with two more asterisks.
Sometimes the meaning of these secret codes could be derived out of the context, but often I was let alone guessing which meaning was hidden behind the code.
The answer is easy: besides the banned words as listed in the "Rules" ('unsayable') there are apparently a lot more which just are convertet into the **nn** code by the text editor used for posting.
Here are some codes I found out myself and the workarounds, as given below:
**29** = c_e_l_e_b_r_i_t_y ( shortest: celebr1ty )
**82** = s_l_e_e_p ( shortest: sl3ep )
Conlusion: changing one letter ( e.g. the letter "i" by "1" or the letter "e" by the figure "3" ) is sufficient to prevent the text editor coding these, as I would call them 'strictly forbidden' words.
So I'm inviting all BEA-experts to lift this secret further.
Needless to say, that the 'unsayable' words as listed in the Rules will be converted.
But of course, we have agreed to obey these rules when registering - and will ;)

When I started lurking here at the BEA in 2001, there was no censorship of words per se and when I officially became a member in 2003, for a while there wasn't much problem but then it was decided by management to get rid of some words because of complaints by some members of the improper use of them and they have been censored. This was about 20 years ago if I remember correctly. ???

No logic to many of the censored words and no one has even attempted to justify them.

I think many people just don't want to deal with it. :P

Thanks, salem, for moving to a more appropriate topic site.
When I started this thread, I was unfortunately on the 'General Discussion'-site and when editing (using a tablet without keyboard), I didn't want to lose the typed in text and therefore I've started this thread by pressing the 'post' button.
And as you know, as a (unprivileged) user, I can't remove a thread if once started - at least I didn't know how. A typical newbie mistake. Sorry!
From the posts of other long-term members I got informed however, that already two further threads concerning this topic exist:

Maybe you could merge these? Only if the original posters agree, of course.

^ As far as I know, Kids/Kid is no longer censored. :)
-
right, Sol, that is exactly what I've found out and said!
And as you can see above, I've adapted my text accordingly.
But since "k1ds" is not removed from the RULES, I will not use this word without transcription ;) either.

Another set of (strictly) forbidden (censored) words:
**14** r@pe
**24** fac3book
**69** k1dnap
**60** su ffocation
**70** k1dn@pp3d
**82** sl33p
**83** sl33ping
**86** unwil!ing
**92** dr unk
**94** dr1nk1ng
**97** c0ma
**107** is p00p

Frankly, I just find the whole censored words rules idiotic at best. When I first started lurking here in 2001 and then joined in 2003, there were no censored words. :P

Completely right, Sol!
But as the good old Roman (Latin) proverb goes:
tempora mutantur, et nos in illis.

That's Greek to me. (An old fashioned term that used to be used when you didn't understand right away. ;D)

I fail to see why any of those words is censored ! Only one is remotely 'sensitive'..... Who thought it was a good idea to censor everyday words such as these ?? :(
