Title: What do you do for a living?
Post by: Hark on June 29, 2026, 07:46:36 PM
I wanted to talk about work.  To start off, I'm sorry if there's already a 'work-related' thread, but the word 'work' is all over the place.

I work for a family owned & operated small business that supplies, rents and maintains laundry machines for low-rent apartments, where residents have to go down the hall or to the basement to do their laundry.  I collect the money from the machines, hours are 8am-4:30pm, at $39.75/hr., and no nights or weekends.

A route usually takes me about 6 hrs. or less, with some admin paperwork at the end of the day.  We have accounts that occasionally get upgraded to credit, or removed entirely, so the routes get a little shorter.  I took the initiative to combine some routes into others, but the days don't get so long that they justify being out too late.  Our vehicles are speed tracked, so I try not to exceed 5 over the limit.  I've twisted my right ankle a few times, and have plantar fasciitis in my left.  I wear braces on both feet, so running isn't practical without causing pain.

My co-worker, called M, gets back after 4:30 almost every day, doesn't do any admins, has no intention to improve, show curiosity, nor initiative to do better, and seems to get away with doing the absolute bare minimum.  I've discussed this with our boss, called J, but was 'reminded' that M doesn't work for me.  I just got back from a 2 week long stay-cation (vacation at home), with a fair amount of office work waiting for me.  Everyone knew I was gone, so nothing missed was critical.

I've never known anyone work so hard to do so little.  I'm the only one working the office, so I asked J if he's ok with me doing all of the office work, and M not.  The work disparity is wide enough to drive a truck between.  I asked J if M is the standard, and I'm exceeding it, is this acceptable?  If I'm the standard, and M is substandard, so why is it allowed?  J has said he likes how I work, and I'm appreciated for it.

What do you guys think?  I know I'm leaving a few details out, and probably added unnecessary details.  I just need to get this off my chest.  I really like my job.  Good hours, great pay, work at my own pace, and with this economy, I'm probably in the rare category.  Resigning and looking for another job isn't an option.

Thanks for reading.

I am an Office Assistant in the Civil Unit of my county's Sheriff's Department.

My major task is entering civil judgments that we've been given to collect. My secondary task is entering payments that we've received for those debts. Third task is preparing the daily bank deposit.

It's a nice civil service union job, so the hours are regular and the pay and benefits are good. I even get to park in the building complex garage!

We're always understaffed - and a co-worker who shows up late and spends a lot of time doing personal stuff on the phone doesn't help matters. Two other co-workers constantly bicker like and old married couple.

I keep my head down, don't make a fuss - and if I can hold out for 3 1/2 more years, I'll hit the '20 year' mark and can retire with all the full benefits.

I work at a major freight shipping company.  I'm the senior freight handler at my location.  I work morning shift, starting at 6 am.  We have 6 guys on night shift, and they are the worst night shift we've ever had.  They're very slow in unloading trailers, so even though we're running very light due to the economic downturn, I often have to help finish up their work.  None of them will work overtime, so because I'm often backed up on my own work because I've been doing some of theirs, I do overtime quite often.  Also, they've got terrible attendance, so that's another reason I have to do some of their work.  They make a lot of mistakes, and I'm the one who catches and fixes them.  Thank god the two guys who come in at 9:30 am are dependable.

I'm 65 now, and can't afford to retire yet, so I'm going on until I'm 70.  At least, my benefits and company support is good.

MOST ANNOYING PEOPLE I HAVE TO DEAL WITH:
In no particular order.

1. "I need to keep track of my payments. I'd like to go over each and every single payment I've made over the last four months....."

2a. "Why am I still being garnished? I thought this was paid off!" (Because your payroll office actually mails us a physical check, and we haven't received that last one yet.)

2b. "Why am I being garnished?" (Checks file, they've had money taken out of their check for OVER A YEAR, and will have it paid off in another month - yes, that does happen)

3. "I need to have this summons served; I've tried everything and you're my last chance. The court date is in five days...." (NOTE: In almost every case, we are required by state law to complete service no less than EIGHT days before the court date)

4. Phone Call #1: "I'm going to send you a fax." Call #2, two minutes later: "I just sent the fax." Call 3, two more minutes later: "Did you get the fax?"
