I happened to be shopping for a little piece of furniture the other day, and realized that I had become just a bit more of an adult.
I needed something with shelves and open sides on it, something about three feet high and not too wide. A bookcase? A shelving unit? Some sort of modular plastic thing? No. I was looking for an étagère. Complete with accent marks.
I realized then that I had grown up just a bit more. I was taking interior decorating seriously.
With that in mind, I came up with a few other signs that you are becoming An Adult.
1. Instead of second-hand items, you buy brand new furniture. And it's made of wood, not plastic.
2. Ordering a drink like "Sex on the Beach" at a bar isn't funny anymore.
3. A three-day weekend means plenty of time to do housework.
Any others?
-
You go to the matinee at the movies because it's cheaper.
-
You smell like Bengay.
-
You can show your girlfriend where you live.
-
You dread the notion of going to a bar, because:
a) drinks are hella expensive,
b) the music passed the 'enjoyable' threshold of loudness long ago; you don't fancy the thought of having to scream so you basically just smile and nod and wink at your significant other, hoping to form some sort of cogent 'conversation' in the process
c) you step outside to get a break from the loud music and lack of ventilation, only to get socked in the lungs by someone's secondhand smoke, despite the fact that you're outdoors
d) your ears continue to feel semi-deaf, and you don't like feeling like you've just accelerated the premature demise of your hearing
e) staying up past midnight means you had better have had a Really Good **82** the night before, otherwise you'll just be in a pissy mood until you get home
-
You go to the mall to 'people watch'.
You can't start your day until you've had a good BM.

We buy the reverse-osmosis filtered water from Tom Thumb or Whole Foods. I've noticed a number of times over the past year when I'll have a glass of that water and think to myself, "Wow, this water tastes awesome!" and just focus on that.

You no longer want to spend money to turn your car audio system into a bitchin' sound system. If you have a nice one from years ago, you rarely crank it up. If you do turn it up, it's rarely up for more than 10-20 seconds.

when gay jokes stop being amusing.
I don't know how much longer me and my friends can keep repeating the same jokes we've been using for the last 5 years and still get at least one of us to chuckle like a retard.
-
bwaaaahhh!
Showing an interest in interior decorating does not make you mature, it makes you gay. Of course, mofoapoo does not find that amusing becuase?
There's only one thing that makes people mature, and that's smoking. The smooth taste of tobacco going down your throat gives you the sense of calm that only comes with age and maturity. A mouth full of smoke will show the ladies that you are a real man. The kind of man that takes pride in his appearance, the kind of man with money to burn and a nice sports car. A sophisticated guy who's probably from Europe, or at least has been there. A real James Bond/Joe Camel. After bedding a woman, a real mature man reaches for a cigarette.

Ladies like to smoke too, but they generally use holders. For the ladies, smoking shows that you are mature enough to handle a man that smokes.
-
Psshaw... a real man doesn't smoke Camel Lights.
-
bwaaahhh!
Are you insinuating that Smooth Joe Camel is
a. not real
b. not a man
c. both a and b
because that cigarette in his mouth, and his huge biceps tell me otherwise.
Also, I forgot to add the legal disclaimer: "The Surgeon General, Dr. Sanjay Gupta warns that smoking cigarettes may lead to increased awesomeness, and higher sex appeal."
-
You know when you're getting mature when all the shinies in the room aren't quite as interesting
-
When you start fragging people in Call of Duty 4 by actually shooting them then instead of using your knife, grenades, the n00b tube, martyrdom etc...

Don't get me wrong, Joe Camel is undoubtedly cool, and he's smooth with the ladies. But look at the Marlboro man! He's 100% blood, grit and testosterone. Even after a stressful visit to his oncologist, the Marlboro man is ready to jump on his horse, light up a red, and rustle some cattle. He's a man's man.

Agreed.

"I just can't drink the way I used to," replaces, "I'm never going to drink that much again."
-
When you acknowledge rock groups like Guns N' Roses and Metallica as "classic."
-
When you, an affirmed non-smoker, take up smoking the occasional cigar. You know, for special occasions.
When you start sentences with "20 years ago" (or 30, 40, etc).
When you grumble about the way some younger folks wear their hair/hats/pants, then have that "oh no I've become old" moment.
When putting on your fave slippers really can be the highlight of your day.
-
When you decide that your 17" TV and standard DVD player a good enough and you give all the money that you would have spent on a 40" HDTV and Blu-ray player to the foundation to find a cure for malaria.
-
bwaaaahhh!
What if I told you that I wasn't getting older ... but I was getting younger than everybody else?
-
6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.

When you see a picture of a rotary dial phone and actually have fond memories of the non-hands-free, non-cordless, error-prone dialing, noisy-long-distance experience.
(As opposed to the hands-free, cordless, dropped-call experience. And yet, 30 years from now, someone will look fondly back on that experience.

I am noticing the effect of decades of hormones in factory meat on teeenagers. When I went to school girls were barely developed, maybe one or two had nice c-cups, I doublechecked my year book just in case my memory was dim.
These days they have all sprouted at least firm b-cups and a large portion have made it up to d's and a few beyond.
It's not like I am a ped stalker, but damn I have to ride the bus and the way these chicks dress their illegal, nubile jubblies are practically smacking me in the face!!!
Wow now I really feel old!!!
-
Bob, on a related note is the effect where you're casually looking around while strolling (eg, at the mall), notice some outstanding curves well beyond D-cup, are initially smitten, look up a bit, then as soon as your subconscious registers the likely age of the owner, you just want to scrub your brain with a power-sander.

On a related note, there's the age-old fantasy of being with an 18 yr old. That must be a fantasy for 20- and 30-somethings, because at some point I raised that bar to no less than 21, with a push to make that bar no less than 25. I don't know whether that's self-preservation, or whether that's got more to do with the more youthful mannerisms which just seem irritating now. Or maybe something to do with world experience, probability of intelligent conversation, or what.
Not that I fantasize about getting with much older women.
Although mind you, if Raquel Welch were to come a-knocking, I can't say that I'd snub her.
....
On another tangent, it's easier to have an appreciation for the lessons my parents shared with me when I was younger. Quite of few of those 'Aha!' moments.
-
Yeah, I dig, once I get over the initial shock, little girls, no matter how busty, do nothing for me these days. I'm way too old.
-
I look at supercars these days and just think how much they'd cost to buy and run, not how neat it would be to drive one, or how cool I'd be to girls.

That's funny, and reminds me of a friend when we were both in our late 20s. He spent the night with a 19-year-old; the next day he told me that was the last time, because not only did he have to seduce her, but the next morning they didn't have anything to talk about.

You insert ear protection when going to concerts.
-
Like your parents 30-40 years ago you think todays music is way too loud and the lyrics make no sense. After all, the music you grew up on was always the best and todays suck. Bill Cosby was right, we've become our parents !

You make sensible shopping choices, even when looking for the mundane. Years ago, "any old bar of soap" would do, but today, you have it down to a science (or at least have convinced yourself that you have). You find "pump soap" to be a kitchen/bathroom essential, and find it baffling how you made do with a regular bar of soap years ago.
Even car shopping, you've become quite a bit more pragmatic over the years. You're driven less by the rush of 'new' and 'whoa', and more by what Consumer Reports says about reliability, maintainability, customer satisfaction and insurance costs.

I have a subscription to CR, and have made my last four major purchases based upon their recommendations.

One night at a party, while fairly intoxicated I declared that I was now an adult because I had a cooler that had my last name on it in permanent marker. Did I mention I was **92**?

That's funny. I figured I was an adult when I had a jacket that DIDN'T have my name in it.

The day when I realized that my father was not the stupidest man on the face of the planet and most likely, could be one of the wisest ones.

When people start saying "You're not THAT young."
When you realize that your freshman year in high school, which seems like yesterday, is really a decade or more ago.
When you also realize that you can't go back to being under 18.
When you've lived under at least 5 different Presidential administrations.

When some snotty teenager ask you at the movie house if you want a senior citizen discount and you are only 52 ..... hell yea, I'll save me some bucks !!

Hey, there's a difference between being mature and being old.
Maturity is asking yourself why you absolutely have to get a complete set of (whatever), and answering, "Oh, that's right, it's an investment!"
Maturity is actually worrying about investments...

I figured you were gonna write something about our race not being mature at all as your race of sentient machines has been around for eons longer

That's happened to you, too? Yeah, I was about 45 when some snotty 18-year-old showed me the "senior menu". Now I offer to pay extra if they will make me 25 again.
-
20-25 years old ? It really doesn't seem to be so long ago. Time simply seems to go so much faster.
One thing I find peculiar in my case is that sometimes I forget something quite recent but things that happened long ago are crystal clear. Can be disconcerting at times.
-
I don't know if this is a sign of maturity or not. But I remember when I was young thinking that at least when I got older I'd feel older and more mature, make less stupid mistakes, etc. And I suppose experience lets me avoid things I would have run into when I was younger, but I don't FEEL any more mature. I just feel like me.
I still think stuff that after a second's thought makes me want to hit myself. Do we ever feel grown up, or is it just an illusion? And am I the only one who feels this way?
-
When I was 18-25, I would have enjoyed having excessive horsepower to make my tires scream and smoke.
Now I'm quite content to very stealthily keep as much traction as possible and accelerate swiftly and surely. Don't like spending money on replacing rubber, do like avoiding attracting attention of any sort.
-
The key sign of maturity is when budgeting your money becomes supremely important.
This happened to me in 2004, and I've never looked back.
Apparently, none of our politicians appear to be mature in any fashion other than age...

Before going out for a few drinks, I joked to a buddy, "are we going to go out and party like it's 1999?"

You need to get a new item of clothing, and because your wardrobe is so complete and perfectly coordinated, you buy something in the exact color and basic style of what it's going to replace.

Some things seemed so important when you are young but due to the passage of time, they don't matter so much anymore. ;) :)
