OK, here's another bit of pointlessness.
Minimize all windows that you may have open on your computer. Make a screen cap of your desktop. Post it here as an attachment. Don't link to it in the body of the message - let's be nice to the non-broadband people out there and keep the displayed images to a minimum.
Mine is attached. I have a wallpaper randomizer that changes my wallpaper every so often by choosing randomly from a list. The blob thing in the middle is Maeka (www.maeka.com), who cavorts on my desktop.
rtpoe
p.s. If you have a graphics program that lets you display image at "full screen" (the image only, and none of the toolbars etc.), then you can play with people's brains by opening a full screen image of their desktop and seeing how long it takes them to figure out why nothing seems to work...
-
That won't work with Windows users, they'll just assume it's a crash and reboot...
-
OK, this shows you just how obsessed I am with this woman.
-
Gina Diggers .... she's been my desktop for a long long long time .... like ... wow ... um ... I think she's older than the BEA ...
-Munch "Like wow" Wolf
-
Mwuah. It changes every 3 months or so.
-
Not that it's anything special, but here you go.
-
Hmm. Imust have missed it. How do I take a pic of my desktop please? And also would any of you guys be willing to share your desktops pics at all maybe? Please!!!!
-
Press <Print Screen> then paste into the graphics program of your choice.
-
Anyone recognize her?
-
Colleen Applegate?
-
Hey, you even new her real name! For those who don't know her by that name, she was known in the porn business as Shauna Grant. Tragic story, she went way in over her head, got messed up on drugs and shot herself. But she was beautiful.
-
yeah, im boring... so sue me.
-
here's mine...
and yes, I'm a Mac user...

yay warcraft (sorry mandatory geeky thing I must do whenever a video game thing pops up)

Well here is mine. Nothing much to see as have not given it much though. But if I had some of the pics you guys had I would use them.
-
Oh yes. Lets say I gots a pic that I want to use on desktop in winxp which folder would I put it in please? And the full path if possible so I can find it.
-
A gray endless void! YAY
anyway in windows XP it does not matter where the image is you can automatically set the image you want as your desktop with the browse function in the background properties thing.
-
Aha thanks
-
I'm from the minimalist camp. Sort of a "Felix" if you want to call me that.
I started using computers when the latest OS was DOS 3.3, so I tend to have the minimal number of programs running as well as a clean desktop (even though I have 512MB of Ram). The image is usually a recent drawing I've worked on, like it is now, although I occasionally rotate the images as I feel the whim.

here is mine. It changes every week basically, rnaging from black to purple, and anywhere in between.

CarlTL, Marathon icons are what I noticed. If the game had been more popular for Windows, maybe others would have said something as well.
-
Heh... probably most of you guys know what my desktop is of... especially CarlTL and Bullet. And Strider, thats an awesome backround. I used to have a Symphony of the Night pic as my old backround... then I had a nice Super Smash Brothers Melee CG pic of all the chars standing in a line... and now I'm on my current one. I'll post the other two up just for the hell of it. And Strider... any chance you can send me that pic? ;P I'm a total Castlevania freak... then again, I'm a video game freak, period.
-
.... or not. Both pics are already in jpg format and are JUST over 150kb. Doh! If there's a way to shrink em down more, someone, feel free to pipe up and tell me how so I can share my total geekdom with you!

That's not the only sign that I am a marathon freak, I have sitting in an archive a handmade marathon single player mod which includes some eighteen multiplayer levels....
I'll give you two guesses on which one has system X and which one is the system 9 boot drive. And if Bungie had released the entire Marathon series for PC too they might not have been bought out by Microsoft.
Somewhere in the Heavens they are waiting....
Pardon me, I'm feeling rather rampant...

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin' sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!

Im a sucker for the simple things.
-
Dear God I'm blind!!!
How do you read the names of the icons on your desktop?
-
Counter strike eh? You like FPS then I takes it eh?
-
I memorize the icons, even then, I usually do everything out of the start button.
Im a fan of any good game. CS is alot of fun to just kill random people across the globe.
-
Murder most foul eh?

So. You gots any others that you likes a lot?

I'm going to be super-annoying and just link to my background image.
It's from Homestar Runner, and it's kind of boring, but... it's MARSHMALLOWS!
Okay, done. Sorry but I'm just too fweakin lazy to do a screencap.

Oh, MAN, that song always sets up camp and sticks around. Last time it happened, I had to hunt down a bunch of different versions - The Tea Party, London Symphony Orchestra, and this weird German techno [The Eternal Afflict]. . .
And, to ostensibly keep this on-topic, the Digital Blasphemy wallpaper I was asked to take down from an old job because it was "disturbing." [Apparently, the teddy bears crucified on top of my monitor weren't. . . ?]

All of you guys put the icons in the same way. Check this one out. And on monday I'm publishing my desktop at my workplace.

I love the Digital Blasphemy wallpapers and often use them, but what image did you have that "disturbed" somebody? I use them when I need (or want) to have a PG rated desktop.
Here's the link for those unfamiliar with this excellent source of wallpaper..

The one attached to my last message. . . apparently, the cubicle drones in the sales department didn't appreciate the social commentary on the office atmosphere implied in that pic.
Or they were just a bunch of unimaginiative, easily-offended sheep. :P

Okay, I'm trying to deside which Desktop to change to.
Anyone wanna help me out.
Should I choose #1
-
Number 2
-
Or Number 3
-
Until I saw the second wallpaper, I thought "Cool, Elric!" ..but, alas.
Anyway, I like either #1 or #2, but ever the practical one, I feel that #1 makes it easier to see your icons.
-
Psst...Strider...All of your icons are on the wrong side of the screen!

I like #2 the best...The icons are visible, but the whole package has a better appeal...
-
I like #1

Wouldn't it be the upper one? In previous MacOS's the boot drive would always be on the top. You're booted into OSX in the pic, so the OS9 drive would be the lower one.
I know "Durandel" was the evil AI, but I can't remember who "Tyco" was... was it the ship? The lower icon also belongs to the first Marathon.
Is there a version of the game that runs on OSX? I still have the originals around, but it would be cool not to have to play them in classic.

Correct, being the smart ass that I am, I was hoping someone familar with the Marathon series would make the connection between the names and the systems contained on the corrisponding harddrives.
Tyco was one of the three AIs on the Marathon, along with Durandal and Leela. He was incharge of the sciences, while Durandal was punished by being put in charge of the doors...I wouldn't exactly call Durandal evil, insane and rampant yes, evil no. Tyco went evil and insane after being captured by the Pfhor (see Marathon 2).
There is a OS X version out there called Marathon Aleph One. You sould be able to do a google search for it or find some information on it at www.insidemacgames.com or www.macgamefiles.com.

Well, Scarab, you got me wanting to post my current desktop. One of the best games I've ever played:
Vagarant Story

I am really late to post in this thread. I just kept putting it off!!
I'm almost always on a minimalist kick and this latest desktop reflects my central computing value...
-
That's OK, it's not a bad idea to bump this up, anyway. Of course, many of the previous posters have probably changed their desktops since they originally posted by now (like me).
BTW, RandomX, I miss seeing Inuyasha on Cartoon Network at it's previously scheduled time.

...And hubby! He's a bit of a minimalist as well, and has everything hidden...
He was a little miffed when Timbuktu took over his mouse and took a screen shot...I guess I'll just have to make it up to him somehow...Hee!

Forgive me; my footprint is a bit large...
And feel free to make fun of my icon names too.

Of course Leela is nothing compared to Cortana.
BTW, anyone else notice the "Marathon" logo on the external doors of "The Pilar of Autumn"? (check out the cut scene when Cortana tells the Master Chief to pull up when they're attempting to head back to the ship) Tons of "Marathon" referenences in "Halo".
Oh and here's my desktop. If I had more time and a Waccom tablet I would have come to the "party" with something more interesting. Oh and if you wondered, my desktop is like my brain—hopelessly cluttered and very active.

Oh and here's another one I sometimes use.

...and here's the one I tend to use when I'm feeling odd (though I also sometimes use the Tachibana "Copeland" start-up).

OK you ol' Marathon fans, remember this one?
-
Only if you could use two fusion pistols in the game. I tried it once with the forge/anvil tools and managed to crash the computer...
-
I'm not hip... what is that? It looks cool.
-
If you remember it was painful to fire the fusion pistol under water. A little shocking, actually. So in the desktop scene I imagine he's getting a little jolt as he fires. Effective weapon though to ruin someone's temporary invincibility. I also wished I could have two at once.
Nice pic anyway, can't remember the artist's name, but he also did cutscenes for the first Marathon.
Chronicler: a Marathon game mod, Tempus Irae is what this cutscene is from. First person shooter by Bungie for the Mac. Cult following. The first first person shooter (IMO) with a decent story line to go along with all that violence. I still have it loaded on two Macs at work.
-
"Marathon" had been out for quite a while when "Doom II" was ported to the Mac. "Marathon", with its multiple degrees of freedom for aiming and movement in addition to mouse-look, made "Doom II" feel quite old. I think that "Marathon" may have been the first game in which you could use rocket jump, grenade jump, and mouselook, though I could be wrong. Actually one thing that I'm sure that "Marathon" did first (at least in an F.P.S.) was have a minor branch in the story which made you do a different mission depending on how many B.O.Bs were killed in the mission in which you were to protect them. Interestingly enough there was an O2 gauge in addition to the Health gauge and that was utilized in that mission where you had to power up the communications dish, man was that a pain—then you were told that the message wouldn't reach Earth for 99 years since you were about 99 light years away.
I remember using the physics editor to edit some of the weapons. Once I altered the punch so that it had a flash of light that lasted a couple of minutes, in essence a flashlight. Actually, I do remember one physics file that managed to allow you to use 2 Zeus Fusion pistols—although sometimes it would work just fine and other times it would crash the game.
Does anyone remember "Pathways Into Darkness"?
-
Yup, man that game is HARD. Though talking to the dead nazis is rather interesting...
And if you read the story of pathways to darkness you will find that it is connected with the Marathon series...
-
I vaguely remember that. Care to fill in the details?
Though I can definately draw parallels to "Marathon" and find references to it in "Halo" (the ship of the alien force in "Halo" resembles the Pfor ship interior from "Marathon" or the fact that the Master Chief does seem to have a later model of the suit utlized by the main character from Marathon).
-
Well the alien that warns the president of the creature in the temple is a J'jaro which was the race that created the S'pht and their homeworld, and the cybernetics used by the hero in the marathon series. If you want more go to the (un) offical marathon story site right here. Its been going strong since about the dawn of the modern internet in 1995.
-
By the way, here's the Tempus Irae cutscene without the desktop if anyone is interested.
-
Mine changes usually once a month. I like strong women and I like them comical in nature. This is mine for this month. Tho I was reinstalling a game so that square box usually isn't there.
Really!!
-
Okay, I really want to participate in these festivities, but for some reason my comp using Windows 98 doesnt feel like giving me the option.
Can anyone tell me how to do this? I read the post earlier that said "Print Screen" but I have no such option.
-
If you have a keyboard, then you have the option.
It is the key right after the F12 key and usually above the insert key. Thats where it is on my keyboard anyway. once you it print screen, open up paint shop and paste it there, I think its Ctrl and the V key, but dont quote me on that.
Good luck, come join us, the water is fine...just watch out for the sharks.
-
yeah depending on what you have, I'd say if all else fails, use "mspaint". You should be able to access this program under "Accessories" in the Start Menu.
Just for the record, I have a screaming headache today.

I used to mess with my GUI alot... changing themes, desktops, icons, etc... Kind of got bored with it and finally gave up because I found the perfect combination of theme and icons for me. I use it 24/7 and won't ever change to anything else.
I've become a minimalist now and I hate having anything on my desktop other than what I'm currently working on, and even then, I always clean everything off and file it all away when I'm done because I hate having a cluttered desktop.
This is clean, neat, and looks great.
My perfect environment.

Yeah, that's a nice, 'warm' theme.

I was playing a little joke with my desktop pic, posted earlier, but apparently no one saw it that it was pointed at, couldn't read it, or didn't care.
Oh well.

The random rotation is built right into the OS. Just tell it what directory you want it to look for pictures in and you are good to go. If I wanted I could have the desktop change every 5 seconds in a random order too.

-
I found an awesome site not too long ago, animewallpapers.com (I think). I have ay over 400 incredible wallpapers, so I've been changing them daily at random. Here's tonights' pick.
-
Nimrod and I have different computers but I get to use the
one with more POWER!
Anyway - I have been using a program called
Wallpaper Changer by Frank Pleitz that was freeware and I
really like it. You see I like to make my own desktop
wallpaper or really edit other images. After a while I
had so many that it was a pain in the neck to change it
by hand.
Wallpaper Changer version 1.9 works on my Windows ME and
will automatically change my desktop each day to a graphic
that I can set. That way I can have a whole year's worth
of graphics, one on each day, but THEY AREN'T RANDOM!
That way I can have a Happy Birthday graphic on Nimrod's
B-day, or have the Easter background exactly on the right day.
Most other changers don't allow for this.
Oh, I had a VERY BAD experience with **19** back in 1998
The bottom line is that from the moment I installed
**19** it really really messed up the computer I
had then
I ended up having to reformat the whole thing.
Well, Nimrod did the work and it was
not fun.
So, now I have a new desktop each day and it is in keeping
with the calendar. I have 365 desktops!
One can find Wallpaper Changer at
www.wallpaperchanger.de
-
Here's the image I use for my desktop. The actual desktop is incredibly cluttered.
-
Oooh Harble, where did you get that from? I'd love to get a full sized picture of it!
-
There's a slightly higher resolution and slightly larger version of that picture here. That's about as large as I can find it, and I suppose you could blow it up from there if you wanted. I haven't tried.

Spiffy, thank you!

Elegance and simplicity is a must for my OS as well as along my desktop.

Styk, you DO know that you don't have to have the files on your desktop with their original icons and filenames, don't you? Instead of "ILLEGALSHIT1," ILLEGALSHIT2," etc., you realize that you CAN download (and even design) other icons and give them filenames like "NOTHINGILLEGALHERE," "NOI DON'THACKWHY?" and "CUTEFUZZYBUNNIES." Why advertise?

On my desktop you can all see my other passion... (Other then my girlfriend, big breasts, ...)
You can all check the today's @time to see how recent it is...
And I had to change the quality in order to be able to post here (due to size limitations)... but the definition of the original is much better...

Tonight's random wallpaper...

Carl, way cool desktop, but the girl needs a bigger set!

By the way, you should head over to versiontracker and DL a cool little utility called Transparent Dock. It will get rid of that boring old dock and let you have something cool, like this...

Behold....Keiji Muto!

Hey, MW! You finally changed your desktop!
He hasn't done that in, ooooh, ..a long time.
Sorry I never completed a new Gold Digger montage desktop I planned on making you. First the drive I saved the work on seemed to have died, then I just lost interest even after the drive "came back to life".
I looked back over this thread and realized that I've been remiss in displaying a number of desktops I've used. Generally any alterations on drawings I've completed tend to spend some time as a desktop. Here's a favorite desktop of two of my favorite (virtual) girls. Although the signature for Jason Waltrip is shown for his contribution, the girl on the left is courtesy of Solomon Russell.

I got the box set for Firefly too! Plus I had to buy the tv guide that mentions the making of the movie. Of course I've been meaning to pass the "guide" onto my busty friend around work since she's a "Six Feet Under" fan.

I'm from the minimalist camp. Sort of a "Felix" if you want to call me that.
I started using computers when the latest OS was DOS 3.3, so I tend to have the minimal number of programs running as well as a clean desktop (even though I have 512MB of Ram). The image is usually a recent drawing I've worked on, like it is now, although I occasionally rotate the images as I feel the whim.

boobman69 asked: Quote:

..back in Nov'04 and I missed it till now. Sorry BM!
The post you quoted me from (posted June'03!) was a Frank Cho drawing that I colored (and stripped her of her cloths) back then. I just WISH I could draw like Frank "Monkeyboy" Cho (of Liberty Meadows fame).
If it's HIS art you want to see more of, here's the link..
Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows Internet Sanctuary
..but also go here for more..
Basement Comics (Home of Cavewoman)
..and look for work by Frank Cho (but check out the other fine work by Budd Root and Devon Massey).
If by some chance you are looking for more of my alterations to other people's drawings, you will have to do a search on my posts for all the drawings I've placed in threads since I registered. You would also have to become a Member of the BEA to see everything I've posted to the User's Gallery because it's all moved to the Member's Gallery now. Then, there's the images on Doc Ross's Gallery which will also require a membership.

Me, I've always favored having a high-res wide-field telescopic image as a background, or at least a thoughtful and convincing render of an extra-terrestrial scene. This one, which I've only had up a week or so, is a picture of a nebula more fancifully referred to as The Dark River to Antares.

Yeah. To this day, especially with that with that weird keyboard effect (at least, I *think* it's a keyboard), the intro to track 5 ("The Oath") of that album still creeps me out. I dunno, that weird, irregular shifting of the keyboard's pitch never fails to send a chill down my spine.

This IS my current desktop, but it's probably not that interesting because I'm currently just using a flat color instead of a picture. You can see I have a lot of drag and drop converters on the desktop. I usually have the dock hidden, but I thought I'd unhide it for the picture.

Is that the way the menus are usually set up? I didn't remember there being so much on the top and so little on the bottom. I do remember that unlike Macs or PCs, it's easy to move things around where you want.
Pal replies: yah, they call them 'panels' (bars/docks for menus and desktop tools) and you can choose any edge to place them on as well as which items you want each to contain (of course, you can also alias items to the desktop itself though I personally like to keep it empty). As far as what's on top normally (before adding extra items) it's just the three menus (Applications, Places, System) along with the help ("?") and browser buttons on the left and the clock/calendar, Empathy email/IM/chat and audio on the right (network has been moved up there too after I took this grab). The other things on the bottom are just minimized windows, which I now display within a menu from the top instead of as individual buttons in the bottom panel (so now the bottom is empty except for the trash of course, which seems to want to stay in the lower right corner no matter what). There are a whole bunch of options for how the UI looks, and of course you can set panels to be invisible (desktop shows through), autohide, etc... but I've got pretty much everything fairly close to stock
In addition to the standard items, I've added just a few extras including a dictionary tool, shutdown button and a screen grabber. Generally, I prefer a somewhat minimalist desktop overall.
Added later: from your desktop, I see that maybe you use EyeTV... did you ever make a thread about it? I've always wanted one.

I've been enjoying The Gates recently, and wanted to put up something on my desktop with Rhona Mitra. I found this in an old folder labeled for Rhona, and while I'm enjoying it, I've been questioning whether it's actually her. The only other image I have in her folder is a Pacman morph of this image, so I'll have to go hunting for some more wallpapers with her sometime.
Any feedback on if the model is really Rhona Mitra would be appreciated, too.
-
Any feedback on if the model is really Rhona Mitra would be appreciated, too.
You might already know it, but Rhona Mitra was the original Lara Croft model they took to video game conventions (if I remember correctly). They fired her (I'd think) because she was getting too well known as the character. She's also in StarGate Universe recently as their current enemy.
The picture looks like a mixture of digital painting and photographs. Elements could be from multiple models, or even completely original. To me, it looks like the TR clothes may have been added, or they at least look very airbrushed.

I've used Ubuntu before, but it was several versions ago. When planing to replace my old G4, I considered Linux, Windows, and building a Hackintosh. I tried a number of versions of Linux and the art and drawing software available.
My brother got me an EyeTV 250 Plus a number of years ago. It has some imperfections, but it's better than the only other video capture device I've used. Should I start a thread about it? What would you like to know about it?
Pal replies: I'm new to Linux in general and only used Ubuntu 9.x for a short while before 10 came out and switching to it, so I can't speak to how much of an improvement was made when 10 was released from a functionality standpoint. However, from a GUI standpoint, 10 looks as modern as OSX, and cleaner than either Vista or Seven, whereas Ubuntu 9.x felt more like Mac OS9 or Windows 95/98 from an interface standpoint. Having run OSX, Vista and Ubuntu lately, I'm liking the Ubuntu 10.x GUI most of all, even though I'm still a Mac guy at heart (26 years is a long time and you get used to a thing). ;) As it happens, I *did* try to Hackintosh the Dell on which I'm now running Ubuntu, installing and troubleshooting 3 different Hackintosh kernels with help from Chev, but none ran properly/with any stability, thus negating the whole point of OSX IMO, so that prompted me to try Ubuntu (since Vista eventually turned out to be awful IMO). As I'm now a Linux fan, it all worked out for the best (of course, I don't play any games at all and fairly basic/free graphics software satisfies my needs).
I asked about the EyeTV because I'm always curious about what systems folks use for video capture... when I was shopping for one a couple years ago, the 250 was what I was zeroing in on IIRC. You needn't post about it solely on my account... I was just wondering if you already had so I could learn of your impressions re: its usability (as a Tivo replacement), the image quality of the caps/clips, what limits you might have encountered in terms of resolution/frame rate due to CPU/bus bandwidth, etc... Just part of my natural nosiness I guess. ;)
PS: pardon my editing into your post to reply... I know doing so doesn't mark the thread as edited... but I'm just trying to keep a lid on my post count inflated as it is due (in part) to all the extra posts I must make as a moderator. :)

Yeah, my Hackintosh attempts resulted in a computer that would crash whenever you ran anything that used 3D effects, even the Chess program. It wasn't stable enough to consider. One of the things I like about Linux is that there are so many different versions, some have a lot of eye candy, some are bare-bones, others are somewhere in-between, and they can use the same programs.

Let's see... It's a small USB2 device that has three connectors: cable TV, composite, and s-video. I've used it on my current computer (Early 2009 Mac mini), and my previous one (2002 G4/dual 1ghz). I haven't upgraded to the newest software (which I would need to do if I wanted to upgrade the mini to Snow Leopard), I have 2.5.3, which is a version or two behind.
The software is a little slow to start on both computers (takes about the same time as Photoshop CS1), and it always opens a window of the currently selected video source. It -had- an online cable-box-like program guide, but it used "TitanTV", and was only free for about a year or two. It can still record, but you have to set in the times like with a VCR (but you can set schedules to repeat, name them, etc). There are a number of different window size options, there have been times where my computer wasn't in view of any television and I've used it to display a small window of whatever I wanted to watch while I worked. Most often though I've used it to convert old VHS tapes to DVDs.
The picture quality isn't perfect, especially when watching though the cable TV there are some lines in the video. It's possible it's more sensitive than a TV or VCR, or that it's some issue with the cable wire or connection. Some tweaking might solve it. Currently, the picture is better though the (composite) connection to the VCR than directly using the cable feed. I don't have any kind of HD source (if it allows HD), both computers could handle full resolution SD video at normal (30 fps?) frame rates. The software has several options for how big you might want the MPEG files. When recording I do sometimes notice a little lag with the computer in general, but I've never sat and tried to figure out how much of that is processor related, and how much is hard drive related.
It comes with a remote control, it can do picture in picture, it can export to many kinds of files, the newer version can edit files, it has an optional full-screen menu. When TitanTV was active it could name the files after the episode recorded, and also give it a summary.
It's not perfect, but I like it. It's better than the Windows-based ATI wonder-something-rather I've used before. The video looks better, and the software makes more sense. I have sometimes had issues with it stopping a several-hour recording, there might be a file size limit for a single file.
Pal replies: THANKS for the info Lightfoot, I appreciate it! :)

Yes, I think this is the main reason why this is in my Rhona Mitra folder...I wasn't aware of any other Tomb Raider models when I saved it (or perhaps the person posting it said it was her), so that's how it got there. But I don't know that it's her for sure; at least, the face doesn't look the way she does now (as I've seen the SGU episodes with her, as well as her role on The Gates). Maybe she's had some work done, but I more strongly suspect the face belongs to another model, and was hoping someone might have some info one way or the other. The original artist/composer seems to have the handle "DannyC" but I don't even know where to start looking for that individual's work.

Pal have you tried http://everyjoe.com/technology/the-perfect-os-x-dock-for-linux/?utm_source=everyjoe&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=b5hubs_migration (http://everyjoe.com/technology/the-perfect-os-x-dock-for-linux/?utm_source=everyjoe&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=b5hubs_migration)
Pal replies: I appreciate the assist, but I'm not sure what good that (AWM) might do for me. I don't feel any need to make the standard Ubuntu GUI look like OSX... I'm perfectly happy/comfortable with the Ubuntu GUI as-is, though I agree that it's cute to make a Linux box look so much like an OSX box if that's what you're after. Me, I just deleted the bottom panel completely since all it contained was the trash (which I'll get used to at the top of the screen) so as to recover those last few inches of desktop real-estate and background. :)
Not to go off-topic (any more than we already have ;) ) but the MAIN THING I MISS ABOUT OSX now that I'm using Ubuntu is that Ubuntu doesn't recognize/support the OSX 'Labels' feature that allows you to quickly color file and folder icons as displayed in the GUI. Having been using Mac OS for decades, I've become dependent upon this feature (red icons for time-sensitive files, green for favorite items, grey for moot ones, etc...) and many of the zillions of files and folders on my Mac have been color-coded by me like this over time. The fact that Ubuntu won't do this (as far as I can tell) is what's kept me from bringing my whole archive of files over from the Mac to the Ubuntu machine. :( I've looked around online, and seen other Ubuntu users pine for the same feature (to be added to a future Ubuntu build or made possible by a third-party tool) but so far, I've not seen any way to make it possible. :-[ I'll be deeply indebted to anyone who knows how to make this possible and shares the info.

Decided to switch the wallpaper for August, but wanted to keep a Tomb Raider image; after rooting around a bit, I found this classic by Rocketeer. 8)

How do you manage with staring at a nearly-all-black background all day, Colonel? That can't be easy on the eyes.

This is the minimalist desktop on my elderly ThinkPad laptop running Ubuntu... keeping it simple and efficient: all the GUI eye-candy effects turned off and no desktop background at all. Like my desktop, what's normally at the bottom edge of the screen has been moved to the top bar leaving as much open real estate as possible.
-
GREAT SCOTT!!
-
I like this one better ;).

At work, I don't get to do much to customize my computer. One of the few things I *can* do is change the wallpaper. Of course, I can't use anything that might cause a problem - no pics of babes, for example. So it's landscapes, astrophotographs, or simple patterns.
To help alleviate the monotony, I occasionally poke around the websites for home decor supplies, and see if they have any sample images for designer wallpaper that tile nicely.
Using wallpaper for my wallpaper.... hmmm....

I just love this picture I found. :D

Dunno which I like more, RX's desktop or her avatar. OK, I do know, but that is a pretty cool Venture Brothers illustration, so it warrants a close second. ;)
I finally broke down and bought a new monitor yesterday: nothing fancy... a 20" widescreen LED/LCD from Acer that got 4.5 stars on Amazon and was on sale for $79. at Fry's. I'm running it at it's max. res. of 1600x900 with the brightness turned down and the contrast turned up (I keep the computer area dimly lit as a rule) and it's quite nice: crisp and spacious. It replaces a pair of old 15" LCDs I'd been using ever since my 21" Samsung died. While I was swapping monitors, I also pulled a new (unused, but actually a decade old) high-end PS2 keyboard out of my stash and swapped it for the newer/lighter USB one I had been using. So, all it'll take for my system to feel completely new is to upgrade to Ubuntu 11, but that's something I'm in no rush to do given that it, like many other GUIs, seems to be trending towards a very iOS-like design. :(
Attached is a cap of my usual minimalist desktop (sourced from an older Adult Swim bump) scaled down 50%.
-
Just a test: there was a bigger monitor (a 23" capable of 1920x1080) for just $20. more so I bought it and am kicking the tires. It's an eMachines E230H and I suspect that it and the Acer I got last week are both made by the same manufacturer: the on-screen interface seems identical (and in online reviews, some Windows users reported that their computers 'recognized' the eMachines as an Acer).
The image quality looks very good ...this particular monitor wasn't at Amazon, but it got 4.5 stars out of 5 at Staples.com with 138 reviews (of course, there's no knowing if the reviews are actually genuine). The eMachines case has a matte finish (instead of glossy like the Acer) and an equally thin bezel. In fact, the only thing that might be an issue with the eMachines display is the fact that it rocks very slightly as I type (it's noticeably wider than the Acer but has an equally dainty stand). This is due to the computer desk I'm using atm being mostly made of sheet metal. It's not a deal breaker (I can rig a brace to stabilize everything) but I'll give it a few days to see how I like it before making a decision and returning the other one.
I suspect the Acer will be going back since I'm apparently an incorrigible slut for large numbers of pixels. ;)
The attached cap of the desktop is also downsized by 50% in Gimp.
Added later: I've already packed up the 20" display and will return it tomorrow. ;)
Added later still: yep, the 20" went back and this 23" display is a delight. I'm not saying I'd not decline even more, but 1920x1080 makes for plenty of elbow room. ;)

Mine's pretty clean. I've really moved away from having a million icons on the screen.
I have a pretty vast collection of desktops, ranging from H.R.Giger ones, to galaxies, to Hello Kitty ones, but mostly I use this one:

I recently changed computers and operating systems. My preferred desktop background, from an Adult $wim bump some years ago, remains constant: easy on the eyes and a soothing positive affirmation. Here it is (scaled down to 50% of actual size) on my current/temp PC running Linux Mint 15 (64-bit with Cinnamon GUI):
-
For a while Kithara and I attempted to use a wallpaper / desktop background changer that would update each day to a new file from a master list. It only sort of worked. Almost all of these types of changers are some manner of random or every X minutes sort of thing which was not what we wanted.
In the end we just manually change the backgrounds. Not as cool but it gets the job done.
The ancillary benefit of all this is it gave Kithara something to do when she was not feeling well and resulted in 3650 (ten years worth) of indexed and seasonally appropriate (think snow in the winter, fall leaves in autumn, etc.) backdrops - one for each day. I should point out she did this for both of our computers so it is actually 7300 indexed images.
Below is from the year 3 set / Nimrod's screen / November 29:

What pic do you have on your desktop? (Not at work obviously). I used to have Lucy P in her black pineapple top on the dt, when this one from miriam caught my eye -- outstanding!

And this is the desktop from the oldest/lowest-spec PC I have/use regularly (P4 CPU w/<half GB of RAM and just a 40GB HD). As soon as I get a big SD card for it (256GB or better yet, 512GB) it'll be the only PC I have that's running 24/7. It had Windows XP on it originally, but was basically unusable that way (with modern apps and websites) so I wiped that and installed the 32-bit/non-PAE version of Crunchbang Linux instead, with it's minimalist Openbox GUI... it takes just a little time to get used to it, but then it's wonderful. ;)
Edit: the dark grey background is one of the few built-in choices and it suits this little netbook fine. By default, the desktop GUI itself is very clean and mostly monochrome (with little splashes of color for some icons, etc...) which helps keep it usable on such a small screen. Thus, the dark grey works fine... that text at right are system stats (CPU usage, etc...) and shortcuts... I'm sure there's some way to turn them off, just as there's some way to replace the desktop with an image file, but most of that stuff requires editing config text files and why bother? ;)
Before you ask: neither Ubuntu nor Mint have non-PAE/32 bit versions available anymore for really old PCs like this. #! is one of the few distros that enable you to run a current OS/apps on such an old PC, God bless it. :)

Is that Hadrian's wall ?
I believe it is. It is about 10 miles north of here. So, seemed apt as a wallpaper. It isn't the best picture of the wall, but I liked the sunset and the countryside.
George RR Martin took inspiration from Hadrain's Wall for the wall in Game if Thrones apparently.

Yeah, I like striking nature pictures for my wallpapers. I usually have waterfalls, mountains, lakes, canyons, caves, that sort of stuff, up on my desktop.
