Rant Mode: ON
« on: August 14, 2021, 09:56:58 PM »
(For all your rants and complaints and gripes about hardware, software, and other computer stuff)

1. Mozilla, when you send out your latest update, DO NOT override people's carefully crafted display settings. Many of us do NOT like having the spacing on the Bookmarks dropdown menu increased so that half of our bookmarks vanish behind the "scroll down to see more" arrow.....

2. Performing Arts Ticket Sellers, do NOT automatically assume we have your app installed on our smartphones - or that we'd even WANT to install it. You want to use QR or Bar codes? Fine. Send us the code via the e-mail address we gave you for the order confirmation, so we can print it out or copy the image to our phone ourselves.

So much so that I have a computer with the version of Firefox on it frozen and no new addons are allowed to be added. The reason: one of their updates completely borked all of my addons and it took me forever to figure out which version to revert to and to get some (but unfortunately not all) of those addons back.

I think I still have Eventbrite on my phone for the one and only time I had to download it to get a ticket to some event. I should delete it.

Android Police: "YouTube confirms everyone using downvotes is just being a jerk, hides public display"

"According to the site, this is a method to prevent creators from dealing with large groups of bad-faith actors downvoting a video en masse. There's no doubt smaller, independent makers have faced these issues in the past, but it's impossible to look at the most disliked videos in the website's history and not see this as a way to stifle criticism towards major corporations. YouTube's own 2018 Rewind video is the most downvoted in history, while the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer remains high up on the list as well. Recent examples of heavily disliked content include Nintendo's unveiling of the "Expansion Pack" for its online subscription plan. The rest of the list is primarily made up of low-effort music videos for chi!dren."

No one asked for this change which makes it unnecessarily difficult to quickly see that a tutorial is trash. That like/dislike ratio bar was vital. Now they've removed it, despite some of the site's biggest creators, and even one of the three co-founders of the site, speaking out against the move and giving excellent reasons why not to do it. The arrogant way they introduced it (with one of their minions literally saying on video "you'll get used to it") rankles me to this day. Instead of putting systems in place to fix bot and spam comments, they decide to "fix" something that didn't need fixing. Idiots.

I am getting VERY frustrated with my computer. It should NOT take something like five minutes from the time I press the "on" button to the point where I can start doing things. I've done the usual troubleshooting and anti-malware stuff; they show no problems. Task Manager shows a bunch of resource-hungry processes happening, but as far as I can determine (from online searching), they are all important. Once I get through all that interminable waiting, I have no problems.

(By the way, WTF is "Intel Rapid Storage Technology", and why does it seem to take so fershlugginer long to load?)

Is there an application that will show what my computer is doing - what processes are being run, what stuff is being loaded, etc. - as it boots up and gets ready for me to use?

On Windows yes - Task Manager, or Resources Monitor.

To access Task Manager right click taskbar or press Control + shift + escape.

I'm almost certain this is external to me, but if anyone can tell me what this means when I try to log in to a site and this comes up instead, I'd appreciate it:

You know how a 404 page error means "page not found'? A 500 error is like a catch-all error:

"If you try to visit a website and see a '500 Internal Server Error' message, it means something has gone wrong with the website. This isn’t a problem with your browser, your computer, or your internet connection. It’s a problem with the site you’re trying to visit."

Do you get that same error with another browser on the same machine, or on a mobile browser on your phone, by any chance?

Different browser(s) on a different machine. So it's probably not me, and is something at their end.
