As even a cursory look at the patent laws in (for instance) the People's Republic of China would show, that is simply not true.

Drake's law may be invalid since I think it was postulated before we were able to detect just how many stars had planetary systems, along with which ones were Jovian like gas giants, or smaller terrestrial planets in the "Goldie Locks" zone of the star all do to Hubble and other space based instruments.

The Drake Equation is still valid for the reasons it always was - it's just a way to ESTIMATE the likelihood of being able to find intelligent life in the universe. The latest science is just changing the values for the variables in the equation.

And if your destination on such a trip is Proxima Centauri, the closest star to earth, which is 4.3 light years away, means at light speed you can get there with in the 5 years, but returning also takes an additional 4.3 years. So a trip where you travel out and back at light speed for 5 years, will not even get you to another solar system.
