Italy isn't that hot compared to the USA Southwest like Nevada where I live. 

You may be right, although there has been some very high temperatures in Europe this year. The sun in Italy is still strong enough to damage the skin.

Geographically speaking, the closest super hot weather area near Europe is the Sahara Desert in North Africa which is similar to the Northwest of Mexico and the Southwest of the USA.
