Opened in 1941 a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack which got the USA into Worl War 2, the El Cortez Hotel and Casino went through an extensive renovation and expansion in 2019. It is located in downtown Las Vegas on East Fremont street and it is a cheap place to stay compared to the properties on The Strip. It is just to the East of the Fremont Street Experience, which is the world's longest video screen at 1300 feet in which properties like Binion's, Golden Nugget, Four Queens and more are located at. The El Cortez has an old fashion vibe, and they still have coin operated slot machines. In 2013, it was placed in the National Historic Sites list.

The oldest state park in North Dakota, Fort Abraham Lincoln, named after the 16th President of the USA . Located near the Mandan Indian reservation, an encampment of the Lewis and Clark expedition and an old US Infantry Post.

The basic idea of this thread is to show notable architecture, not random buildings.  How is this building special, interesting or different?  Why is it here?  I’m talking about the actual building, not how many gas pumps it has.

Your last three posts don’t really show anything about architecture, per se.  A casino, a park and a buc-ees?  There are so many great examples of interesting architecture out there, worldwide and you post a buc-ees?

This thread is about old and new buildings. How can you say than an 83 year old casino is not a building? That fort in North Dakota was a US Army facility 150 years ago. How is that not a building? And Buckees are gigantic gas stations, and they have 70,000 square feet and more convenience stores. That's why they are notable to me.

Oh, my goodness, what an idiot I was to simply say that this thread was about old and new buildings.  While that is basically what I said, architecture is the art and technique of designing those buildings.  The inference is something interesting and notable, not a buccee’s.  If you can’t understand that idea, I don’t know what to tell you. Buckee's are such massive gas stations that when I saw one the first time in Texas, it put a strong imprint in my mind. Yes, they are not like the Empire State building or the Palacio de las Bellas Artes or the Eiffel Tower or Buckingham Palace, but they are architectural structures.

On October 20, 2024, the last K Mart in the contiguous United states will close its last store at the Bridgehampton Mall in Bridgehampton, New York. I put this up here due to its architectural look and how I remember they had Blue Light specials in the stores and its merger with Sears was a disaster for both stores and the pandemic really ruined it for good. It is sad to see it go, or at least it is to me.

Me neither. During World War 2, very many historical buildings were destroyed, and it is very fortunate that this particular structure wasn't destroyed during a battle. If you see what is happening in Ukraine right now, the Russians are purposely turning everything they attack and occupy into rubble and in World War 2, the Germans and Soviets did the same. Hitler ordered his Generals to raze Paris as the Allies were approaching the city, but fortunately the German Commanding Officer disobeyed that order and withdrew the German troops, otherwise the Eiffel tower or the Versailles castle would have been ruined just like the Germans destroyed Warsaw in the Eastern front.

I was stationed here in Point Loma submarine base on three different times for a total of 12 years during my Navy career. It is still the largest and most important submarine in the Pacific Ocean.
