Opened on March 2, 1936, to celebrate and mark the centennial of the battle of independence from Mexico by Texas, In San Jacinto located East of present-day Houston, the tallest obelisk in the United States is there. It was there where Texans surprised and ambushed a much larger Mexican force and captured the Dictator of Mexico, Jose Lopez de Santa Ana, and forced him to sign a treaty allowing Texas to secede from Mexico in order to save his life. The Republic of Texas gained independence and was recognized by Britain, France, Russia and the United States as an independent nation. In 1845, Texas joined the United States.

A pretty cool rooftop garden on a pretty cool old building.  Is this the garden they used in a scene in one of the Spider-man movies?

Built from 28 January 1887, and completed on March 15, 1889, and opened on March 31 1889, the most famous structure in Paris France is the Eiffel Tower, a "temporary" structure that remains to this day. It was the tallest man-made structure at 330 meters or 1083 feet in height and it surpassed the tallest before that, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt built about 4,000 years before by the ancient Egyptians. Here in Vegas, we have a 1/2 scale one on The Strip. It is one of the most visited sites in the world.

Pretty cool pic of the art deco Greyhound bus station and the Beaux-Arts style Penn Station across 33rd Street.  Circa 1936

Opened in 1966, this was the first casino in Las Vegas that allowed parents to bring their children to the hotel section of the complex BUT NOT into the casino itself. It has above the casino floor a real circus with circus acts and it had/has the cheapest buffet on the strip. It is an iconic property.  :)

Built in 1966 in order to assemble the Saturn V rocket, which could not be transported whole anywhere in the United States, the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building located at the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida has also helped fully assemble other very large space vehicles like the Space Shuttle and the Artemis rocket. There are four doors to access the assembly bay of the building and they are the largest doors in the world. It is 160 meters or 526 feet tall. On January 21, 2000, it was put in the National Register of Historic Places.

Opened on May 27, 1930, the world's tallest brick building with a steel frame, at 1046 feet or 319 meters tall, one of the most beautiful and iconic Art Deco style buildings in the world, she was the tallest for 11 months until the Empire State building surpassed it. The Chrysler Building remains a significant landmark of New York City. The gargoyles found on its corners are actually hood ornaments patterned after 1930's old Chrysler cars.

The largest casino and hotel in Las Vegas is the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino which has 5005 rooms, suites and mansions total and is located in the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard, Aka The Strip, and Tropicana Road and opened on December 18, 1993, and the opening act for Christmas and New Year was Barbra Streisand. It was developed by Kirk Kerkorian. That year, three major properties opened, The Luxor, The Treasure Island and the MGM Grand. Their themes were ancient Egypt, Pirates and MGM Grand was the Wizard of Oz, since that is an MGM movie. It is the corporate main property of MGM Resorts International.

A property I worked at for about 5 years before I decided to retire, The Wynn Hotel and Casino was opened in April of 2005 at a cost of $2.7 Billion making it the most expensive hotel/casino in the world at the time with 2716 rooms in its 45 floors building which was the tallest standing building in Nevada at the time. In December of 2008, the expansion tower located just North of the Wynn, called The Encore was added with 2032 rooms and the total cost of the complex was $5.2 billion. It is a Five Star property and considered the most luxurious in town. It ain't cheap. It is in the north side of the strip on Las Vegas Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road intersection. It is across the street from The Venetian/Palazzo property which has over 7,000 rooms/suites and the new MSG Sphere which recently opened.

I had no idea 42nd Street had an elevated line.

This is NYC in 1887.  You are apparently looking westward from the Third Avenue El down 42nd St. at the then new connecting spur to Grand Central Depot, which can be seen on the right with the cupolas.   None of the buildings in this view is currently standing.

Yeah, I didn't know they had elevated lines back in the era of steam.  I'd hate to be at one of those second or third floor windows when a locomotive passed by.

You just reminded me of a scene in the movie The Blues Brothers with Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi where that elevated train in Chicago passes by their crappy apartment.  ;D
