Constructed from 1882 to 1888, the Texas State Capitol building in Austin, Texas, was the first state capitol building which surpassed in height the National Capitol building in Washington D.C. because, well, it is Texas and everything is bigger in Texas. It was funded by selling public land on the Texas panhandle of 3,000,000 acres or 12,000 Km2 which created the world's largest cattle ranch, the XIT ranch which is still around. By the way, they found oil there later on.

The Chicago Water Tower was built in 1869 and survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, despite everything around it having been razed to the ground. It houses the tall machinery of a powerful water pump.

Practical and beautiful.  Wonderful way of building something that could look really plain or even crappy, considering it's purpose.  Building it as a castle like tower was just inspired.

The world's first multipurpose indoor domed stadium in the world, the Houston Astrodome. Opened in 1965 and still standing even though it has essentially been abandoned, it was the home field for the Houston Astros baseball team from 1965 to 1999 and the NFL Houston Oilers from 1968 to 1996 when the team move to Nashville, Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans and it was the home of the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo from 1966 to 2002. It was also a venue for large concerts like Elvis Presley did his last concert show there in 1977 before he died later that year. When I lived in Houston, I did go to it and the theme park Astroworld was nearby. remember, Houston is the main headquarter of NASA which is why there is a lot of space-based stuff in Houston, not just oil and gas. By the way, Texas has more of the top Fortune 500 headquarters companies than any other state of the union due to the idiotic anti-business politics of prior kings New York and California, so they moved away.

Calico Ghost town. Built as a mining town in 1881 when there was a Silver rush nearby, a few years later the mine was no longer producing, and the town was abandoned. In 1950, Walter Knott, founder of the theme park Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Vista, California, bought the town and restored it to look like it originally did and made it into a visitor park. In 2005, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed it as a California Historical landmark. When I travel from Vegas to see my brother in Southern California on I-15, near the town of Barstow there is a small road that takes you to it.

New York City 1930 - The International Magazine Building.  William Randolph Hearst commissioned a 13 story building for his NY HQ.  Construction began in 1928 but ended six months later due to the stock market crash and the onset of the Great Depression. 



It remained like that until 1999 until the Hearst Corporation decided on a new corporate HQ in Manhattan.  Instead of building an all-new building it was decided to refurbish the original facade and gut the interior.

Originally opened on January 13, 1906, the casino section was shut down when gambling was forbidden in 1909 but, during the depths of the Great Depression, the Nevada legislature in 1931 legalized gambling and prost1tution allowing each county to decide if they wanted such activity, and The Golden Gate hotel and casino received the license to reopen the casino and it has license #1 in Las Vegas and it is the oldest in the state of Nevada. It is located on Fremont street in downtown and it is by the Fremont Street Experience and it was the first and only place left now which invented the $1 shrimp cocktail back in the early 70's. It cost more than $1 now, inflation you know. So, if you ever want to see old Vegas, this is the place.

Named after Fort Dodge, which was shut down in 1882 and originally built to protect the area of the Old Santa Fe Trail, Dodge City was established in 1871 by rancher Henry J. Sitler west of the fort and in 1872, the Santa Fe railroad established a station and then Texas ranchers started to drive their cattle herds from Texas to the nearest train station, Dodge City, Kansas, to ship their cattle to the Eastern USA, most who went to Chicago, and while the cattle drives didn't last so long when the railroads built rail lines in Texas itself, the cattle drives left an impression on the American West. When I was a kid back in the 60's and a teenager in the 70's, one of my favorite TV shows was Gunsmoke starring James Arness which was based in this town and I'm hoping to visit the town this year. The town still retains some of its look from its boom time in the 1870's from what I see on tourist brochures.
