That's not a very nice sign she's making.

Unless she's in America...  :P

Funny you should mention that Eliza...

Of course while Churchill did use the V sign as V for victory, the two fingered insult actually dates back to most likely to the 14th or 15th century when England and France were at war. The skill of English archers was legendary so if any archers were captured by the French they would cut off the two fingers most useful for archery as a way of deterring the English archers. So whenever the English came into contact with the French, they would give them the fingers to show that they still had use of them and would shortly be using them to kill a lot of French people.

Really?  That's not like a myth or something?  That's a real bit o' history?

I always wondered how two fingers split meant "F-U".  That's too cool.

Thanks Salem!  :D

The oft-repeated archery origin story for the V sign is untrue.

Oh man!  So, we're back to not knowing why the two finger salute is used in England?

It's not necessarily untrue; we just don't know if that was the true origin.

But anyways, boobies.

You could be right, but then as neither of us was alive in the 15th century we'll never truly know. Bernard Cornwell, writer of the Sharpe novels and the amazing novel about the Battle of Agincourt mentions it on more than one occasion that the V sign originated as a derogatory sign against the French. His books are subject to rigorous historical research so I doubt whether he would put something like that in them if there was not the chance that it were true.  While I would suggest that capturing English Archers makes no real sense, why not just kill them outright? I'm sure the cutting off of two fingers and sending you off as a warning to others does have some merit, although cutting something else off would probably deter them further. Historians are still debating the legitimacy of the origin and while it may be dismissed as mythology, even myths have origins.

The 'pluck yew' thing is total bollocks I agree.
