Ooh am I going to get flamed.

Underrrated:  Alice Cooper and especially his band.  Just listened to them again, and I forgot how tight that band was, even live!

Overrated:  (OBoy, here we go) The Rolling Stones.  You've got to admit they've overstayed their welcome creatively.  I 've never really been impressed by most of their older blues-based rock either.  Many less hyped bands that played during this earlier period were better (I give you Cream, for instance).

Overrated- Blondes. Especially blue-eyed blondes. They just don't do much for me.

Underrated- Asian babes. I just love a tiny chick with short, dark hair, brown eyes, and a nice rack.

Cool! Post #420. Toke 'em if you got 'em!

TV shows:

Overrated: Reality shows - they're not real, if they were they would be boring.  Also, I think that most sitcoms are overrated as well.  I haven't liked any sitcom since Seinfeld.

Underrated: Cartoon Network's Adult Swim - some good anime and hilarious cartoons

Overrated/Underrated: Music genres and subgenres
« Reply #18 on: September 19, 2003, 12:45:42 AM »
Overrated: Bubblegum pop.  I'm not even explaining.

Underrated: Jazz.  A lot of people forget that there was a time when this WAS the popular music in America.  Now it counts for less than 10% of all CD sales.  There's not nearly as much happening here as there once was, but it's a lot more than what's happening on the Top 40.

Within the genre of jazz:

Overrated: Swing/big band.  The late-'90s post-Swingers swing craze was a great time, yes, but there are plenty of other subgenres that are equally good or better.  Just so happens big band is arguably by far the most universally accessible form of jazz.  We hear it in cartoons, in old movies, at dances, around the holidays.  The form doesn't require thought: There's a fun tune, some solos, and the tune resumes and the song ends, and it's usually pretty short, which is good for attention spans.  And it's fun.  But other stuff still goes un-rediscovered.

Underrated: Lounge.  Crazy as it may sound, I think that's the most underrated of the jazz subgenres, because it doesn't entirely take itself seriously, and it requires listening in two different ways at once: For the greatness (or badness, depending on the song) of the music, and for the fun (sometimes hilarity) at the same time.  Lounge breaks down into somewhere near a dozen of its OWN subgenres...I won't go into those, but will just say that a lot of people dismiss it as crap or cheese or simply bad music.  I thought this too, until I stumbled onto Capitol's wonderful Ultra-Lounge CD series several years back.  A lot of this music is really really good, and its dual role makes it a more complex genre than it gets credit for being.

No...I think I have a better chance of that...

Here it goes...(wish me luck!)

Overrated : Women that are very beautiful, yet do not possess a brain! I love beautiful women...especially BUSTY beautiful women! But, I  DON'T  want an airhead that I can't at least TALK to! There are far too many of these women that are worshiped solely for their looks and their behavior and lack of intelligence isn't even mentioned. Looks are something...but they aren't EVERYTHING! She has to be funny, sweet, nice, charming, lovely, intelligent...AND have a great body. Believe it or not, as hard as they may be to locate, they really do exist. I myself don't run into them too often, but when I do, I relish it!

Underrated : Anekee Van der Velden. THAT'S RIGHT I SAID IT! Dispite all the flame wars and ridiculous amount of threads dedicated to trashing her, Anekee is a remarkable young lady! Yes, she is unorthodox and hard to figure out at first, but once you take the time to learn more about her, you realize that she is intelligent, sassy, sarcastic, witty, charming, lovely, and sexy. This can be figured out without a membership to her site. I find most of the flaming is due to lack of understanding. Read about her, and don't pay for her pics unless you just REALLY have to see them. I do, but then again $30 is nothing to me. I find it sad that that is the cheif reason so many dispise her. Like I said...lack of understanding. But that can be overcome. I say everyone deserves at least a second chance.

Let's see how much of my ass is remaining after everyone reads this.

Understand, it is not my intention to ignite another flame war. It is my intention to TRY...keyword "try"...and start things over and see if somehow the name  Anekee  can be refered to as any other woman's name on the BEA would be. Just another one of the lovely ladies we talk about.

Cool?

::Grabs your arm hard and pulls you aside::

Why the hell do you keep doing this?

Can't you leave well enough alone?

Isn't it enough that you bumped EVERY SINGLE ANEKEE THREAD earlier this week because you weren't the center of attention anymore and there wasn't enough crap going on?

MUST you make trouble?

I'd find and post a picture of a broken baseball bat next to a dead horse, but despite its cleverness it wouldn't be appropriate.

Let it die.

OVERRATED: This crap.

I have to agree .. it was uncalled for to bump the threads ... the attention had died down, and it doesn't show support for Anekee by bringing it back ... but ... this is also not the topic of this thread ...

so ...

Overrated:  Cappuchinos ... not a big coffee fan here ... they even suggested taxing it around here (Seattle) ..

Underrated: Hot Chocolate ... yum yum ...

Golden Eye, I am not going to stop liking Anekee for no one. It's OK for you to state who YOU like, but fuck me, right? Majority rules, is that it?

I have to put up with all these damn CHRISTINA threads. CHRISTINA, CHRISTINA, CHRISTINA, CHRISTINA!!!!!!! Yeah, I like her too, but God Damn! Same thing man, same damn thing.

That shows hypocrisy, if you ask me! I don't get you, man! At one point in time you liked her, and like a sheep you automatically buy into this fucking "FRAUD" bullshit!

Why can't you just say, "The ones that like her, cool. The ones that don't, fine." What's wrong with that idea?

As I said before, I am not TRYING to cause trouble, but I'm sick and God damn tired of this "unspoken name" shit! You can't even say her name without 3000 people getting all bitchy about it!

I haven't said anything about the fact that you guys abuse CHRISTINA's fucking name, up until now. As I said before, I like her too, I really do, but damn her threads out number all the others, except for maybe Vixen.

I just think it's a little unfair the way you decide who stays and who leaves. I like the BEA to tell you the truth. St. Stephan, Blax 12, Magic, Steveo, GALVATRON as well as MANY others are some of my favorite morphers and it is truely a joy to discuss and talk with a lot of you.

I mean it, you guys kick ass. As I get to know you more and more (for the most part) I start to like you guys that much more.

The only thing...THE ONLY THING...I hate, is this constant "Anekee bashing". I mean, other than being a little unclear about her site, what the fuck did she do to deserve this? C'mon guys, lighten the fuck up.

Does it HAVE to be this way?

If you ignored everything else I wrote, just answer me this:

"What would it take for you guys to end the Anekee bashing and just refer to her as you would anyone else on this forum?"

I DON'T WANT WAR!!  I'm trying to fix this shit! OK, no hard feelings? Do you see what I'm getting at? I apologise if I'm not using the right words to address this.

 New York Yankees Dynasty

Overrated: 1996 - 2001 Thanks to the expanded playoff system, they won pennants despite not having the best record in their league. And they often had worse records than the teams they beat in the World Series (like the Mets in 2000). Their only truly great year was 1998, when they won 114 regualr season games.

Underrated: 1936-1943 Eight years, seven pennants, six World Series titles. Stars like Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez. For the four years from 1936 to 1939, the Yankees led the league in both runs scored and fewest runs allowed. Best year: 1939, when they won 106 games and had a team ERA of 3.31 while no other team was below 4.

Overrated:  Christina. Yeah, I know you guys love her. I do to. But you have to admit that their's an unsual amount of threads dedicated to her. Does that mean she isn't lovely? Absolutely NOT! But that is not what overrated means. Overrated means that something is held with too much praise or admired too much. Christina is a cutie-pie...but very overrated in my opinion.

...in MY opinion I said. I didn't say it was carved in stone!

Underrated:  Linkin Park. I'm not quite sure what the rest of the world thinks, but from the reviews I have read and the people I talk to here and there, most people label them as mediocre. Yeah, maybe  some  of their lyrics revolve around that new age whining shit, but Chester has an aggressive voice too and their lyrics are deep, passionate, and powerful. Most everyone says  Meteora  was just  Hybrid Theory Part II  but I think their newest album was on the same track as their first while offering some new material. "Nobody's Listening" I felt was an original song...in terms of it's musical composition. I don't know, maybe I've been reading the wrong mags and talking to the wrong people?

Over-rated: "Ginyu" movies and movies that overuse wire-fu:  I am sick and tired of every fighting, martial arts, and action movie after "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" over using wire-fu.  And the stupid ass posing, and flipping that ran rampant through the Matrix movies has got to stop.  It doesn't look cool when EVERYONE does some type of flip, or backflip, or roll, or whatever.  It looks lame.  Crouch Tiger worked because it was used in moderation and flowed gently in the movie.  But seriously, in Matrix Reloaded, at the beginning where Trinity flips off the motorcyle and lands in a pose....C'mon!

A little clarification on the two above words for anyone who has questions.

"Ginyu" = A term I've used for a while.  "Ginyu" basically means any movie (or fighting scene in a movie) that is way too over the top.  This includes dumb unecessary poses, flipping, and flashy moves.  It's obviously the director's attempt to be cool, but they end up looking fuckin dumb.  The word "Ginyu" itself comes from the Dragon Ball Z character "Captain Ginyu" and his Ginyu force.  A group of five fighters who before, during, and after fights would do these dumb-ass looking poses for literally NO REASON!  Of course every character commented on how dumb they looked.

Wire-fu:  Kinda self explanitory.  Basically means any martial movie that uses wires to make the characters looks like they're flying or jump higher.

Under-rated: Martial Artist who are actors and who CAN actually fight WITHOUT wires.  Martial artist like Jet Li, Cyril Raffaelli, Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh, Mark Dacascos, Donnie Yen.  These people can fight.  These people can do unbelievable looking moves WITHOUT wire(Cyrill especially).  These people have made it their lives to practice their arts.   Sure some of the above have used wires in their movies, but not to the point where you wanted to choke yourself (I exclude "The One" from this because, to be honest, the plot called for Jet Li's Character(s) to be so fucking powerful, so it was okay).
...Don't touch me again...

I'll agree with Stider_Hein.

REALISTIC Martial Arts is FAR better!

The other stuff may be flashy and look kind of cool (based on an individual's own opinion) but the REAL thing just can't be beat.

Jet Li IS one of the best.

Overrated/Underrated Bond movie/theme

Overrated: Goldfinger...the theme is a classic, yes, but has anyone ever realized how badly it can grate on the nerves after a couple of times?  And maybe it's just me, but I found this to be one of the less entertaining Bonds, despite its hallowed status.  A lot of really great moments does not a great film make, IMO.  Although the score is really fantastic.

Underrated: Thunderball...one of the very best Bond themes, IMO, and the PERFECT match of singer (Tom Jones) and arrangement.  I also think that, despite its being a little overlong and convoluted, this is a really cool, kickass movie.  Just gotta love that opening sequence and the segue into the spectacular credits...and I should mention that this is probably THE best Bond score.  Great listening.

Also underrated: A View to a Kill.  I know it has a LOT against it, trust me.  I swear to God, Roger Moore looks younger NOW then he did in that movie.  I SWEAR it.  And Moneypenny looks like someone's grandma (and by that time, I'm sure she was many times over).  And there's a lot of other stuff against it.  It's one of there where you like it or you really don't...  I once read an online long fan essay defending this movie, and loved it.  ROCKING theme song (Duran Duran).  Also one of the very best Bond scores, it should be noted...how John Barry turns that theme into a delicate flute ballad is magic.

Bonus underrated: Timothy Dalton.  Never got half a chance.  Lacked a touch of the humor, but he was gonna make a kickass '90s Bond.  Watch The Living Daylights (another great score...the '80s were good to Bond music) again and take note.

GE, I think I'm more or less with you on your Bond selections.  Goldfinger gets to feeling like one of the Flint movies or a particularly tossed-off Roger Moore movie after a while, it gets so silly.  I've always loved Thunderball and those great lines "I'm glad I killed him."  "YOU'RE glad?"  Sorry to say, though, A View to a Kill still disappoints -- which is a shame, because I like Christopher Walken's jolly murderousness, and the music for it IS tops.  I rather wish Grace Jones had been Bond's contact, sex with Grace Jones would have killed Roger's Bond, and then for the rest of the movie it would be up to Grace to complete the mission.  And yes, Dalton was solid -- in fact, in certain limited and specific respects, he was my favorite.  I just plain LIKED him the most.  If I were M and I wanted a bright, strong, sensible, yet ultimately decent agent -- sort of what we look for nowadays in Jennifer Garner's Sydney Bristow on Alias -- I'd feel much more comfortable hiring the Dalton Bond.  He would represent my secret service just fine.
