Bumping because why not, and it popped into my head this past week.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SPECIAL ISSUE

Overrated: The Swimsuit Issue
Maybe it was a big deal back when it began, but these days you can readily find photos of lovely women wearing very little in exotic locations in many magazines, even without going to the "adult" section. Maxim and its ilk, even Esquire... And if you can't find swimsuit models online, even *with* filters in place....

Underrated: The "Where Are They Now" Issue
For some fifteen or so years, SI has been killing your summer doldrums by answering the question, "Whatever happened to that guy?" Sure, you'll have the cover star (it's Brett Favre this year - and he's staying retired), but they'll also dig deep to find other people who make you go, "Oh, THOSE guys!" It could be the two guys who ran out onto the field to chase Henry Aaron after he hit home run #715, guys like Mickey Hatcher who had really goofy trading cards, the doctors who created Gatorade, stars of a famous sports movie (Dolph "Ivan Drago" Lundgren gets a piece in this year's issue), or even former SI swimsuit models.... Fine writing, and a pleasant way to while away a summer afternoon.

Mickey Hatcher (L - 1986, R - 2015)

Since I saw the movie about the Underrated item this past weekend, this gives me an excuse to mention it....

MUSIC FESTIVAL

Overrated: Woodstock

The whole thing was even more a clusterfuck than you imagine. The promoters / backers were only in it for the money. They lied about how many people their weekend music fest would have to the people whose land they wanted to use - and how much experience they had in organizing events. Bands refused to take the stage until they got paid, which meant the promoters had to send a local banker to his bank to grab the cash (using one of the promoter's trust funds as collateral).

You know about the portable toilets, right? They also forgot to consider feeding all those attendees.... They actually ran out of food on the first day, so the promoters had to beg locals to help out....

But we all make a big deal about the incredible talent that was there, right? Well, most of the performers were nobodies at the time. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young had only one concert under their belt. And who remembers "Country Joe and the Fish" and "Sha Na Na", other than for their having been at Woodstock?

Underrated: The Harlem Cultural Festival, 1969

Well, maybe because it was a *series* of concerts and not one single event....

In the mid 60s, nightclub singer Tony Lawrence was working on community programs in Harlem. He got the idea to have a series of free events in Harlem, by Blacks and for Blacks. The second one, in 1968, featured a series of concerts with big name musicians like Count Basie, Tito Puente, and Mahalia Jackson.

The next summer, they moved the concerts to Mt Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) in the heart of Harlem. With the full support of the New York City Parks Dept, and financial backing from Maxwell House Coffee, the festival ran for six Sunday afternoons. And it was all free.

Performers included:

Stevie Wonder
The 5th Dimension
The Edwin Hawkins Singers ("O Happy Day")
Mahalia Jackson
B.B. King
Hugh Masakela
Pops Staple and the Staple Singers
David Ruffin (from The Temptations)
Gladys Knight and the Pips
Mongo "Watermelon Man" Santamaria
Sly & The Family Stone
Ray Baretto
Nina Simone

Some 300,000 people in total attended that series of concerts.

There was no violence, no one died, no one went hungry, roads were not closed, and the locals loved it. The concerts were for them, after all.

The whole thing was filmed. Some of the footage was turned into two one hour TV specials, but most of it sat in the producer's basement because he couldn't find anyone who wanted anything to do with it.

Things finally came together in 2016..... The resulting documentary premiered at Sundance in 2021....

R: Poster for the documentary, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

The country of Georgia is in the eastern shore of the Black Sea in the Caucuses area, not in Central Europe.

Yes, it's practically a Eurasian country, not a "European" country.

RentCafé Blog, 29 March 2018: "The Most Overrated and Underrated Cities in Each State"

"It’s easy to associate whole states with a single metropolis: Say New York, and most folks think of the Big Apple, just as Nevada summons images of the Las Vegas Strip. But for those who actually live in the states that contain these cities, the perception can seem a little simplistic. Why overlook value and variety elsewhere in the state and let a single place hog all the glory? After all, America is home to hundreds of charming smaller cities, and many offer costs of living far below that of major hubs. When you really ask locals, do they feel their state’s most prominent city is worthy of its hype?

We performed that experiment for you, asking residents to pick the most overrated and underappreciated cities in their own states. Our survey included more than 2,500 Americans hailing from every state in the U.S. Ready to see how their opinions compare to national reputations?"

Having lived here in Nevada for 28 years now, I think the most over rated is Reno and most under rated is Pahrump.  :)
