Get most of your news from television and all you'll know is what the anchorette info babes (& guys) spin your way! (Maddow, Costello, Sawyer, Brzezinski, Mitchell, Scarborough, etc.  )

Get most of your news from television comics (Behar, O'Donnell, Stewart, Colbert, Sharpton, Letterman, Maher, Whoopi, etc.) and all you'll know is sarcasm and mordacity.

Great stuff, JMM!

But I have to dispute the origin of "fuck". My understanding is that it is derived from the old Swedish (or is it Norwegian? I forget...) verb "fokken", which means "to strike".

Now for some additional trivia - and you can look it up.

The same person hosted the beginning and ending of the Civil War. The Battle of Bull Run was fought near the farm of Wilmer McLean. His house was used as a Confederate HQ, and suffered damage in the fighting. Soon after, he decided to move to a calmer place. He sold the farm, and moved to a small town west of Richmond, VA. - Appommattox Court House. In April of 1865, his house was chosen as the site for Lee's surrender.

Shigeyoshi Moritomo survived both the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was a kite maker by trade. In August, 1945, he was working on anti-aircraft balloons in Hiroshima. He survived that A-bomb, and managed to make his way back to his home in Nagasaki. As soon as he met his wife, he started to tell her what had happened. "A great blue light...", he began, when the second bomb went off.

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, then are dreamt of in all your philosophies."  --- Hamlet, Wm. Shakespeare

I had read that FUCK meant fornication under carnal knowledge from a old catholic vatican phrase.
"Yesterday, Reince Priebus called this whole story a 'nothing burger,'" he said. "Well these emails have turned it into an all-you-can-prosecute buffet."

Thanks for corrections. Glad to see we have some sharp-eyed fact checkers in the house. My PC comes with a spell-check not with a fact checker. Jestor may need the spell-checker installed on his. But he's right. The Rams domed stadium was built or opened in 1995 well before the St.Louis Rams won the SuperBowl.

as for the derivatives translations of FUCK, I can't say.

And the coke and TV married couples questions - I yield to the experts over at snopes.com.

As I said I used a spell-checker -
and any more corrections/challenges/debunks are more than welcome...

Don't believe everything someone e-mails you...

Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

Nope...It wasn't the Flintstones.

2. Coca-Cola was originally green.

Nope...Coke has never been green...intentionally.

5. The state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work:
Alaska

Nope...It's South Dakota.

6. The percentage of Africa that is wilderness: 28%
7. The percentage of North America that is wilderness: 38%

Who wants to live at the North Pole?  At least almost all of Africa is habitable.

9. The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour:
61,000

This does the math for how many people are in the air over the world.  North America (not just the U.S.) is 16% of the earth.  Roughly speaking, 16% of 366,000 is 59,000 not 61,000...and that's over all of North America (which has the same huge Canadian wilderness that skewed the last "fact").

10. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.

Not likely.  There were too many websites to pick one...but they all said in some form that higher zinc means lower copper and vice versa.  Also, people with retardation have very low copper and zinc levels....which probably led to someone writing this little "factoid".

12. The youngest pope was 11 years old.

Nope...This and this means that the youngest was actually 18.

13. The first novel ever written on a typewriter: Tom Sawyer.

Hey!  Got one right!

14. Those San Francisco Cable cars are the only mobile National Monuments.

Two in a row!!

15. Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history:
   Spades - King David,
   Hearts - Charlemagne,
   Clubs  - Alexander, the Great
   Diamonds - Julius Caesar

Err....not quite...don't think I give it to you.  Just two right so far.

16. 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

Uh...yeah...so?  11,111,111 x 11,111,111 = 123,456,787,654,321.  But it is three right now.

17. If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If the
horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

Nope...here's the link.

18. Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, John  Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn't added until 5 years later.

No way!  No one signed it on July 4th.  Hancock signed it on August 2nd with the rest of them.  There isn't even a "Charles Thomson" on the Declaration.  A *real* and more interesting fact is that two members of Congress at the time did not sign it.  One hoped to reconcile and rejoin Britain.  The other simply felt it was a hasty decision to write it.

20. "I am." is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

No.

21. Hershey's Kisses are called that because the machine that make them looks like it's kissing the conveyor belt.

Hershey's doesn't even know exactly why they're called "Kisses".

22. No NFL team which plays its home games in a domed stadium has ever won a Super Bowl.

Unless that big roof over St. Louis' field isn't called a "dome", that is.

Q. Most boat owners name their boats. What is the most popular boat name requested?
A. Obsession

Actually, 5 of the past 10 years, "Serenity" has been the most popular name.

Q. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find the letter "A"?
A. One thousand

Alright!  Back on the winning track!  #4 right.

Q. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common?
A. All invented by women.

Windshield wipers...yes.  Bulletproof vests...not really, but Kevlar, yes.

You better let Joseph and Gary know about laser printers and fire escapes...they're probably pretty confused, and so are their kids.

Q. What is the only food that doesn't spoil?
A. Honey

Leave it open, things will grow on it.  If you mean only if it's well sealed...well, a lot of foods won't spoil when well sealed.

Q. What trivia fact about Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny) is the most ironic?
A. He was allergic to carrots.

No he wasn't.  Read his bio.

1. In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to **82** on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, **82** tight".

Try this site.  "Tight" means soundly and predates Shakespeare by 100 years.

2. It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his
son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month or what we know today as the honeymoon.

Same site...but this time look at "honeymoon"...

3. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

Aw, man...so close!  First, no one knows the origin.  But Pints and Quarts is close...but it relates to the usage of a chalkboard to tally the drinks...not unruly patrons.

4. Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the
rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

...and then as quick as they were invented, they were all destroyed in a freak mug accident?

LMAO!  Have you ever seen one of these mugs?

Of course not...

5. In ancient England a person could not have sex unless you had consent of the King (unless you were in the Royal Family). When anyone wanted to have a  baby, they got consent of the King, the King gave them a
placard that they hung on their door while they were having sex. The placard had F.U.C.K. (Fornication Under Consent of the King) on it. Now you know where that came from.

No....geez.

6. In Scotland, a new game was invented. It was entitled Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.... and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

No.  And thiswas one of a billion sites to point it out.

Anything I deleted and didn't refute or agree with was something I could neither prove or disprove with a website.

Regarding the statue legend I heard that the person has to have ridden a horse in the military and died in service, not neccesarily in combat, of his country to merit a horse with both hooves raised. A person who rode a horse in the military and was wounded in service of his country merits a horse with one hoof raised and a person who rode a horse in the military who merits a statue for service of his country merits a horse with four hooves on the ground.

JFK and FDR who both died in service of their country don't merit horses because although they died in service of their country they didn't ride horses in the military.

There was a controversey in my town of New Orleans regarding the statue of Andrew Jackson in Jackson Square which has both hooves raised but Jackson was retired when he died. This was pointed out when the statue was built but it was so expensive that the city decided to use it anyway. In addition the history I read mentioned the technicality of there being no documentation as to whether he was ever discharged from the military and also since as today former presidents are entitled to the honorarium "Mr. President" then the statue could be correct.

The only penalty for going against the custom is that the statue would be considered tacky.

more trivia...

2002 is the first bilaterally symmetrical year since 1991.  there won't be another until 110 years from now: 2112.  from there, it's every 110 years (2222, 2332, 2442...) until 2992, then eleven years until 3003.
