The core of it is not really the "crime" of making someone white or offending the Japanese. The issue is that they passed on an easy opportunity to cast a person of Asian descent and create more opportunities for Asian actors in Hollywood, where actors of color too often get thrown in as side characters or typecast into sterotypical roles.

GitS is a popular franchise, and I personally don't see what they would have had to lose by casting a new face. I like Scarlett and I think she did a fine job as Black Widow. I've also seen her plenty, and it would have been nice to see a Japanese heroine in the lead role.

The only reason I went to the movie was to see Scarlett Johansson. I know the movie was set up in Japan now but I did not before since I'm not that knowledgeable of anime. I was curious. I've been to Japan, courtesy of the US Navy, several times especially from the 70's trough the 90's. The Japan in the movie was so far removed from reality that it truly was a different dimension. Japan is a very homogeneous society which strongly rejects foreign people especially those of dark skin. There were black characters in the movie which seemed to be normal but in Japan my black shipmates were not allowed to enter many establishments and we were refused service because we were gaijin ( foreign ). Since I'm Hispanic white, they would merely tolerate me but the minute a black sailor and I entered most establishments, we were shooed away. And I'm talking about " cosmopolitan " Tokyo. Out in the sticks, forget it. The Japanese have a Korean descent population that were born in Japan but are not citizens because of their Korean ancestry. I found the Japanese to be very two faced.
