The vast majority of Russia is in the continent of Asia and the former USSR had many countries with people who "look Asian" (e.g.  Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the like) but who are Russian by nationality. So it's not surprising.

And in the case of Japan, the Philippines and other "West-Pac" countries their fathers, Grandfathers  and in a few cases Great Grandfathers  and Americans or other "westerners"
