That she was, and her "breasts as a priority" attitude can be appreciated to this day.

Makes one wonder if there, at that time, had been a usable healthy method to make busts larger, would Jayne and other actresses and models gone for it. And how big. Would the pointy torpedo shape have been a preference...

Quote from: Entertainment News
Here is actress Jayne Mansfield pictured once again visiting breast enhancement clinic in West Hollywood. We have been pleased to report her progress as she has grown prettier and prettier, but this time she certainly has inched out a new milestone in beauty. It is expected that Jayne's latest development will prompt Marilyn Monroe to revisit the good doctor, as the women compete who is the biggest star of the silver screen. It may, however, not be a two-way battle, as there are many more ladies who are preparing themselves to steal the title.

That would have been wild for the 1950's if giant breasts implants like nowadays were available then.  :D

There were implants that were done in the 1950s. Sponge was the prefered IIRC and it was not good including infections BAD ones. in the 60s they were using direct silicone injection and silicone OIL leading to all kinds of bad side effects. the FIRST recipient of breast implants had them done in the 1962s Timmie Jean Lindsey had hers into the 80s.

Jane Russell.  Not many Hollywood stars looked this robust in 1943, when The Outlaw was released. And it was filmed a couple years earlier, when she was still in her teens! Howard Hughes knew a good thing or two when he saw them.

The risk-benefit ratio of the early procedures was most definitely not the best. That some women still wanted to go forward with it speaks volumes for their desire to have larger breasts. What is possible today is pretty amazing in retrospect.

Reportedly Hughes instructed chauffeurs who drove his actresses around to drive slowly over any bumps, so as not to jiggle the thespians' breasts and cause them to sag. 😄

One fun moment in the movie is in the scene where Jane and Marilyn sing and dance in font of a cafe. At one point they shake their busts from side to side with just drums playing in the background, and then use hands to stop their breasts from moving as the drums stop playing. Of course the actresses are wearing covering clothes, and their moves are more of a gesture of what is happening. I find it entertaining nevertheless.
