I do know of a girl who did this ... she used the clinic at
http://www.bumrungrad.com and was very pleased with the results.
When attempting to relate the cost of plastic surgery to the old adage "you get what you pay for", it's important to take a close look at what you're actually paying for. The automatic assumption would be that doctors charging less translates into lower skill levels and lower levels of medical care, but this isn't necessarily the case.
In the USA a large component of plastic surgery costs is a price premium for the doctor's malpractice insurance (which can run several hundred grand per year). In the USA another significant cost is the high labor cost of non-medically skilled support personnel (receptionists, file clerks, maintenance people, sanitation) necessary to keep a medical facility operating. It is in THESE areas that an offshore operation can achieve significant cost savings for the patient without compromising the quality of medical care. Additionally, in the USA there are significant other 'bureaucratic' costs from FDA paperwork to income tax preparation. Thailand has very different medical liability laws vastly reducing the cost of malpractice insurance, Thailand has prevailing labor rates for non-medically skilled personnel which are an order of magnitude lower than those in the USA, and Thailand has much less ponderous medical and tax laws.
Savvy investors from the USA have crunched the numbers, and are behind the construction of new state of the art offshore medical facilities. The Bumrungrad clinic was in fact rated the #1 small cap foreign stock investment last year ! While I'm sure that there are some instances where a third world location does translate into third world medical care standards, that certainly doesn't apply to the Bumrungrad clinic.
