I remember being TERRIFIED of the Yip Yip men on sesame street
HELL I REMEMBER SESAME STREET (NEVER HEARD OF THAT FUCKING PURPLE DINOSAUR)
When Saturday Morning you would wake up around 6 am and would Litteraly watch GOOD cartoons for 8 straight hours without having to use Cable chanels.
When you could still see Wylie Cyote get squished with an anvil.
Or Daffy duck getting his head blown off.
OR staying up late to watch MTV WITH MUSIC VIDEOS!
When The mornings durring the week in summer had Rude Awakening then YO MTV RAPS. Then the rest of the day would start. Pinwheel was COOL
And then you had weekday afternoon cartoons. Tailspin and rescue rangers. When your folks would actualy let a kid drive out of sight on thier bikes When you could safely wander around and WALK to the mall if you wanted or if your folks would let you.
When you could buy and play with fire crackers and not have your folks worry about blowing off your hand. And later learning how to make much bigger booms with propane. When you could take your .22 out for target practice at 12 years old and the cops wouldnt arrest you for having a dangerous weapon (Or worse)

Omigodomigodomigod ... Jackie Gleason.  I remember him because he was on opposite the original Outer Limits and it was a struggle to get my parents NOT to watch him.

And Jackie's show featured THE JUNE TAYLOR DANCERS.  A living kaleidoscope of dancers.  Surreal stuff, man.  Who needed drugs!?

I'm not probably as old as most, but I can recall looking for any glimpse of nudity on the channels in my early-mid teens.

Going from Encore to USA. Encore would have some that would pique my interest (a couple movies that come to mind are 'Blame it on Rio,' and 'Used Cars,' not to mention I finally got to see Olivia Hussey's split-second image in 'Romeo and Juliet').

I remember USA 'Up All Night' on the weekends, where it seemed hosting duties would be the tag-team of Rhonda, and then Gilbert Gottfried.

Though we had just gotten the internet at our home in February of 1998, after I had turned 18-so like any young man, I began to secretly explore the web...and lo and behold, I found myself here. Hard to believe I've been coming here for over 9 years.

Thank you for bringing up Up All Night.

And continuing on the subject of USA -- I STILL MISS NIGHT FLIGHT!  It was the coolest show back then -- and it still would be, if they brought it back.  Not just weird finds like I Was a Zombie For the FBI, but all the sexy stuff too ...

Jackie Gleason and the Honeymooners weren't watched by everyone. My parents never thought Gleason was funny, nor did my sisters.  But I did, so I had to sneak and/or steal the tv time for the show each week to watch Ralph and Ed do their thing.

One thing that's changed over the years are the cartoons.  IMHO the old Warner Brothers toons from the '30's til they ended somewhere in the 70's were the best - fully drawn with complete body movements and with adult dialogue. Yeah, everybody got blown up a lot but that was for the kiddies mostly.  The dialogue was done by grown up men on behalf of other grown up men.  Most women never thought they were funny, but guys did.  One of the reasons you could never go to a movie theatre downtown - where they all usta be - without seeing a WB cartoon before the featured special was that it was expected by the audience.  It was sometimes better than the full feature!

And by the way, has anybody noticed that these terrible cine-multiplex mall movie threatres are really bad at sound? First, they blast it at you and every seat is a short seat - close to the screen - so you can't get away from the assault on your ears!  Then, most of the modern producers and directors hafta put in all those overblown sound effects which reverberate around like an atomic bomb going off in a canyon!  A guy hits another guy and you hear it like it was a locomotive falling on top of a skyscraper?

Nice ta see this thread brought back to life.   Is JustMeMike around anymore?

Get most of your news from television and all you'll know is what the anchorette info babes (& guys) spin your way! (Maddow, Costello, Sawyer, Brzezinski, Mitchell, Scarborough, etc.  )

Get most of your news from television comics (Behar, O'Donnell, Stewart, Colbert, Sharpton, Letterman, Maher, Whoopi, etc.) and all you'll know is sarcasm and mordacity.

Thanks for reading this post - It was about a time long ago and it seems that the last time I opened this thread was also long ago.

I remember the Honeymooners from the re-runs. I thought so then and I still think they were extremely funny - granted everyone doesn't like them, but that's to be expected.

People rarely agree about anything.

As for what I'm doing these days - still traveling when I can, still appreciating art and movies, and still doing my DVD review column. My partner at Also On Video, Al-The-Editor, passed away more than a year ago, and he is missed by many people around this site.

I am on my own as far as producing the column. AoV is now called JustMeMike's New Also on Video . Check it out if you like.

JustMeMike

PS: I too miss the cartoons  at the movies.

This is the greatest thread ever.

Yes, Jackie Gleason, Red Kearney.

And the old Bazooka Joe bubble gum, before they redesigned the characters.

Uncle Scrooge comic books.

And how about those little 45 records made of red plastic?

And yes, Saturday mornings where every network was packed with cartoons and "The Banana Splits."
