A very good question. If Google is smart, they will leave YouTube the hell alone. No one is really being harmed from having these videos available up "for free" on YouTube. Otherwise, can you tell me where I could BUY a copy of that (or any other) music video? Are you telling me that Comedy Central is losing soooo much money, just because fans are placing clips of "The Daily Show" or "The Colbert Report" or "Chappelle's Show" on YouTube for the cable-less millions worldwide to enjoy? Indeed, Stephen Colbert recently finished a Green-Screen Challenge in which he invited YouTubers to make a video with some of his footage...he gets it. The first season of "Chappelle's Show" on DVD was the fastest-selling DVD set of a television program in history, mainly because fans saw the good old clips on YouTube and wanted the DVDs for themselves. (In other words, they acted like a sampler for the good stuff.) And the guys behind "South Park" are on record as saying that they don't really mind their episodes being traded since they are rich as it is, and as long as their show is being watched, they don't care. They get it. But does Viacom get it?

If the RIAA or MPAA take GoogleTube to court, that will definitely be the killing of the golden goose (maybe that's why the three co-founders of YouTube and the company were paid in Google stock and not cold hard cash?).

In any event, I advise everyone to go out and buy a 250 GB hard disk and download what you want from YouTube while you can. Google may get a case of the stupids and clamp down on that sort of thing, and it will be Napster, part 2.
