PeEVEed page 13
« on: June 13, 2002, 05:50:29 PM »
It was uploaded last night, but the forum here didn't seem to be working.  I also added the missing 15th page of Varchild's Earthfall.

About the PeEVEed page, I'm not sure if Wolf was trying to be funny with the name of Eve's boss or not...  He writes the dialog, I just letter it.

Nice work. The transition from on the street to in the elevator took me a bit by surprise, but it wasn't a bad thing (and I can't imagine there's really any reason to do it another way, would just waste panels I just wasn't expecting to leap indoors so fast). The art's nice. And I don't know about the name either. Is he British? Those Englandians have some funny names you know. And they're spelled so absolutely bizarre. Here let me track down my favorite (it's impossible to remember so I kept it in a text file).
In reply to:

Admittedly, some surnames are a little out of the way, such as Featherstonehaugh (pronounced "Fanshaw") or Farquaharson (pr. "Farson"),

Featherstonehaugh is pronounced fanshaw?!?
I'd have guessed feather-stone-haw. Then again Charles is a name derived from Churl = Peasant/serf/servant, so Prince Charles is literally "Prince Serf". Hehe, gotta love our language. It's so quirky.

Anyway, is he British? If not then maybe he just likes weird names.

As always LF you continue to delight the senses with your artistic talents. I agree with Seelie about being caught slightly off-guard by the sudden transition but it was still good.

The way Eve is being cast as the unlucky girl and the fact she constantly makes reference to her breasts is all good as well

Maybe a sort of "Narrators box" in the corner saying "Finally arriving at work..."

Cause it threw me also.

The bosses name is "Haversnatch".... just say that over and over slowly.  I'm not sure if Wolf thinks porno names are needed or not.  He doesn't visit this forum, so I'll have to ask him about it.  He's not British, he lived in New Orleans until last year at some point.

Originally there would have been another page between 12 and 13, but it would have had Eve getting cat-calls from a group of contruction workers.  It was cut because the comic is running long.  But it would have just ended with her storming out of view.

I'll mention it to Wolf.  I have most of the power, considering I both draw and letter the pages, I don't want to abuse it by changing something without talking about it with him.

On the next page, you might have an idea of what's going on with Sena after that BE part.  She wants to try to arrange it so that Eve is her master...  You also see a photograph of Eve's busty aunt, Juno.

Charles=Churl

This is a joke, right? Everybody knows that Charles comes from the Roman name Carolinius and means "courage".

No it's not a joke. Those who make books of names tend to look very hard and find the most helpful and happy versions of name etymologies and ignore the realities of linguistics. Look here for a good etymology site. Do a search on  "+charles +churl" and you'll find longer versions of the following:

In reply to:

The words churl and churlish ultimately derive from a Germanic root, karlaz,  meaning "man".  That would make the names Charles and Carl, among others, relatives of churl, though the meanings of the former retained the "man" meaning while churl diverged quite a bit.

In reply to:

What is the origin and history of the word rube?
This word is simply a shortened form of Reuben.  It is first recorded in the form Reub in 1896.  By 1899 it appears in Tramping with Tramps by J. Flynt: "Rube, a "hoosier" or "farmer".  It is presumed that Reuben was a common name among farmers and rural folk and that it was taken (and shortened) to refer to such folk in general.  The word's meaning progressed to "naive or simple rural person" as farmers and such were perceived by city folk as uneducated and unrefined.  In England, the name Churl (a variant of Charles) was much used by our country cousins of yore.  Thus, for similar reasons to rube, the word churl came to mean "a clod-hopping country bumpkin"

So I was taking a little liberty since the words are better described a siblings than children one of the other. But no, it was not a joke.

I always thought the names were a bit odd (ever since I read the plot).  But in Wolfman's defense coming up with Japanese names could be a pain in the ass for Gaijin like us. that and Japanese and Chinese names if read literally can sound prety funny like Ricefield-Iron ( I think that's how you spell Taira but I'm not sure)

But... people have strange names in most anime.  I can think of at least Trunks, Bra, Lunch, Mr. Satan, and Garlic Jr from Dragonball Z alone.

If I remember correctly, I named Eve and Mika.  Wolf has named everyone else so far.  Now that I think about it, I expect the name of the boss was intentional.
