Hey tene, I go with the 10% figure myself, and there is a precident for it.  Long time ago R&D used to be an E-mail magazine, and would list a statistic in the bottom saying 10% or readers were females.  Now whether that was truth or fantasy .. shrug.  If I was to honestly guess, I think a 10% female readership is a little high, maybe 7 or 8%.
Personally my rule of thumb is for anyone who posts, there are 10 like-minded individuals who don't post (maybe I should call it rule of ass, since that's where I pulled it from).  So just count up the female posters and multiply by 10.

I should point out that contrary to popular belief (or unpopular belief) my figure was *not* based on a random/ prime number generator. Rather using stats methods taught to me by a venerable master high in the sky mountains of fleet street.

I took a random stratified survey (having done prior research gaining the relevant percentage break down)...blah blah blah

It seemed like a better idea earlier on...
