My alma mater is York University in Toronto. My first year there (1978-79) I was a commuter student. But I moved into residence the following year.
York (at least at that time) had this pseudo-cash system called 'scrip'. To describe it to other Canadians, it's like having Canadian Tire money. To anyone else, I guess you could say it's like Monopoly money. You got a fixed amount of scrip to spend during the year (which you paid for when you signed up for residence). When you did the math, it was easy to see that anyone with a healthy appetite would run out of scrip before the end of the year. If you wanted seconds, you paid for it. Some folks sold off their scrip early in the year for 5-10 points off. By the end of the year, you could find students selling scrip at 30-40 points off. Wouldn't surprise me if those folks selling at 5-10% off at first ended up buying back at 30-40% later on.

Anyway, the "freshman 15" actually helped me. I was already at (or close to) my present height of 5'10". But my body weight was only 135. I gained exactly 12 lbs in the first 2 weeks of living on campus. And my weight stayed pegged at 147 for many years afterwards.
This is WAY off topic but... any other Yorkies here? Actually, nevermind that... I'll ask in the Off Topic section.
