Anime Inflato-Boobs(tm)

Has anyone noticed the thing I like to call "Inflato-Boobs" in anime?

I just purchased Evangelion Platinum edition this weekend (it was on sale at Best Buy), and was reminded of this.

Basically what this means, is that a female anime characters breasts will change size depending on the scene.

I am quite sure this happens in many other series, but the worst culprit of this seems to be Asuka. She goes from nearly totaly flat in her first appearence, to totally stacked just a few episodes later, flat again, and then stacked again.

This is more than be explained by simple shot angles.

Has anyone else noticed this in other series?

And finally, to end this post on a high note, I will quote Kaji:

This happens mainly due to the artist not being able to keep the character totally on model from scene to scene. As a comic artist, I know it's hard to keep the character completely on proportion within each frame, especially while trying to meet a deadline.

Also, this happens because a few different animation crews are working on the same series/episode. Hench why some of the times, the art style/animation seems to change just a bit from scene to scene.

Fair enough, but in the case of Asuka in Evangelion, this is blatant. It literally changes from scene to scene, and only when it suits the scene.

When she was first introduced, she was relatively flat.

When Shinji nearly kissed her in her **82**, she was quite busty.

When she was explaining thermal expansion, she was quite busty again. When they would go into battle, she was normal.

As far as I could tell, it was only when it suited the scene, not different animation crews.

Yes, that is my opinion as well. Any time where it seems Shinji and Asuka were going to share an intimate moment did her breasts seem quite larger then normal. I think I'll watch the movie sometime tomorrow to see if it takes place in there as well.

Edit: Another Anime that seems to show this occurance is Ghost in the Shell. However, I can agree that the artist's perception on the characters movement could alter the drawing in that series.

Off the top of my head I know in Duel Masters Mimi's boobs seem to change size in some shots...

As far as literal inflato-boobs go there's a scene in Negima where the main girl's boobs magically grow.

I too have noticed such! I guess alot depends on who is drawing the particular sequence. From what I gather it is actually quite commen for a set of different artist to work on the animation for a show. A good example of this is in Naruto during the big epic fight scenes.
They actually change the entire animation style to compensate for the camera angles.
In the case of girls getting bustier... It probably is just a matter of a particular artist animation style.

Hmm...Busty in casual...but flat in battle...

Call me crazy, but wouldn't any girl loose a little size under chunky high tech body armor? At least in a series going for a modicum of realism.

A lot of current anime seems to make keeping jiggling breasts unfettered the golden rule.

But yeah, in Asuka's case I can see that particular suit acting like a minimizer.

But, yeah, I agree with Strider. It's notoriously difficult to keep a girl's figure exactly the same every time you draw her, especially on a deadline.

If you notice in Naruto Tsuname's breasts change size too. Sadly they seem to be getting smaller every episode.

In Fred Perry's Gold Digger comic, Cheetah, while usually busty, would become satisfyingly massive once every few comics.

After a lengthy search of Being Upfront, an anime guide to bosomy women, google, and the big bust anime list,
I couldn't find the title but there's one where they change artists halfway through the series and the flat chested star gains a staggering number of cup sizes.

I think I know which series you're talking about, Tendrak. It was Burst Angel if I'm not mistaken. That's definitely the series. BTW, thanks for sharing those images of Brit by Fred Perry. Spekaing of him, I'm going to this year's Project A-Kon and I hope to request him again this year. Expect a big update on my blog after the con.

There are a great many series where "not-really-BE" bust drawing goes WELL beyond the limits of simple inconsistency of character model or change in artist. There are just some animating crews who are openly ecchi. Some good examples are:

Hellsing: Main female protagonist Celes Victoria, after being vampirized, LITERALLY gains at least one cup size for every one of the 13 ep.s. She starts out flat-as-a-board in episode one as a normal Human and by the latter eps. she's stretching tight uniforms and slinky blouses to their limits.

Saber Marrionette J: This one is also really noticeable and focuses mainly on female protagonist Lime. She starts out COMPLETELY flat, you see her without clothes on at the very start, and slowly gains chest mass as the series advances. By the time you once again see her sans her baggy over-shirt thing near the end she's at least a bouncy D or E-Cup. In the interim series J-Again and the sequel J-To-X she gets ever larger.

Love Hina and Ai Yori Aoshi: For series in the last few years (relatively speaking) these romanti-come-dramadies have some damn inconsistent character designs, especially when compared to their original manga-ka's work. Say what you want about Love Hina's Ken Akamatsu, he manages to keep his girls the exact same size when he himself is drawing them. In the anime for these two series, girls', especially the two respective female protagonists Naru and Aoi, chests inflate and deflate depending on the situation within the SAME epsiodes, sometimes within the span of five minutes. The girls could go around mostly flat for awhile, but throw them in a towel or an ecchi/romantic situation and suddenly, "Instant D-Cups".

One Piece (and to a lesser degree Bleach): Now I know we have some One Piece fans here, but Nami, as well as several other female characters, suffer from "miracle puberty". In reality it simply comes from manga-ka Oda's tendency to further exaggerate his designs as the series progresses. Nami begins a relatively realistically proportioned girl, and then slowly begins to inflate up top and bottom as her waist vanishes into thin air. As far as I can tell, this trend is still continuing today. Bleach's Orihime exhibits a similar tendency, though not nearly as blatant.

In Japanese art you will also see size changes as a way of expressing emotions, you will often see super-deform used this way.

Hence attraction or relative sexiness is depicted by a change in secondary characteristics.

Already mentioned briefly; Burst Angel was pretty absurd with this. Has been mentioned as being influenced by Eva in the past, I don't buy that, although both have red haired girls with inflato-boobs. Meg's breast growth is probably the best I've seen in anime (see attached image). Another character Sei, had pretty huge boobs, but then again she was always pretty big. Meg is almost flat at times, then her boobs inflate bigger and bigger each ep until around ep 16 or so where they're the size of her head. They shrink somewhat, but still stay pretty huge for the rest of the series after that. Looks like a animator change was the reason; her face looks noticably different at times which points to that probably being the cause.

Especially the Burst Angel thing, its faaaaaar too blatant to be incinsistancy between artists.

So I've had a chance to see most of the
episodes of Burst Angel's first season now.
I don't know if another one is coming.

Meg (the redhead) is the primary target of
the B.E. and Sei their boss recieves healthy
dosage of it too.

They start growing in
episode 9, reach their peak in 15,
then subtley shrank in 17 and 18 with
a final drastic shrinking in 19.
Sad, sad.

In episode 9 they actually said
that Meg has a large appetite that
directs all to her breasts.
It might explain why in episode 9
they were bigger in the middle of the
episode, smaller at the end, then big again in 10.

I have so much on my plate right
now but I'd love to do a Burst Angel B.E.
comic where Joe
(the main character and flattest girl) experiences
thrice the effect of her team mates.

This kind of "inflato" action seems to happen in many other animes. I suspect it's due in part to that each episode can be drawn by different artists (the differences are really obvious sometimes) and different artists tend to want their babes to look fuller or smaller.

I can only think of one anime where the art is consistent throughout (granted I have not watched every anime there ever was) and that is Grenadier. I thoroughly enjoyed that anime both for the boobs, consistency and light-hearted story that has the right mix of fan-service and action.

Needless to say, Tendo Rushuna (the heroine of Grenadier) became my all time favourite anime babe. If she's this size at 16, wow....how large would she be if there was a second season with her at 20?
