Tomb Raider - not worth seeing
« on: June 13, 2001, 04:48:00 PM »
I just saw this movie earlier tonight, at a free preview, but I was really disappointed with it, not only because of the insufficiency of the breast scenes but also because of the less important factors.

Don't get me wrong - Angelina Jolie looked great, but her bare breasts could be seen only in a short back-shot in the shower, and she jiggled in her T-shirt for only a few seconds (same scene as in the commercials).  And her character, like all the others in the film, was boring, and the plot and action  were 100% conventional.  The fight scenes were a real letdown and appeared to be choreographed by somebody who had never heard of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or The Matrix.

TL(and anyone else interested), this comes straight from an E! Online Q&A with Angelina Jolie:

E!Online: Her breasts are the stuff of legends. How did it feel stepping into her bra?

A.J.: It's amazing how fascinated people are with breasts. She's Lara Croft, you know what I mean? Batman has his shit. It's part of her character. I'll make it real simple: I'm a 36C. In the game, she's a 36DD. In the movie, she's a 36D. So, we split the difference and made her more athletic. My waist is much bigger than hers. She's, like, a 24, and I'm a 28. Her hips are very curvaceous; mine are more boyish. So, with me playing her, she's much more athletic and has smaller breasts.

E!Online: I doubt anyone will complain.

A.J.:Padded bras work wonders.

I gotta agree with Bob, though.  The difference being, I paid for the stinker.  Aside from the distinct lack of good breast shots (clothed or otherwise), it's entirely cookie cutter.

Not that it surprised me, but why is it so hard for Hollywood to throw a curveball, once in a while?

Well...I did hear a woman saying that the movie was hard to follow as she left the theatre, so maybe I have my answer.

THANK YOU!

This thing has been billed as "THE action movie of 2001".

Rather it appears that its yet another video game to movie loser.  When they discussed that AJ had a padded bra for the roll my interest waned.  Now, if they had cast Petra Veriak! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Can Petra act, Bad? Unfortunately, I suspect not, or they might have asked her.

I'm not surprised by the bad reviews the movie's getting. Never mind the bad rep game-based movies have (very well earned, yes), the games themselves are little more than pure sex advertising. What's there to make a movie out of?

The makers of Charlie's Angels also had little to work with, but they came up with a really clever send up of the TV series.

Let me put it another way:  I liked it a lot even though it had zilch breast content.

Zorlond - She can act good enough to be Laura Croft!

Besides that, yup she does act and has had both TV and movie roles.  Is she going to get an oscar?  I think not, but Laura Croft is played for the visual not lines.  Otherwise they wouldn't have put AJ in a padded bra.

True.

Though, now that I think about it, Jolie was probably also hired because her lips and Croft's are very similar.

Let's face facts.  It's "Hudson Hawk" all over again.

Never saw Hudson Hawk, but anyhoo. Just got back from the movie theater (no, I did not go to see Tomb Raider, I saw Atlantis), and noticed several of the pre-movie slides were about TR. One that caught my eye: AJ apparently did a lot of her own stunts in the film (hey, great way to get the studio to pay for her aerobics, military training, and martial arts classes! Nice one Angelina!). Unfortunately, it apparently meant facing a stunt gone bad. Minor burns and a torn ankle ligament.

Too bad she had to sacrifice for a bad movie.

Never said I didn't like Hudson Hawk, I in fact do.  What I was trying to get at is that the plots are similar.  X person must retrieve Y item(s) but Z bad guys get them and try to take over the world only to have bad things happen to them as a result.  Truth is there are any number of other movie I could have compared it to (Raiders of the lost Ark maybe?   ) but much like Tomb Raider, Hudson Hawk was expected to be more than it was and as a result it flopped.  I'm not saying Tomb Raider will folp but everyone seems to agree that it wasn't worthy of its own hype and that they needed to realize that one of the primary draws (or would that be two of the...   ) of Tomb Raider are Lara's breasts.  It is doubious that TR would be the phenomenon it is today with out those "DD's".  If anything what they needed to do was compensate for AJ's larger waist by makeing her chest even bigger (double F's anyone?)not smaller, as they opted to do.  Oh well I just wish they had gone with plan B and done a Computer Animated Tomb Raider movie.  That could have been awesome.

Later
Matt

Ok Ok Ok. First of all, before I get nasty...I did enjoy this movie. Of course I realllllly enjoyed Angelina as Ms. Croft. Anyway, let's start with the negatives...

1. The climax is simply ANTI-Climactic. The villian doesn't get nearly enough mental or bodily harm done to him to leave you satisfied and the whole "Clock of Ages" power isn't exactly applied in an exciting way. 2. The large machine at the end is just ridiculous for one reason...supposedly this is where an artifact was hidden in some 5000 years ago...um, where the hell did people 5000 years ago get all the damn steel Rivets to build this monstrous machine?! 3. How did Lara know what to do with the artifact at the end...we never see her figuring this stuff out. 4. Why the hell aren't Lara's visions of Tibetan children giving her messages ever explained? And of course 5. She's in the cold, open arctic tundra with her coat open with a tight shirt on...no nipplage. COME ON! She even gets out of the water at one point with the same shirt...nothing. At least put some fake nips in that padded bra for us. Oh, the humanity!

Positives: Angelina is simply amazing with her expressions and body language. You don't even need to see below her neck, down to the padded bra to get turned on. She works her eyebrows and gazes perfectly, silently saying "Yes chaps, I know you all want to #*ck me". Yes, Lara...um, I mean Angelina...we do. She was brilliantly cast for this. Great confidence, great presence, great english accent. She holds the film together.

Someone mentioned the fight sequences weren't any good. I disagree. I was glad they didn't go the Matrix route...it's been done and copying those type of effects is just plain dumb. Tomb Raider's fight sequences were exciting, original, witty and let's face it...it's just plain cool to see a sexy woman/actress pull it off. At the end of each fight, people in the theater were like "Yeahhhh baby". (not the Austin Power's voice)

So, see this movie as if you were playing the game, otherwise you'll find it terribly silly and a bit far fetched. The plot isn't too great, so just see it for the fun, action and an alluring performance from Mrs. Billy Bob.

I love her...as Lara of course.
