As far as Video Game to Movie Adaptations go, this was by far the best of that bunch......
As far as Blockbuster of the summer of 2001.....uumm....there will be something else.....The film was good, wasnt the absolute worst, but wasnt the absolute greatest.
I do think Angelina Jolie did play a good part though, better than i expected!

My two cents!

Okay, I feel it's my duty as someone who has played the game and seen the movie to comment on this.

1. The action scenes were fairly faithful the style used in the games. That having been said, there is a near complete lack of actual fatalities in the movie. In the game Croft goes around blowing things away with dual .45's, none of this hand to hand BS. Also, the baddies were all human. Anyone who has played the game knows that most of the time you fight animals.

2. I don't think the director has played the game, or very many of the developpment crew for that matter. The fact that AJ did not wear the classic green top/tan shorts seems to indicate a lack of knowledge on someone's part. LC traditional raiding garb is classic

3. LC is a very similar character to Indian Jones. At any point in the movie did you notice a trap being sprung? Not really.

4. Although ideally we would want an actress who looks exactly like LC, that would be nearly impossible given the character's dimensions.

5. Of all the characters in the movie, the shotgun toting butler was the coolest!

Anyways, that's my rant. and by the way Tifa Lover, not all movies based on computer games suck. Let's not forget Final Fantasy. I'm sure you cummed all over the back of the guy in front of you when you saw that trailor.

Crown King, I have one little comment-

The Final Fantasy movie cannot be considered to be a movie based off of a video game.  It (as far as I can tell) shares nothing with any of the games, not even characters or really even any of the worlds.

In my opinion (without seeing more than the trailer) it's just a CG movie that Square made and they attached the "Final Fantasy" name just to make sure it would be noticed by gamers.

Also, I thought that the first Mortal Kombat movie was okay, it wasn't great, just okay.

LF: You could say it was just another installment of final fantasy as it bears no relation to the rest of the series.

Well unless every 2 minutes the heroes are attacked by monsters.

ahhhh, touche light foot but as PF pointed out Final Fantasys have no relation to each other. Although I think any of the FF's would serve as a great basis for a movie, the one that they did make looks very good. Although it does seem to lake the magic component of the FF series...

Hey, lets not forget Street Fighter.  Quite possibly Van Dam's greatest performance.

As for as T.R. goes, it's close to Mortal Kombat as the best video game adaption, right now. But I'm sure F.F. is going to blow that away.

Or at least, lets all hope.

Ah-ah, BUT there was some connection for the games.  They all have different characters, live in different times and worlds- BUT they play in a similar way or use similar rules in their worlds.

They share certain items and item names, fighting is similar, similar magic spells, similar graphics (as much as can be similar when they have appeared on 3 different systems), and they all have a character named "Cid".  You can play them and know that they are Final Fantasy.

My point is that a movie can't have any of these things, so at what point can it be considered "unrelated"?  It seems to share no aspect of the games.  None of the characters, none of the worlds, it seems to have no magic, and it cannot share any of the gameplay.

How can it be "Final Fantasy"?  How is this any different from Square making a CG movie and putting the FF name on for no reason?

I haven't really seen the movie yet, and this is only my opinion.  I'm not claiming that it's going to be a bad movie, just that there is no reason for it to be called "Final Fantasy".  ...Maybe I'm also a little upset that Tifa won't be in it

Just got back from watching Tomb Raider. Frankly, I enjoyed it. Of course, I have been accused of having a low taste in movies.

Sure, it could have been better from a breast perspective. And gotten an R rating, which I don't think they were aiming for. The plot, such as it was, was moronic. (If daddy had REALLY wanted to make sure the triangle couldn't be re-united, he would have simply smashed the stupid clock!) But Jolie is a babe, there was plenty of action, and as a battlebot builder I appreciated the gratuitous bot.

Just my opinion, but the best animated
movie adaptation of a video game, from our perspective, has got to be the Fatal Fury movies, with the "dual independent suspension" ninja girl, Mai. Best live action video game adaptation would be Mortal Kombat One, hands down. (Two sucked big time!) What I'm really waiting for is the animated version of Fred Perry's Gold Digger.

I would have to disagree with animated game adaption.  I think Steet Fighter the Movie kicked some serious ass.

I agree that T.R. couldn't be shooting for an R rating.  How many [censored] play Tomb Raider that are under 17.  A lot.  So by making it pg-13 (and thus ruining any chance to see the front side of a naked Laura) there were able to retain the targer audience.

However, we can hope that floating around there's an uncut version somewhere.  Maybe DVD.

Hey guys, couldn't help but share my opinion on all of this.
Ok, Fatal Fury the motion picture simply rocked. So did SF2 the ANIMATED movie.
Tomb Raider? Looks like a renter. Can't say I can really make a statement about it since I haven't seen it yet. However, the idea of Lara Croft running around with the same proportions that she has in the game (though most of us certainly wouldn;t mind) is just a bit unrealistic. Gotta remember that there's a whole crowd of non-huge breast people out there that the marketers have to take into consideration. And let's not forget that TR was not really an action game in the first place, so it's kind of unrealistic for them to try to make it into a movie with ridiculous action scenes. Essentially, as has already been pointed out, I think it's really just Indiana Jones with a big-titted girl as the lead.
Final Fantasy? Looks purely spectacular in my opinion. However anyone who says that Square could have called it anything else and it would have been the same movie, is a little off i think. The Final Fantasy series did have (or at least in the later numbers) a larger theme to them that ran through all the games. They were each billed as an ultimate fantasy adventure about life, with their own unique cast of characters. Though they took on different degrees of this (7 being probably the best example), they all revolved around the theme of life in its many forms, as does the movie. If you've read any of the interviews with the creators of the film, then you know that this is something that they really stressed in the creation of the movie. This is something that is not found in all RPGs, nor in any old CG movie. whew! ok I've said my bit

Does anyone know who's doing to music for Final Fantasy.  I hope it's the same guy who does it for the games.  What's his name,  Imato Youshika?  Something like that.

His name is Nobuo Uematsu. I have no idea if he did the music for the film though. I kinda doubt that he did... then again you never know.

Yeah, Nobuo kicks ass...

LF, there is a Cid in FF the movie

Oh, and it seems to me that the general trend seems to be away from fantasy and more to the future (ie, FF7,8)

Sure, spells don't abound, but that has yet to be established...

My god, there's a  thought, an FF Angelina Jolie. .. .. ..
Mind you, she'd find it really difficult doing all the running, and gymnastics, and fight scenes .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
Daamn, this could have been a very funny spoof. With huge breasts. damn again.

PS, one final thought - in a more twisted world, instead of using a famous actress maybe they could have found a nice unknown and used some of the left-over cash to pay for the boob op.

one tantalising thing in the run-up to this movie was the intriguing possibility that just maybe, MAYBE, AJ would be wacky enough to get them enlarged for real.
