In Search of the Perfect Breast: The Battle Over Implants
By Steve Sullivan
(Part 6)
After the exam, I spoke with the female radiologist who had conducted the exam. She declared emphatically that “there are definitely no implants” in Joyce’s breasts. How could such spectacular growth in breast size occur in later years by natural means? The radiologist confessed to being perplexed. “This kind of growth can happen naturally over time. But I’ve never seen anything quite like this myself.”
Chatting after leaving the medical center, Joyce admitted to bafflement herself. Not only have her breasts grown from a 36-DD to a 38-EEE cup since the early 1970s, “but they’ve gotten even bigger in the last four or five years. There are vests that I bought a few years ago that fit perfectly then, but now I can’t do the buttons because my breasts are bigger. I can’t understand it, because I’m not on the pill, I’m not taking estrogen, or doing anything else that might cause this to happen.”
It was during a quiet lunch following the exam that Joyce made clear how much the skepticism of fans has troubled her. “It’s like you’re guilty before being proven innocent,” she declared “When people assume that I’ve had implants even after I’ve said I’m natural, they’re questioning my truthfulness. And that hurts very much.
“It seems that people don’t care whether you’re real or not. So I find myself competing with all these 20- and 25-year-old girls with huge implants who are so blatantly phony that it’s almost funny. And I don’t get any credit for being natural.” As an example, she noted the featured role that stripper Pandora Peaks (with spectacular 44-H silicone-boosted breasts that appear even more astounding compared with her tiny waist) landed in the Demi Moore film “Striptease.” “I later learned that they wanted me to try out for the part, but they couldn’t locate my agent in time. It would have been a wonderful opportunity. And Playboy came out with the ‘Voluptuous Vixens’ videos that would have been perfect for me, but instead they used all these silicone-inflated girls.”
As she plunged deeper into the subject, the words and emotions poured out. “First people attack my appearance, saying I look too extreme to get legitimate roles in mainstream movies. Then they attack my integrity, my heart and soul, basically accusing me of being a liar. I’m a sensitive person, and maybe I shouldn’t care, but I do.” She paused while wiping away a few tears. “I have principles and standards, but because I don’t have implants and I won’t **82** with anyone to get a job, I’m at a professional standstill.”
“Why do people look at all these women with ridiculously large implants and compare them with someone like me who’s never done anything artificial with her body? I got back in this business to show everyone what a woman with large natural breasts looks like, but people don’t seem to care. They’ll look at a model with implants that stick out about a yard without any sag or movement, and say, ‘her breasts are bigger and firmer, so they’re better.’ Mine were a God-given gift and hers were bought off the rack, yet people react as if they’re the same – or just assume that mine are phony, too. It isn’t right.”
Just the idea of breast surgery spooks Joyce. “People who really know me just laugh when someone suggests that I’ve had implants,” she remarks. “I’m terrified at being cut open. That’s why I would never have a breast reduction. I’m even scared of having needles put in my arms. I don’t want anything artificial in my body. I wouldn’t endanger my health for anything. If I hadn’t developed large breasts naturally, I wouldn’t have had implants even then. Sometimes I wish they were smaller – I don’t like being leered at.”
She paused thoughtfully. “Sometimes I wish that I had been born 20 years earlier. In the 1950s and ‘60s, people appreciated classic glamour. You could be nude without being lewd – classiness and sex appeal could co-exist. That almost seems impossible now.”
The implant allegations simply add to the difficulties that Joyce’s remarkable body have already created for her. “I’m a modest person by nature, and dress conservatively so I won’t be noticed that much when I’m not working. Yet every day, when I’m walking down the street or in the grocery store, people will look at me with a kind of disdain, almost assuming that I’m a slut just because I have large breasts. And I’m incredibly conservative sexually. I was married once, and had just one serious boyfriend at a time when I’ve been single. I don’t **82** around at all! That’s just not me. Yet when people see me and learn that I’ve posed for men’s magazines, they make all these ugly assumptions.
“I’ve always tried to make my layouts as classy and glamorous as possible. But the photographer is always pushing for more explicit poses, and sometimes there are poses that show more than I’d like. I always cringe when I see those pictures.”
