In Search of the Perfect Breast: The Battle Over Implants
By Steve Sullivan
(Part 7)
Because the UCLA mammogram had left some unanswered questions about Joyce’s remarkable breast growth, she suggested a second exam the following day. To ensure that there would be no possibility of a set-up (I wouldn’t have dared suggest such a thing myself), she insisted that I go through the Yellow Pages for a doctor in her residential area who could do the tests. I picked one out at random, and we made an appointment for the next day with an obstetrics/gynecology physician, Dr. David A. Kline, in Los Angeles.
This time I was able to accompany Joyce not only to a pre-exam discussion with the doctor, but also into the exam room itself. After she explained her mysterious breast growth, Dr. Kline expanded upon what the UCLA radiologist had told us. Natural breast growth can occur in later years, he explained, sometimes because of an unusual balance of hormones and estrogen in the blood, and sometimes for other reasons— estrogen being the key element that causes mammary development. “High estrogen levels can cause breast growth in a maturing woman through reduced progestine production,” he told us. “Progestine inhibits estrogen, so when the progestine level is low, estrogen is uninhibited in the body.” Another possible explanation is that Joyce’s breast receptors may be highly sensitive to estrogen, so that even normal levels of estrogen can stimulate unusual breast growth.
Initially, when changing into her obligatory hospital gown in the exam room before the doctor entered, she shyly asked me to turn my back. But – determined to leave no doubt whatsoever that her magnificent form is a wonder of nature without any human intervention – she lowered her gown at one point while on the examination table to demonstrate what her bare breasts look like while lying on her back. Indeed, they flop over to each side of her body in a manner that would be impossible for breast implants. I left the room when the time came for the exam.
