High-speed writing contest?
« on: November 27, 2006, 01:08:32 PM »
Hey everyone

Would anyone (and the BEA itself) be interested in a high-speed story writing contest? Basically you have 24 hours to come up with the best BE story you can.

I guess there needs to be some restrictions (length, originality, etc) but I wonder how many would be writers out there have a story in their heads, and maybe a sprint like contest would help them get it written down?

The great folks of the BEA can vote on the winner & there could be prizes (one day free memberships, gloating, points like worth1000.com, the right to choose the next story theme).

My hometown has this contest every year where a bunch of writers get holed up in a diner and write for 24 hours straight. Best story wins some cash. Would that work here?

And hey, if this idea has been floated around, I apologize (must have missed in searching in the archives).

Peace out.

That's a great idea.  Though it might result in a flood of short stories at the (prohibited O).

I'll do one, if I can start another day.

Sounds like a great idea to me.  Would the diner be a virtual diner, or could we actually get greasy eggs and that waitress that Grim drew once?

Speaking as a wanna-bee, I know that I respond well to structure, so a speed write would be all good for me.

Count me in!

A day seems a bit too short of a time scale, a week would probably work better.

Benji -
I respectfully disagree.  A day would be great for a first draft, then the Body Forumvirate could read it, vote on what they thought was crap (pck me pick me!), and we could start polishing from there.

From a "get off your a$$ and write" perspective, I think a day is ideal.  Of course, I do most of my writing sitting, so technically it would be "get on your a$$ and write." but I think you knew where I was going with that.

I agree. The parameters are arbitrary, but so what.

Maybe later we can have a 10 minute BE haiku contest.

If you wanted to get serious about it, you could structure it so that the winner of the contest would be selected to develop their storyline into a big story, upon the satisfactory completion of which money would be awarded to said writer. I'd like to participate in something like this. I'm surprised the BESC hasn't done this already.

And speaking of the BESC, where is the link to info about the upcoming contest? The free side main page has a "link" that leads nowhere fast.

Here's the money quote from that page:

EDIT: Just saw the date of the posting. My bad.

Sounds like a great idea! I know I'd love ot join the contest. To make it fair, we'd probaly have to have a hidden "theme" or something like that, so people coudln't get a head start, or just have the honor system But if you get this going, I think it'd be awesome to throw my stories in the ring Put me on the list of writers who want to be involved
