The Yankees embarassed themselves again today, losing to Boston 11-6. They had the lead three times in the game. Derek Jeter made two errors - both in the 7th inning, where the Sox took control of the game for good. More bad news - Doug Mientkiewicz went down hard in a collision with Mike Lowell and had to be carted off the field, and Roger Clemens' return will be delayed: he's got some groin problems.

It's getting to the point where even Yankee Haters have to start feeling a little sorry for them. They just can't seem to get a break this year.

Yankee fans should probably swallow their pride and root for the Mets (who won 7-1 today...).

No kidding. Jim Hendry and the Steinbrenner are proving quite well that the biggest payrolls don't always equal the best teams.

Not the best day in baseball for my wishes, but I can still take solace in that my Phils are headed in the right direction, the Skankees have no shot at winning their division and nearly none at making the wild card, and the Flubs will eat it despite spending crazy bucks in the offseason because they still put too many hopes on Kerry "Ow!" Wood and Mark "Ouch!" Prior.

I think Jason Marquis and Rich Hill will make Chicago fans forget about Wood and Prior to an extent. Their real concerns are a paper bullpen and an inconsistent Carlos Zambrano. They may yet regret spending $40 million on Ted Lilly, who is starting to show echoes of his former self when he pitched with Toronto last year.

Even though the Yankees have been getting it together of late, they're still stuck. If Boston slips and goes .500 for the rest of the year, the Yankees will need to win roughly two out of three to climb back to the top. And with their bloated payroll, they aren't going to be able to trade away their dead wood for help. No other team can pick up their contracts!

The NL West seems to be where it's at. Three teams (LA, SD, AZ) all have good shots at winning it.

I still want to see a Brewers-Indians World Series, so Bud Selig can freeze his ass off in the last week of October.

Well, Clemens may have felt like he was in Houston again last night because he pitched a pretty good game but lost.

Phils lost, too, damnit.

But overall, it's definitely a season. I do think the wild card will come from the NL West -- how's that for a change -- but the Phils have it within them to muck the Fets. Given the shift in overall balance of power as it appears now, they will need to. Will they? Only time will tell.

But tonight I feel for 5'9" Jimmy Rollins, Phils' shortstop. He hits two homers and a triple, and they lose. Talk about not being able to do any more to help your team. Damn.

I can't believe the Tigers lost two of three to the Brewers. Yech. Their bullpen is just terrible right now. Dave Dombrowski must be working the phones like crazy. Still, The Gambler will be back soon. That should give everyone a boost, if Verlander's no-no didn't. Gawd, I love that man. Jered Who? Francisco Who? Tim Line-Who? Of the current crop of young pitchers, there's only one with a chance at the kind of career Verlander will have, and that's Cole Hamels.
