Go Redlegs!

We're below .500 yes (shocker), and our pitching is crappy, as usual, but we've got a new kid named Edinson Volquez who is off to a 4-0 record as a starter.   Not bad.  Not bad at all.

But our so-called "stars" Griffey and Adam Dunn are hitting .245 and .210, respectively.

Oh well.... at least Marge is gone.

Yeah, Junior is nothing if not consistent. When he was in Seattle as soon as he started hitting.001 better than the other players, he would start whining about wanting to be traded to a "good" team. These guys just don't get team sports.

Don't look now but the Rays will be carrying a winning record into May for the first time in the team's 10-year history.

Anyone got a mirror?  I think they printed the AL standings upside-down.

Today's win in Baltimore puts the Rays four games over .500 for only the third time ever.
Next, they travel to Boston for a weekend series for first-place in the AL East with the Red Sox (who they swept for the first time in St. Pete last weekend.)

Phils win 6-5 in 10 on a 1 on, 2 out homer by Pat Burrell.  17-13, leading the NL East.  Considering this was our first winning April since 2003, and our reigning MVP has been on the DL since the 20th of April and our main slugger is maybe just starting to come out of his funk, I'll definitely take it.

Bullpen has been outstanding, Burrell and Utley (also homered in this game -- ML leading 12) have been unreal.

Pedro and Smoltz going down helps us a ton too.

Phils beat the DBacks 11-4, are 19-14, leading the NL East....Mets lost.

Chase Utley continues his MVP work.  I called this before the season started.  I'll take anyone at 5-1 odds, placing $100, that Utley wins MVP over anyone else.  But only if we can call and secure the bets by 5-15.

Since my last post, the BoSox' Tim Wakefield and Mike Timlin did something that hadn't been done since 1900.  2 pitchers over 40 combined on a shutout.  Even if it's only one win, any time anyone does anything that is unique since 1900 is just amazing, IMO.

So today, Phils win....Jimmy Rollins returns to the lineup for the first time in a month and goes 3-5 with a homer, double, and 3 RBIs.  Mets rained out, Braves lose.  Skankees lose.  Not so bad in the world of baseball.

Today Phils had off, Mets and Braves got smacked, Marlins also lost....So a day plus dessert for the Phils.  Anyone else offering any other commentary on baseball would be nice here.  I can't be the only fan on this board.

Marlins with the best record. The Rays kicking ass. Too bad they can't get the people of Florida to care.

The Yankees and Mets meet up this weekend - Battle of the Mediocre!

And how 'bout those Cubs? Is it too early to think "playoffs"?

The Mariners have taken their rightful place at the bottom of the AL West. Wake me if they get out of the basement. I expect a long, long nap.

Just goes to show that the owners don't necessarily need to spend money by the boatload to put a winning product on the field (the Cubs notwithstanding).

I'm sure a lot of Cubs fans are starting to get visions of a World Series berth in their heads already.  Lord knows it's been a while since they last got off to such a good start. Certainly they're looking pretty good but there are still a lot of games left to play and anything can happen during the season.  Sure would be nice to see them rip off a nice winning streak and put some space between them and the Cardinals.

What a nice bit of irony for Toronto fans.  Their marquee player, Vernon Wells, hits the DL for 4 - 6 weeks with a wrist injury and all of a sudden the team starts producing runs again.  Still won't be enough to climb out of the hole they've dug themselves into, though.  In my opinion, the Jays have the best starting rotation in either league right now and don't have much to show for it because they can't get hits with runners in scoring position.  Maybe they should take a page out of the Cubs' playbook and take a few more pitches.

Tampa and Phoenix.....The DBacks have the best record in the majors and they were racking up attendance figures around 16K during their longest homestand of the year.  That's just sad.  Guess it's about building history.  Even if you have a long history of pain, if you have that history, you'll have fans show up.

So today, the Skankees and Mucking Fets were rained out -- hope the water downstream from that was well-filtered.

Phils beat the evil Blue Jays 10-3....Jayson Werth had a great series and good week in a single game, hitting 3 homers and driving in 8 runs.  Pretty sure if someone on your team is doing that, yer gonna win.  The benefactor (though he pitched pretty well) was 900 year old Jamie Moyer, improving to 3-3.  Braves won but Marlins lost, so it's a good day, IMO.

Doesn't it always seem to be the case that players do well against their former teams?  First it was ex-Blue Jay Jayson Werth tallying 3 homers and 8 ribbies for the Phils on Friday, and then Rod Barajas delivers some huge home runs of his own for Toronto on Saturday to earn A.J. Burnett a very fortunate win.

Cubs also rallied to beat the Pirates 4 - 3 today, thanks to a strong finish by the bullpen.  Kerry Wood converted his 6th consecutive save (10th of the season) and looking like he's gaining command of his pitches again.  The most interesting stat is the Cubs finishing their current homestand with an 8 - 2 record, the first time they've done that in 30 years.
