I just watched the last few innings of tonight's LA-St.Louis game.I think it lasted almost 5 hours. It finished at at almost 1:30am est.
The Dodgers had a guy on third in extras with 1 out.The St.Louis outfielder caught a fly ball and then threw the Dodger out at home by a country mile.
St.Louis won it in the 13th inning.

Any guesses for the World Series? We'll just go for the opposite of whatever you say.

Personally, I find myself rooting *against* St. Louis. Let's face it; the Cardinals are boring. There's no 'hook' to the team. The Red Sox have the whole 'beard' thing going on. And we've seen to much of St Louis these past few years, as they have been crushing the dreams of their opponents.

This year, the Pirates had made their first trip to the playoffs in over 20 years. The Cardinals sent them home in the last game of their series. The Dodgers were looking to win their first pennant in 25 years... the Cardinals ended that dream.

Last year, the Washington Nationals made it to the playoffs for the first time in the 35 year history of the franchise. They faced the Cardinals - and went to the final game before losing.

In 2011, the Cardinals won the wild card spot on the last day of the season. In the first round, they faced the Phillies - who had set a team record for most wins in a season. The Cardinals won in 6 games. Next up, the Milwaukee Brewers, who had also set a record for wins in a season, and were looking for their first pennant in 29 years. The Cardinals won in six games. In the World Series, they faced the Texas Rangers who had won the first pennant in the team's history. The Cardinals broke their heart - twice - before beating them in the seventh game.

Going back even more: In 2006, the stars aligned for the Mets. They had made it to the LCS - only to lose a heartbreaker to the Cardinals in the seventh game. In 2004, the Houston Astros were trying for their first pennant ever. The Cardinals beat them in seven games.

Go Red Sox!!!

I concur, I don't like the Cards either.  But I have a feeling they will win it in 6.

I have, of course, have been watching the WS, and I must say I've seen things that I never thought I'd see in a World Series. These are supposed to be the best teams in baseball - this year, that happens to be true. The best team in the AL is facing the best team in the NL.

Usually, when you've got two evenly matched great teams, you say that it's a shame that one of them has to lose. With how crappy they've both been (playing and managing) so far, it's a shame that one of them has to win...

I respectfully disagree. This series has brought to the front some of the most obscure and convoluted rules of baseball.  ::) ??? ::)

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox!

And to World Series MVP David Ortiz, who was so awesome that in Game 6 they deliberately walked him THREE TIMES rather than risk a possible run-scoring base hit. When they let him hit, he went 11 for 16....

The ballot for the 2014 Hall of Fame class is out.

Deadspin claims they purchased a ballot from one of the BBWAA members and are going to let a fan polling decide who the votes are for. Some are saying it makes a mockery of the voting process; others say the process is already a mockery. I say - Big Deal. It's one of some 600 ballots. One ballot isn't going to have a noticeable effect.

Others are commenting on the weakness of some of the names on the ballot. Moises Alou? Ray Durham? The thing is, you're not voting for who gets on the ballot. There are hard and fast rules about how long you played in the major leagues, and how long it's been since you retired. If you aren't worthy of being elected, you will not get enough votes to stay on the ballot, and will not get into the Hall.

Others are confused about the whole process. You can't choose more than ten players on any given ballot. But this ignores the fact that you can stay on a ballot for up to fifteen years. Surely, that's enough time to get voted in. And tangotiger notes that (with the exception of Gil Hodges), every single player who has received at least fifty percent of the votes at some point has eventually made it into the Hall. Joe Posnanski suggests that because of that, why not just make the voting a smaller percentage instead of the current 75%? "Make it 60%. There are many, many advantages to doing this, but the main point is that it would not CHANGE who goes into the Hall of Fame. The players would just get in there quicker and without all the unnecessary squabbling and minority filibustering."

Personally, I don't think there's anything at all wrong with the current system. You have to wait five years after retirement before appearing on the ballot, which allows a proper assessment of your career. And if you're not an obvious case, you've got as many as fifteen tries to get the required amount of votes. The sheer number of votes allows for the general consensus to rule - so the occasional "protest" vote, accidental blank ballot, or sale of voting rights isn't going to affect the outcome. The plaques in Cooperstown aren't organized by how many tries it took you to get in, or by how many votes you got.

Anyway, here's the list. You can vote for as many as ten players. Asterisks denote players on the ballot for the first time.

Moises Alou *
Jeff Bagwell
Armando Benitez *
Craig Biggio
Barry Bonds
Sean Casey *
Roger Clemens
Ray Durham *
Eric Gagne *
Tom Glavine *
Luis Gonzalez *
Jacque Jones *
Todd Jones *
Jeff Kent *
Paul Lo Duca *
Greg Maddux *
Edgar Martinez
Don Mattingly
Fred McGriff
Mark McGwire
Jack Morris
Mike Mussina *
Hideo Nomo *
Rafael Palmeiro
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Kenny Rogers *
Curt Schilling
Richie Sexson *
Lee Smith
J.T. Snow *

The last time they played in the World Series half the member states of the United Nations did not exist. For that matter, the U.N. did not exist.
