Yes, Cole Hamels, and you'll get him from Philly the day you make the perfect cheesesteak in Detroit.     We know he's golden...he may make a bad game here and there...no problem.

That's okay, one team's not big enough for Verlander and Hamels.  Besides, we have Bonderman, Miller, and young Fred Porcello.  We'll make do.

When anyone talks trash about intraleague I point to games like this.    My father watched the Phils at Baker Bowl and fortunately avoided when the stands collapsed in on themselves -- otherwise, was the Tigers first modern trip to Philly.  We'll own them later if they dare play us in the postseason, but that's a given.

How about those Padres? They don't get the respect they deserve thanks to playing on the West Coast, well after the bedtimes of The People Who Matter (the ones on the East).

Heck, the whole NL West is the place to be right now. Three teams with more than 39 wins...

Go Padres.  They are a perfect example of success with  pitching and defense.  ADrain Gonzalez,. Trevor Hoffman, Jake Peavy, and Chris Young all deserve to be allstars.

About time they might win when their division is worthy of winning.      That being said, liking the Phils' passing the Braves tonight, now 2 out for first.  It's a long, long season ahead, and I like what the Phils have to offer.

Go Devil Rays. They are the first team in 35 years to be swept in a four-game series while striking-out their opponent (Chicago White Sox) 10 times or more in each game.

And why I firmly believe every team should be represented in the All-Star Game, no matter where they are in the standings.

If it's an exhibition game put on for the fans, as it was when that rule was created, I totally agree.  But now that postseason home field -- something very real -- hinges on the outcome, I think the league having one or even more players from weak teams that get "Joe Bumfuck, hitting .275 with a .790 ops at his position" as their lone player nomination because that's the best they can manage are at a decided disadvantage.  Sure, anything can happen on any day, but if you're fighting for postseason home field advantage, you really should be able to put your best guys out there.  And right now, that's not possible.

Perusing the statistics, I am hard pressed to find a basement dwelling team that's so bad that they do not have at least one player among the league leaders in some strong category. And we're not asking them to start the game. Managers can even juggle their lineups properly to ensure that weaker players never even get to bat. Even "Joe Bumfuck, hitting .275 with a .790 ops at his position" can pinch hit for a pitcher, right?

By the way, I do not like and have never liked the "winning league gets home field advantage in the WS" thing. Like that's supposed to make them play harder?

I kinda like the idea of the all-star game meaning something again. Back in the day players played more than a single at bat or inning.

You think they'd want to play for the honor of playing in the ALL-STAR game. Or maybe because they owed it to the fans who wanted to see them. None of this candy-assed take your one at-bat, then get the hell out of there so you can enjoy your day off.

Once upon a time, they did.  But that's not the modern sport.  Now they only chase after the dollars their agents promise them in future contracts or signing bonuses.  I regret that too, but to regret it doesn't mean to ignore today's reality.

Also, to say no team doesn't have someone "among the leaders" in a stat is different than saying every single team has someone who is worthy of being an all-star by his entire production.  Yet, we need to pick at least someone from each team.  So each season we get a few relative scrubs while some great players miss out.  This one is no different and to say otherwise is to...invite many followup posts responding to your data backing up your position.
